Purple Prairie Botanicals Review

About:

“Our Story:
Once upon a time there was a mother of three who was tired of her dry, irritated skin and acne problems.  She wondered what happened to the skin she was born with. One day while reading her organic gardening magazine, she found an article about old fashioned soap. She knew this was the answer she had been searching for. Soon after her first batch of soap, her skin was reborn! The instinctual desire to create took over and Purple Prairie was founded in 2000.  We are a Minnesota home grown company started with the belief that our skin needs products made with nature’s ingredients to stay healthy & beautiful. Our products contain the finest nurturing, safe & organic ingredients combined with herbal infusions & pure essential oils which restore the balance of both physical and mental well being. We cater to all skin types including the most sensitive skin. All products are 100% natural unless noted otherwise, environmentally safe, petroleum free & paraben free. We are proud to qualify for the National Green Pages directory.

Our Green Philosophy:

All Purple Prairie Botanicals products are inspired and made with a back-to-basics approach. Our products are made in small batches using nature’s ingredients. Many of our products meet and exceed organic standards. All products must meet the following requirements:

NO Petroleum
NO Parabens
NO Synthetic Dyes
NO Artificial Preservatives
No Animal Ingredients
NO Detergents
NO Sulfates
NO GMOs

Purple Prairie Botanicals has always believed in the protection and sustainability of our natural world and the delicate systems which balance all life as we know it. This planet produces all of the products we share with you, and it is simply a matter of appreciation and respect that must be given. When purchasing our raw materials, we only work with American companies that lead the industry in environmental stewardship and adhere to strict principles and protocols that ensure fair treatment and compensation for the people involved with the production of our ingredients. This includes organic farming and fair trade practices.

Zero Waste:
Purple Prairie Botanicals is a “Zero Waste” company where any materials which might be regarded as waste are either recycled, re-used, composted, reclaimed, or brought back into the production cycle. All invoices, brochures and other paper materials printed for our customers by Purple Prairie Botanicals is a minimum 35% post consumer waste material. We use minimal/recyclable packaging and recycle/reuse everything possible during the production process. We re-use all shipping material(boxes/packing peanuts, etc.) that arrive with our ingredient purchases. All of the office supplies we use are repurposed, reused or recycled. The packaging material we use to cushion your order is 100% repurposed/reused bubble wrap, peanuts and newsprint salvaged and cleaned from other companies and individuals.

Reusing is better than recycling!!

No Animal Testing:
We are in compliance with the PETA statement of assurance. We do not test on animals and do not purchase materials from any company who tests on animals.”

One of the many things this brand description shows is that a company, even without “organic” or “organics” in their name might perhaps use organic ingredients, and visa versa. Checking out their mission and ingredient lists will help give you a better understanding about it.

Great job, Purple Prairie! 🙂

Purple Prairie Botanicals patchouli vanilla lotion

Patchouli Vanilla Lotion

Purple Prairie Botanicals’ Description:

“Rejuvenate the free spirit- This rich, warming aroma taps into your sensual side of life. Its regeneration properties benefit many skin conditions. The hydrating properties of organic olive oil & shea butter will leave your skin nourished, soft and glowing.

WARNING: Might evoke sensual freedom.

99% Natural Ingredients: aqua(water),organic cold pressed olea europaea(olive)fruit oil, hamamelis virginiana(witch hazel),kosher vegetable glycerin, organic helianthus annuus(sunflower) oil, organic cocos nucifera (coconut), cetearyl alcohol, organic butyrospermum parki (shea butter)fruit, pogostemen(Patchouli)oil, vanilla oil, rosmarinus officinalis(rosemary) leaf extract, salix nigra (black willow)extract.”

My Description & Thoughts:

My first thought when receiving this product: My husband, Paul. I remember when I first met Paul we were discussing soap scents as we were contemplating starting a soap business down the road at some point. He told me how much he liked Patchouli in a soap. I agreed with him–it’s rich earthiness is pleasant and masculine smelling.

