All of the makeup I am wearing here is 100 Percent Pure! Love the natural look their products provide.

100 Percent Pure Makeup Review: Complexion

Mattifying Primer

About:

Silicone-free primer infused with skin-plumping seaweed collagen for flawless, long lasting cosmetic application. Fills fine lines while minimizing shine.

My Thoughts:

As an oily human/a big time sweater, I’m always looking for ways to mitigate the oil slick that often forms on my face after a day of workouts, dog parking, powering thru the workday. This Primer is the ideal layer underneath the foundation.

It really does do a good job of taking away the shine while also adding nutrients to the skin thru the nourishing ingredients in this Mattifying Primer. Also, my makeup stays in place for longer when I apply this. About 1.5 pumps of product covers my whole face.

Fruit Pigmented Healthy Foundation – Sand & Golden Peach

About:

Full coverage fruit pigmented® liquid foundation with soothing aloe, antioxidant-rich superfruit oils, oil-absorbing rice powder, and a flawless matte finish.

My Thoughts:

This is the ideal formulation for my skin. Especially with oily skin, I prefer a foundation that doesn’t add a ton of extra dewyness to the skin. The Fruit Pigmented Healthy Foundation has just enough of a natural illuminating look without making you look too shiny.

Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer – Cocoa Glow

About:

Warm your complexion using vitamin-rich fruit and cocoa pigments, laced with luminescent gems and minerals for subtle shimmer and a sun-kissed glow.

My Thoughts:

I’m so glad I discovered this bronzer! This Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer in the shade Cocoa Glow looks very dark in comparison to my skin, but the trick is that you don’t need to apply much. Bronzer doubles as a sort of contouring shade for me as well, as I apply it from under the cheekbones to my ears for a more “chiseled” look on the face.

Not needing a ton of product to achieve a bronzed look makes this product last a long time. Another added perk is that this bronzer is what I use as an eye shadow on most days. Using it on your lids helps bring all of the hues on your face together for a more cohesive look.

100 Percent Pure Makeup Review: Lips

Fruit Pigmented Lip Gloss – Mauvely

About:

Ultra shiny lip gloss made with restorative vitamin E and real fruit pigments. Softens and moisturizes lips while delivering silky smooth, semi-sheer coverage.

My Thoughts:

By itself, this shade is lighter than I typically go for, but I use it on top of the Matte Lipstick and it’s the perfect subtle pop of pink. It provides a good moisture layer on top of the lipstick, as well.

100 Percent Pure makes a few shades darker than this one (pictured in the very top photo, above), so you could also opt for those if you wanted to wear this gloss by itself and get the desired color.

As far as performance and feel goes, the formula is just awesome. It’s the ideal lip gloss. Adds the right amount of color and shine, and of course–the ingredients are the cleanest.

100 percent pure matte lipstick mojave

Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Butter Matte Lipstick – Mojave

About:

Matte lipsticks formulated with vibrant, long-lasting color from real fruit, and a nourishing blend of cocoa and shea butters to moisturize and soften lips.

My Thoughts:

A more matte lip is what I typically like on my own face, with just a hint of a shine. This is why I do the matte lipstick + lip gloss combo.

As far as this lipstick goes, I’m obsessed with this color. Mojave looks a bit orangey in the website photos, but it doesn’t look like that on. It elevates the natural color of the lip while still maintaining a natural look. I’m so glad I picked this color. Hooked.

100 Percent Pure Makeup Review: Eyes

100 percent pure ultra lengthening mascara

Fruit Pigmented Ultra Lengthening Mascara – Black Tea

About:

Lengthens and separates lashes without clumping, smudging, or flaking. Coats each lash with conditioners and natural pigment from black tea, berries, and cocoa.

My Thoughts:

The Fruit Pigmented Ultra-Lengthening Mascara does what it claims, it lengthens while also nourishing the eyelashes. I like the brush alot, too. The bristles are relatively short, which I find is helpful for separating the eyelash hairs at the root).

I apply two coats of this and it’s perfect! It’s a natural but full lash look. The only time it has ever flaked off is after an extra intense sweaty workout during the summer (actual droplets of sweat flying off the face). During normal circumstances like going out to dinner or social outings, this mascara always stays in place.

A helpful tip I discovered to make natural mascaras hold up during summer workouts is to get an empty mascara tube (I got mine on amazon for cheap, see above photo) and fill it with a non-toxic hairspray. If you apply a coat to your lashes after applying your mascara, it just helps add another barrier so that sweat doesn’t penetrate. The color in mine looks brownish just from the product mixing into the hairspray over time.

For anyone new to clean beauty–I don’t think it’s a bad thing that a mascara could come off during extreme circumstances. I say this because that means it doesn’t contain the harsh ingredients + chemicals that generic formulas do to keep the mascara in place. I don’t want that toxic stuff near by eyes. So, doing things this way is no problem for me. Hopefully that makes sense 🙂

100 percent pure pretty naked palette

Pretty Naked Palette

About:

Fruit pigmented® makeup palette celebrates neutral tones and soft shimmer to enhance and beautify your complexion. Includes eyeshadows, blush, and highlighter.

My Thoughts:

Never thought I would be a palette girl because I didn’t think I needed all of that product to achieve my desired makeup look. However,  this palette is perfect for me.

This is one of many palettes that 100 Percent Pure makes, and I feel happy I started with this one because it’s very versatile. You can achieve a very natural look with it, or ramp it up with a bit more product. The Pretty Naked Palette includes a highlighter, blush and 3 different eye shadow shades.

I don’t use the eyeshadows as often as the blush and highlighter, but I like the shades for when I want to wear them. I actually mix all 3 together by dipping my brush into one after the next, then applying. It works for me!

