How to Reduce Skin Redness on Your Face

Skincare seems to be a topic that comes up over and over for me, even though my focus with content is often more about nutrition, fitness and positivity–and I get it!

Keeping my facial complexion looking healthy, clear and vibrant has been a focus of mine since I first got my monthly cycle (age 12). For years I struggled with cystic acne (you can read all about that experience and what helped me here). But in the last 5 years, I have been acne-free (HECK YEAH MAN) and that’s been a liberating feeling.

What’s left on my skin present-day is some acne-scarring and occasional cheek redness that fluctuates with my time of the month, my diet, my sleep quality, my alcohol intake and overall stress levels. It took me a long time to learn that health in general (your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body) is TRULY affected by every aspect of your human experience.

Emotional State’s Impact on Skin

This includes your emotions, beliefs, thoughts, stress, unhealed trauma, skincare ingredients, diet quality, etc. Might seem totally quacky that your beliefs about yourself can manifest themselves elsewhere in your body. You don’t have to take my word for it. There’s heaps of science and anecdotal info to reinforce this, just check out the Heal Documentary.

You can’t neglect any aspect of that and expect to be perfectly healthy. Also–perfectionism won’t necessarily serve you either. The key is to GAIN MORE AWARENESS surrounding your thoughts, choices and habits.

Okay, okay, so back to skin redness. Most people are probably looking for a quick fix. Been there! Though healing your skin doesn’t happen overnight, there are some things you can do now that will immediately start helping you.

Your Skin is Largely Your Diet

Multiple things to point out here:

-When your body is not effectively eliminating (kidneys, liver, etc.), it does so through your skin

-If your diet is crappy and full of processed, inflammatory foods, your skin is going to reflect that

-Drinking a lot of water goes a long way! (I use this Berkey Filter for all my drinking water)

-Cutting out (or minimizing) common inflammatory foods can help a whole bunch. Gluten, dairy, soy, corn, egg (for some people) and highly processed oils would all fall into this category.

Makeup Wearers, Clean it Up!

Redness is an indicator that inflammation is happening, which is your body’s response to damage or imbalance. Wearing toxic makeup is like putting gasoline on that fire. The sooner you can swap out your current drug-store foundations, concealers, etc., the sooner your skin will have a chance to get on the healing train.

My personal favorites are made by a company called Mineral Fusion. Not only are they accessible (you can buy them online and in your local Whole Foods, Sprouts, or other health food store, but they are EWG Verified (Environment Working Group), an organization that reveals information on the toxicity of many makeup/skincare/food brands. They even have an app. It’s a great resource for looking up different products you currently use or are considering purchasing.

The two most important ones (since they go directly onto your skin) that I would swap to are their Pressed Powder Foundation and their Concealer Powder if you’re looking for more natural coverage.

There have been a few times when traveling that I chose to use other makeup because I didn’t have my trusty clean options on hand. I noticed that my skin was more red, irritated, slightly itchy and just unhappy when I took my makeup off each night). Those instances were a good reminder that the quality of your makeup does matter.

Keep Your Facial Hygiene Pure

Just like makeup, most generic skincare cleansers, toners and moisturizers are rife with chemicals, preservatives and skin irritants. Luckily, there are a lot of cool brands out there that have created clean, organic, nourishing  skin care products that are sure to help you reduce your facial redness.

A few of my staple favorites are Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Bar Soap and Now Foods Jojoba Oil.

Doesn’t Non-Toxic Makeup & Skincare Cost More?

Here’s the thing, if you’ve ever shopped for makeup or perfume at a department store like Macy’s, Dillard’s, Saks, etc., you’ve probably noticed that it’s SO expensive. The biggest kicker is that the ingredients in those products are absolute dog crap. Seriously. You can’t even pronounce them. They’re not clean, they’re toxic and they don’t improve the true health of your skin. It’s actually amazing to me that places like that still sell. *steps off soap box*

That said, non-toxic skincare when compared to those options is actually significantly cheaper AND it actually helps your skin look more youthful and dewy, without any chemically-laden crud.

If you are used to buying makeup at a drug store and pay less than $10 for foundation, this may be a step-up money wise for you. But it’s one thing to wear makeup everyday just to cover things up. It’s another to invest in a product that will be helping improve your skin and not just mask the redness. That’s the difference I see between the two.

