Homemade Deodorant with Organic Ingredients

Since 2012, I’ve been creating digital wellness guides and researching natural beauty products, HIIT workouts, functional exercises, body positivity, self love, and tips helping you explore wellness and feel good.

Welcome to this post: Homemade Deodorant with Organic Ingredients.

I’ve been hearing so much lately about essential oils but I’m a novice when it comes to using them.

Homemade Deodorant with Organic Ingredients

My mom shared with me that a friend of hers started making her own, natural, homemade deodorant–something I have considered in the past.

She was using essential oils and coconut oil (the single most useful item in my beauty cabinet/pantry) as two of the ingredients in her recipe.

I wanted to finally make my own!

There’s probably no cute way to say it: When I run, I sweat. A lot. It seems like I sweat more than most. Especially outside in the heat, there is no avoiding it. I welcome the sweat and wear it as a badge and proof of my hard work. However, I have no desire to get super stinky and offend others with my stench.

I have been using organic and natural deodorant for a while now (a few years), but It’s neat to know that I can also make my own at home.

As I have aforementioned in past posts, I am 0% a fan of recipes. Maybe even more like -10% a fan of recipes. I just don’t like them. Planning, for me, takes away the fun. I want to wing it. So I wung it. (Wung?) 🙂

If you like to wing it, too, then read this, store it in your mind, but then set it aside when you make your first batch. You might enjoy it more that way.

The deodorant I’ve created contains 4 ingredients:

1. Essential oil

-I used grapefruit here. You can choose any scent you like. For men’s deodorant, try a sandalwood/patchouli combination.

2. Coconut Oil

3. Baking Soda

4. Arrowroot Powder

Instructions:

-In one bowl, stir together the baking soda and arrowroot powder.

-In a separate bowl, combine the coconut oil (might have to melt it first depending on your room temperature) and desired essential oil(s).

-Mix the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir (and adjust wet/dry comob if needed to achieve desired consistency)

-Store in a jar or recycled deodorant stick in your beauty cabinet.

I had a good feeling about this brand after meeting the founders and then another good-feeling-wave after reading the first ingredient list. It fully resonates and aligns with what I look for in skincare.

  1. Grapefruit oil is UV sensitive, so make sure to only use it on your under arms or other areas that won’t be exposed to sunlight. Let me know how is works?

    • Haha! I can completely relate! So I have an update for you– I ran about 9 miles today in 87 degree weather and this deodorant completely masked the odor under my arms–no joke. I did not expect it to–but holy cow–did the trick!! 🙂

  4. I would love to know how it feels or how you’ll apply it. I bought a vegan one on etsy and I have to rub it on with my fingers and it’s all crumbly. Smells like heaven and works just hate the application.

    • I get what you’re saying. So here’s what I’ve experienced so far….I tried it for the first time today before a run. I, too, applied it with my fingers but its not crumbly…it seems like if you have the right volume of essential oil/coconut oil/baking soda that it will be just creamy enough to go on nicely (no crumbling) but have enough baking soda to absorb the stickiness. I think I got the right mixture! 🙂

  6. Where do you get your oils??

    • Hey Jackie! Just realized I meant to respond to you on IG but didn’t. I got the Doterra oils as a sample from a Doterra consultant. The grapefruit essential oil is from a local company here in Indiana called Huckleberry Hutch. I recently bought a few more at a local health food store, also! 🙂 hope you can find some you like.
