Benefits of Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant form of protein in the body. It’s essential to build your ligaments, tendons, and even your skin. Realizing how prevalent it is in the body, it makes sense how it can offer so many benefits to you. Some benefits of collagen include sleep support, skin elasticity, joint health, athletic performance improvement, and accelerated healing from injury.

Furthermore, the word collagen actually comes from Greek roots that means “glue-producing.” And, it comprises 30% of your body’s total protein content, and is extremely crucial when it comes specifically to soft-tissue repair. It’s important to know that collagen is simply a type of protein; it is one of over 10,000 proteins in your body.

Collagen is a long-chain amino acid and is the most abundant form of protein in the body. It is responsible for creating and maintaing skin elasticity, hair strength, and connective tissue. In addition, collagen protein makes up 30% of the total protein in our body, and 70% of the protein that makes up your skin.

While collagen has many roles/maintains many structures in the body, it’s most prominent to your skin. Because as we age, the epidermis (outermost layer of your skin) loses elasticity and thins thru a degredations process known as elastosis. As elastosis happens, your skin tends to show more signs of aging. Also, you may notice that you acquire more wrinkles.

What is the most effective collagen to take?

In H2O, collagen breaks into gelatin. This means that collagen and gelatin are made of the same amino acids, simply with a different chemical structure. It can be helpful to think of them as the same tool, but with differing packaging. Both collagen and gelatin are an absolute must for the efficient repair of connective tissues, skin, fascia, ligaments, and tendons.

So, you may wonder: why use collagen instead of just taking protein powder or eating meat? Well first, many other vegetable and animal-based protein powders can be inflammatory for many people. Everyone is different and it’s crucial to experiment. I personally use a food-first philosophy and use any supplementation as just that, a supplement to my foundational lifestyle.

For instance, casein and whey are known allergens, egg protein can be quite inflammatory and many people are sensitive to pea, rice, and hemp, too. If you fall into the category of someone who gets gassy, bloated, or experiences brain fog from a scoop or two of protein powder, you might fall into this category.

Secondly, collagen protein (normally derived from a beef source) is made in the same way that bone broth is made – via low and slow heating to preserve the beneficial nutrients and vital amino acids. This way, you get a very dense source of amino acids, with relatively few calories, with also an amount of “bulk” for satiety. Amino acids supplements can also be helpful, but collagen can be especially useful for adding protein into smoothies, dishes, etc.

Collagen in Food

Some of the most common sources of collagen in food reside in animal foods. These include gelatinous meats such as shanks, necks, feet, cheeks, oxtails, ribs, bones and cartilage, skin, and bone broth. Supplementation with powdered gelatin or powdered collagen are techincally supplements, but an important distinction is that they are derived from real, whole foods. They are not synthetic supplements, like many on the market.

Collagen Processing Matters

However, something worth noting in regards to quality is that some of the big brands on the market have actually been bought out by big corporations and they have changed their ingredients/processing. For instance, one of the big ones uses fillers in their products now so that the actual product doesn’t have to contain the same amount of actual pure collagen in a container of their product; thus, giving them more profit. That’s lame and I recommend these brands below because they do not process in that way.

You want to ideally look for collagen that is more like a fine powder than a granulated sugar consistency. When collagen comes looking like granulated sugar, it means that fillers, additives, and bulk agent have been added during processing.

Are Collagen Peptides Good for You?

In an absolute SEA of protein powders, it’s tough to decipher which products are gimmicky and which ones are actually quality. Sometimes, you have to see through the marketing and get to know the people and mission behind these brands.

As always with my blog posts, I’ve done the work for you. Here are 5 of my top collagen powders that I personally use and enjoy recommending as clean options.

Collagen as Natural Cellulite Management

As we age, one of the things that diminishes is the elasticity of our skin. It just so happen that this is largely impacted by dietary collagen intake. You can consume some collagen through including animal products in your nutrition, but supplementing can be helpful if you have an application like elasticity loss or cellulite in mind.

There is more to the picture in terms of cellulite, which I get into in this blog post, How to Master Cellulite Naturally.

Do Collagen Supplements Work?

Isn’t All Collagen Created Equally? Nope! Here’s the deal. With the rise in the popularity of collagen comes the rise of the number of brands trying to get a piece of the pie. And, to cut costs, many collagen brands process differently and actually add binders/fillers to their collagen powder, making it bulkier. In other words, you get less ACTUAL collagen in the product. Also, many of them don’t have to list these extra processing ingredients on their label. Wild, right?

This is why I’ve comprised this list for you. It’s a good foundation of brands to start with if you’re looking to add a collagen supplement to your regime. Depending on your specific needs, you may find that one jumps out at you. I like to always offer multiple options, as ALL of us are different, with different needs and preferences. My aim is always to show you clean options to pick from.

Collagen Boost

Why take collagen? The benefits of collagen are well-documented online, and you’ve likely heard about them. Since collagen is the most abundant form of protein in the body, supplementing with a good-quality collagen can help a multitude of health aims. Collagen can help improve gut health, immune function, and the integrity of your hair, skin, nails. It also may help improve the function of your liver and detoxification pathways through the amino acid glycine.

Now that you know the aerial view in regards to collagen, here are my recommendations.