Also, I don’t spend money on heels, handbags, jewelry, etc. My “girly money” goes towards clean skincare and cosmetics. That’s where my priority lies. If you have had nagging skin issues your whole life, you can probably relate that this is a no-brainer.

The Eczema Company: Manuka Honey Eczema Cream Review

The Eczema Company: Manuka Honey Eczema Cream by Yoro Naturals

About:

creamy balm thick in texture and rich in emollients, the Manuka Honey Skin Cream is our top seller because it moisturizes even the dryest of skin. Organic New Zealand Manuka honey is combined with organic tree nut-free oils and beeswax to create this gentle, nourishing Manuka honey eczema product that will not burn or sting the skin. Our “Manuka cream” is a surprisingly soft and creamy oil based balm, rather than a true water based eczema cream that’s excellent for soothing and calming irritated skin.

What is Manuka honey and Manuka Oil?

Manuka honey is native to New Zealand and is created when bees pollinate the Manuka bush, a relative of the tea tree. Manuka oil is extracted from the leaves of the Manuka bush. Manuka oil is actually 10 times more potent than tea tree oil. Manuka and tea tree oil are ancient remedies used worldwide for a variety of ailments. Unlike the very medicinal odor of tea tree oil, Manuka oil and honey have a lovely delicately sweet scent. What else makes Manuka honey so incredible? It contains 1,000 times more methylglyoxal than other forms of honey. Methylglyoxal is what gives honey it’s anti-bacterial properties and which makes honey so beneficial.

The level of methylglyoxal in manuka honey is 1,000 times greater than most regular honeys

  • Great for soothing dry skin.
  • Active 16+ Manuka honey from New Zealand – 3rd party lab certified.
  • Hand Crafted.
  • GMO free.
  • NOT gamma radiation treated.
  • Made in Canada.

My Experience:

My facial complexion was been a focus of my self-care since I was a teenager. I battled cystic acne for many years. While that’s a thing of my past and I rarely get breakouts, I do have an uneven complexion due to sunspots and redness (likely related to what I’m eating).

Of course, what I put on my skin also effects how it looks. I use exclusively clean skincare (almost always 100% organic, with the exception of the makeup I wear). Even though my skincare routine is clean and my diet is mostly healthy + nourishing, I’m human and imperfect. There are days I don’t drink enough water, splurge on food here and there and/or drink several rum + club sodas.

While I do my best to not attach any guilt nor shame to those things, I do realize that my skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside my body. I’m always open to experiment with skincare to help reduce my facial puffiness, redness and uneven skin tone.

I was excited to collab again (you can read my thoughts on some of their other products here) with the Eczema Company to try this product and compile my experience in a blog post.

I’ve always been aware and a fan of Manuka honey and the myriad benefits if can provide for many aspects of overall wellness. It’s been a long time since I’ve used it on my skin, and I don’t believe I’ve ever used a Manuka honey based skincare product of this quality. I like that it contains Olive oil (I like to rotate my facial oils and most of them contain a nut-based oil).

I’ve been applying this Manuka Honey Eczema cream to my face (with a focus on my red cheek area) at night on a fresh face after cleansing) for about a week now. I don’t think that the redness on my face is eczema, but I do think it can be helped by a cream that targets inflammation.

So far, I can definitely tell a difference in my skin redness. Very encouraging!

Diet + boozing impacts my skin quite a bit, so i never expect a face product to be a cure all. but when it makes a noticeable difference, it’s so rad. HONEY FTW 🍯

Primally Pure Skincare: Dry Shampoo + Facial Oils Review

This post is a review of Primally Pure skincare products.

I discovered Primally Pure on instagram while scrolling through some of my favorite green skincare account. I had seen their name many times before actually looking into their product; initially I was skeptical only because there are so many skincare brands out there now claiming to be “clean”, but aren’t.

However, after checking out their ingredient lists, I was seriously wowed. Organic ingredients, thoughtfully selected oils and just super nourishing skincare products. To try them out, they were generous enough to send me their Fancy Face Serum, Dry Shampoo for dark hair, Complexion Mist and Cleansing Oil.

