8 Natural Shampoos to Amp Hair Growth
Recently, I’ve been on a mission to experience more non-toxic, clean hair care products. This interest has inspired me to write this post: 12 Natural Shampoos to Amp Hair Growth. Several of these brands I was able to try this year as a 2021 Clean Beauty Awards Judge (woop woop! What a treat.) In this post, I go through each one and share my thoughts on the formulas overall. At the end, I’ll mention my favorites. In addition, I’ll give you some honorable mentions to look into!
Keep in mind, I did a double shampoo with each of these. A double shampoo simply means doing two separate shampooing mini-sessions. In other words, I shampoo once with a small amount, rinse, and then repeat. Furthermore, I don’t necessarily use more product overall when I do this. It’s more of a small/medium amount twice versus a large amount once.
Pros Cons
The positives of changing to a nontoxic shampoo option are plentiful: longer hair, thicker hair, and a healthier scalp. In regards to cons–perhaps a concern for consumers switching over to natural shampoo is the perceived price increase. I get it!
But, here’s something real to think about. Many humans (men and women, alike) end up investing in hair growth supplements, treatments, or even procedures to get their hairline back. When you consider that many people go down that route and end up spending potentially thousands of dollars, it doesn’t seem crazy at all to be simply opting for a cleaner bottle of shampoo now. It’s a pay now or pay later sort of thing.
Also, some of these brands are reasonable cost-wise. Too, you’re getting what you pay for when you buy a super cheap shampoo. Just flip over the bottle and take a look at the ingredient list. On that cheap bottle you’ve been using, there’s likely a laundry list of ingredients that are not only synthetic, but you have no shot as pronouncing them or imagining wherer they came from, and even worse – they are contributing to the hair loss or thinning you are experiencing.
Shampoo for Thinning Hair
I’ve found that for me, doing it in two separate layers works well. The first shampoo is the formula making contact with the grease, sebum & build up on the scalp and help break it down. Then, the second shampoo session allows the restorative ingredients in the shampoo formula to make closer contact with the hair & scalp.

In addition, I wait several days in between washes. Too, it’s important to consider that the sebum your scalp naturally produces actually elicits hair growth. This may explain why some individuals have the best head of hair, but they don’t maintain it. Washing less has definitely yielded me more hair growth.

Thoughts:
Living Libations is one of those few brands from which I would willingly & excitedly try anything they create. Moreover, I’m already a fan and avid user of their skincare products, especially their Best Skin Ever – Sea Buckthorn Product. My skin loves it. Thus, I figured my scalp would benefit from their shampoo formula. I was right on the money with that assumption.
It’s both no-frills and ALL the frills. Pure, potent perfection. The ingredients are decadent and nutritive, yet it’s simple to use. In other words, it’s easy to get a good clean, and fuss-free wash with this shampoo. I like a double shampoo with this one (twice with a small amount instead of once with a large amount). Furthermore, it suds up just enough; even more so during the second shampoo, once you’ve cut through the first layer of grease.
One thing I would change:

Thoughts:
This formula is one of my new favorites and one I reach for often. With its aloe base, it gentle cleanses without stripping. Stripping shampoos can be an issue for many reasons, but one of them is that your scalp will try to overproduce oil to compensate, meaning you will feel the need to wash your hair more often.

Thoughts:
Morrocco Method shampoo are a total change up. I think of them more as scalp/hair food than a true shampoo. I would describe them as pretty close to the no-poo method, except, they do really clean your hair. Like you may have noticed in the description above, they do not foam at all unless you do a double-shampoo method (I do this). In that case, you do get a little bit of a lather during the second shampoo. I personally like to use these shampoos with their boar bristle brush in the shower to really ramp up the cleaning power and effectiveness.
I add these formulas into my rotation and they truly help keep my scalp happy and my hair growing healthily.

It’s the ideal shampoo in so many ways. It’s a great option for those that are used to a sudsy shampoo, but want to get rid of the harsh ingredients that normally elicit that foam. You know when you don’t have to try to like a new shampoo? You just like it right away and it just syncs up really effortlessly with your hair? That’s Evolvh. This product delivers the shine through how nicely it cleans. It’s a gentle but effective clean, helps lift my roots and leaves my mane purified without being in desperate need for conditioner. I usually will use a bit of their UltraShine Conditioner to detangle my ends before stepping out of the shower. Smells like apricot + passionflower, to me. Mmmm.
One thing I would change:

Annmarie Gianni Sweet Sunrise Shampoo

A multitude of wildcrafted herbs come together to form this non-drying hair-cleansing potion. Moreover, aloe vera, sweet almond oil, raspberry seed oil, and buriti fruit oil offer dense restoration. While this product is elevated through plant power like rosemary, horsetail, and nettle.
Thoughts:
This brand and I go way back to the beginning of blogging in 2012. Annmarie Gianni is the cream of the crop. Luxurious, organic, wildcrafted skincare products for all skin types. Thus, when they released haircare in 2020 for the first time, I was stoked to try and had high expectations.
And the drumroll reveals…I’m not surprised that I liked this shampoo right away. Too, I didn’t have to get used to it. The clean it provides is non-stripping, yet it lifts the funk. thus, it provides lift, but also doesn’t dry your hair out at all. Similar to many other shampoos in this post, I prefer a double shampoo with this formula.
One thing I would change:
Would love a bigger bottle! In the meantime, they do offer a subscription to keep you stocked.

Since this is such a pivot from traditional shampoo formulas, it would have been understandable for me to have low expectations for Everist. But, I somehow had a good feeling about this product. Thankfully, they fully delivered on that feeling. This toothpaste tube of shampoo is rad for so many reasons: a little goes a long way, it nourishes and cleans at the same time, and is easy to travel with. It’s truly a unique product. Moreover, the formula being as good at the concept is pretty cool.
If I could change anything:
I’d love a forest-y or vanilla-y scented shampoo concentrate.

3 Shampoos that Didn’t Work for Me:
Masami Mekabu Shampoo
Thoughts:
Although I really loved the scent of this formula, I found that it left a gunky, grippy feeling on my hair. This is likely due to the fact that this blend contains several oils that are meant to be hydrating for hair. Since my hair runs oily, I simply think this formula would be more suitable for someone with a dry scalp and/or dry hair.
The texture of the formula was nice & thick, so if this did work for you, this bottle would likely last you longer than you think.

Up Front Cosmetics Shampoo Bar
Thoughts:
The most obvious reason this bar didn’t stand out for me is that I don’t have blonde hair. However, I would totally recommend this bar to blondes that have been on the search for a “purple shampoo,” which can help mitigate any brassy tones in your hair color.
I found the lemongrass scent to be pretty intense, and lemongrass isn’t my favorite scent in general. If you’re like me, you may enjoy their other bars more. A few of the others have scents like tucuma orange & rosemary mint.

Aromatica Quinoa Protein Shampoo
About:
This shampoo was one I figured I would love most after a glance at the label. But, the protein in this formula felt like it was too heavy for my hair. My hair tends to be oily and needing a boost at the root level. However, it’s a good product, just not for my hair type. I see Aromatica’s Quinoa Recharge being a good pick for someone with damaged hair that’s really focusing on rebuilding a healthy head of hair.