This lotion has the earthiness of Patchouli and the decadence of Vanilla–it’s an intoxicating combination. My new daughter and I like to give Paul foot rubs some times after he comes home from work–and that is how I first used this lotion. He appeared to enjoy the scent and feel of the lotion. I could tell in rubbing it in that it is rich and comprised of dense, nourishing ingredients.

A lot of lotions can contain a large amount of water and junk, leaving your skin needing more moisture just minutes later. This one does a great job of keeping skin hydrated. Many organic ingredients make up this lotion, which I love. It’s a lotion I’d recommend to Patchouli lovers and those looking for an earthy scented body moisturizer.

Purple Prairie Botanicals natural deodorant

Natural Deodorant

Purple Prairie Botanicals’ Description:

“Our deodorant is a safe alternative to the mainstream aluminum laden versions. This is not an antiperspirant but an effective odor neutralizing solid. Lavender, tea tree and palmarosa oil are proven odor eliminators.

  • 100% natural
  • Non-irritating
  • Aluminum Free
  • Paraben Free

Why choose Purple Prairie deodorant over an antiperspirant?

Antiperspirants and deodorants are not the same thing. Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, and blocking the pores with powerful astringents such as aluminum salts so that they can’t release sweat. (Note that aluminum can accumulate in the brain.) Sweating is a natural cooling and detoxifying process. Sweating is healthy! Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria.

Directions: Use daily to stay fresh and odor free.

100% Natural Ingredients: Apis mellifera (beeswax), organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, organic cold pressed olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa butter), cymbopogan martini (palmarosa oil), pimpinella anisum (anise) oil, lavendula angustifolia (lavender) oil, cupressus sempervirens (cypress oil), melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, zinc oxide and cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) oil.”

My Description & Thoughts:

Man, I was super bummer that this deodorant smells like licorice! I am not a fan of licorice–the smell nor the taste. It must be the anise oil in this deodorant that exudes the licorice smell.

However, my personal preference in smell is no reason to not recommend this deodorant. If you happen to like licorice, I believe you will really take to this deodorant. If you compared this ingredient lists to a stick of deodorant from a big box grocery store, you’d buy this one in a heartbeat. All of these ingredients are familiar and plant based–and a lot of them are organic. What a refreshing thing to see another deodorant (I’ve only come across a handful of good ones that are also effective) that is aluminum free, paraben free and comprised of all natural ingredients.

Despite my distaste for anise, I tried out this deodorant and tested it out on a run outdoors. Funny enough, I knew this deodorant was working well because I continued to smell licorice throughout my run! 🙂 Again, I realize that A LOT of people love this scent. I would recommend this deodorant to THOSE people. It performed well for me, and I perspire profusely when I run in the heat, so that says something.

96% Natural Ingredients: aqua (water), hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel), polysorbate 20, eucalyptus citriadora (lemon eucalyptus), azadirachta indica (neem) seed oil, nepeta cataria (catnip) oil, cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) oil, eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) leaf oil, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oil, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil and salix nigra (black willow) extract.”

My Description & Thoughts:

I loved getting a sample of this product. My family does a lot of outdoor walking and hiking in addition to my daily runs. This bug spray has been much needed at times. An outing is just that much more enjoyable when you don’t have bugs buzzing around your face, biting you, etc. The bottle I received fit perfectly and conveniently into a pocket of my Camelbak. The larger bottle looks just as portable and would certainly fit easily into any pocket or pouch that would normally carry a water bottle.

I found this spray to be very effective! I didn’t have one worry about bugs biting me when I had it applied. I’m sure this is because Purple Prairie uses several potent essential oils, many of which are natural bug repellers. They get the job done and also leave a nice herbaceous, earthy scent on your skin and clothes. It doesn’t smell of chemicals at all, like many bug sprays do.

In addition to this awesome bug spray, Purple Prairie Botanicals makes several products specifically geared towards gardening (My Mom is a Master Gardener and I see these gardening lotions, salves and sprays to be perfect for her).

I think everyone needs some of this bug spray around. It’s a great for a family to have on hand to spray themselves, the kids and the pets before going outdoors. It will allow you to be worry-free about bugs and bug bites.