Primally Pure Skincare

I’m just crazy about these product thus far and how they make my face feel. Here’s how I’ve been using them:

Fancy Face Serum

About:

Fancy Face Serum contains a vitamin and antioxidant rich blend of the most potent + healing oils our planet has to offer. Great for all skin types, Fancy Face Serum helps to diminish fine lines, scarring, age spots, discolorations and more.

How I’m Using It:

I apply a few drops of this to a freshly cleansed face at the end of the day along with the cleansing oil (I use the cleansing oil as a moisturizer). Currently, I only wash my face once a day–so nighttime is all about nourishing my skin after I take off the day’s makeup. This serum has a beautiful, dark brown color and literally feels like it’s a cure all for my facial redness, uneven tones and blemishes.

Dry Shampoo for Dark Hair

About:

For days when you’re in a hurry or when washing/drying your hair feels like too big of a task, our dry shampoo will be your new best friend. Our dry shampoo for dark hair contains more organic cocoa powder for seamless blending with all shades of brunette.

How I’m Using It:

Shampooing my hair only happens about once a week; for me, this has proved to be the magic period of time for me to preserve some of my hair’s natural oils and texture without stripping it away. For the days in between that my scalp starts to look suspect (grungy and oily), this dry shampoo is magic. I just sprinkle some on the oil slicks and rub it in to my scalp with my finger tips. If you’ve never used dry shampoo powder before, you’ll be surprised at how refreshed it makes your scalp/hair look.

Also worth noting–most generic dry shampoos at the store are packed full of toxic junk and ingredients that are harsh on your skin. They can sometimes cause hair loss and scalp issues. This makes it super important to pick a clean brand!

Neroli Complexion Mist

About:

Neroli Complexion Mist boosts moisture + plumpness, balances oil levels and combats acne with powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Our hydrating + toning complexion mists are suitable for all skin types, and we recommend rotating each of them into your skincare regime.

How I’m Using It:

Since I only wash my face at night, this is the one product I really enjoy in the morning for a skin pick-me-up. My favorite way to use it is to lightly mist my face with it after I do my make-up. It really helps your makeup blend into your skin. It helps your skin look like skin!

Cleansing Oil (Normal Skin)

About:

Based on the scientific principle that like dissolves like, the oil cleansing method utilizes beneficial oils that penetrate deep into pores to dissolve grime and build-up. This age-old method of cleansing effectively purifies + nourishes the skin while keeping its natural moisture barrier in-tact.

How I’m Using It:

YEP, I’m totes aware that this blend is meant to cleanse the skin when used alongside a washcloth. But, I love how pure and nourishing the ingredients are in this one and they have been working flawlessly to moisturize my skin at night after I take my makeup off.

I sometimes use a few drops in the shower (paired with a baking soda + bentonite clay mixture) on days when I’m wearing quite a bit of makeup. The oils really helps dissolve all the impurities and also packs some extra get-off-my-face power for eye makeup like stubborn mascara.

Pixie Cup: Period + Menstrual Cup Review

PERIOD BLEEDING!🌺

This is quick run down of my period history and experience with the Pixie Cup; a menstrual + period cup.

i don’t want to sugarcoat or filter myself on this topic because i think as women, untethered convos on this topic can be super helpful.

for most months of my life, menstrual cramps have clotheslined me and had me contemplating why women are cursed (or blessed) with something so absofreakinglutely dreadful.

Finding ways to make my time of the month less awful has been a focus of mine since age 12. when i first started having periods, i don’t think menstrual cups were around or at least not so mainstream. i always had to buy a bunch of super absorbency tampons to deal with how much i bled.

thank goodness i can now rely on the Pixie Cup to help. a. girl. out.

Wearing the cup is more comfortable than tampons, is way cheaper and is better for my body + environment (wayyyy less waste). <if you’re still reading this, you’re probably not a dude, so i’ll keep giving deets>

It took me a few months to get the hang of putting the cup in so that there was so leakage and it was “sealed”. But i don’t have issues now and there’s no looking back to the days of buying tampons/pads every month.

I can’t recommend this cup enough, and AM SO HERE so all the questions you have. please comment with questions or DM if that’s more comfortable for you.

This small company has really changed my period for the better. I can’t wait to hear that more women are using this 🌺#gamechanger