100 Percent Pure Makeup Review: Skincare

Multi-Vitamin PM Serum

About:

Potent, stabilized vitamins in this PM serum work synergistically to reduce lines and wrinkles, increase firmness and elasticity, brighten and even skin tone.

My Thoughts:

After about 3 months of using this daily, I have noticed that a lot of the hyperpigmentation on my face has gone away. My complexion overall looks more even. Before purchasing this product, I did some research on Vitamin C for skin and reduction of hyperpigmenation is one of the listed benefits. Happy with this serum!

Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream

About:

De-puffs, boosts circulation, and brightens dark circles with caffeine from coffee and green tea. Anti-aging vitamins and rosehip promote a youthful eye area.

My Thoughts:

I only tried a sample size of this one but it was enough for me to be interested in buying the full size. It smells incredible (and not from artificial fragrance), and it left my skin feeling so soft and boosted.

I will say that I’m not a huge proponent of eye creams, as I think using your moisturizer/serums on your under eye area works great. I ended up using this on my whole face and loved the feel. I’d be interested in using it consistently to “wake up” the skin in the mornings.

100 Percent Pure Makeup Review: Hair Care

Kelp + Mint Volumizing Shampoo

About:

Hydrating and invigorating shampoo gently purifies while adding bounce, body, and luster. Kelp thickens and strengthens while seaweed collagen adds shine.

Kelp + Mint Volumizing Conditioner

About:

Invigorating conditioner refreshes the scalp with peppermint while hydrating, smoothing, and strengthening strands with sea kelp for enhanced shine and volume.

Burdock + Neem Healthy Scalp Shampoo

About:

Purifying formula unclogs pores, stimulates circulation, and alleviates dryness, itching, and flaking. With added hydration for healthier scalp and hair.

Burdock + Neem Healthy Scalp Conditioner

About:

Purifies to unclog pores and stimulate circulation in the scalp. Intense hydration helps to alleviate dryness, itching and flaking for healthy, nourished hair.

Thoughts on the Haircare products I tried:

I only had sample sizes of each hair product, but I absolutely loved all of them. Both of the shampoos I found to be clarifying without stripping the scalp, and the conditioners provided lots of slip + detangling power.

They felt so easy to use and the formulas smelt amazing. I look forward to using the full-sized versions of these haircare products.

tusol wellness smoothies

Tusol Wellness Review + Coupon Code

About Tusol Wellness Co Founders, Ilana + Ingrid:

Ilana met Ingrid earlier that year in Malibu, where Ingrid was creating powerful customized smoothies for private clientele. Each elixir had specific properties: some boosted serotonin (the happiness neurotransmitter), while others provided the body with every amino acid it needs (to support cognition and organ function).

tusol wellness smootihies

Ingrid had healed her own postpartum depression and Crohn’s Disease through a clean lifestyle that revolved around these smoothies and was on a mission to similarly optimize the lives of others. Ilana wanted to leave the high-end restaurant industry, which prioritizes the fine dining experience over other factors and focus instead on food as a means to longevity, wellness, and happiness.

Literally, TUSOL means “Your Sun” in Spanish—the sun within you, the energy that fuels you. Tusol Wellness Review + Coupon Code: My Experience

I discovered Tusol Wellness through following Ingrid for a while on Instagram. I went down a bit of a rabbit whole discovering other inspiring people in the wellness community (like Joshua Holland). Amidst discovering them, I found myself absorbing so much positive, informative, helpful, inspiring, applicable information. All of this newfound into has been fueling my vigor for overall wellness. Shortly after, I discovered Ilana’s page and was just inspired by how both of them walk the walk.

The Tusol Commitment to Quality

It doesn’t take long after hopping onto the Tusol Wellness Website to notice the quality of the superfoods&antioxidants in Tusol’s Smoothie blends. For me, ingredients are paramount. I know that they are the key to detoxing and staying vital in regards to hormone function, energy levels, etc.

How I Use Tusol Smoothie Packets

I don’t necessarily have a favorite blend of the 5, because they are serve different purposes. Different time of the day, different vibes, different blend. For example, I really like the Balance (Matcha + Ashwagandha) blend in the morning for a boost. Then other times, when I’m looking to restore, recenter, recover, I look to a blend like Calm (Turmeric + Ginger).

The Tusol Feeling

Perhaps the coolest part of using Tusol’s superfood blends is that I can noticeably feel a difference in my mood, energy levels, athletic performance and sleep. I also can tell that the overall quality of how my days feels good. There are no side effects for me or anything less than awesome health perks.

Also, an active practicer of Crossfit + yoga, I love the plant based protein in these blends that can help me recover. This good, clean fuel really is a secret weapon for recovery in so many ways.

I’m not chasing weight loss, so I can’t speak to that goal. But, I do know that the more nutrient dense superfoods in your diet, the more proficient your body will be at detoxifying. Since heavy metals and toxins store themselves in fat tissue, this is helpful to understand if you are wanting to lose some excess adipose tissue (fat).detox

The Taste

Tusol does a great job of formulating their ingredients in a way that the superfood flavor (some of them are more intense than others; after all these are no-joke, deeply nourishing foods) does not overpower the whole experience.

You can definitely taste the superfoods in each one (for example, the turmeric in the Calm blend, the wheatgrass in the Balance blend), but especially when prepared as a smoothie (as they are intended), they are really, really good. On top of that, you feel great about all the goodness that you’re ingesting.

A Few Words on Detoxing

I will say that if your current diet isn’t healthy (full with fruits, veggies and whole foods), you may have more detoxing to do than you expect. I have quite a bit of experience with detox, as I was an organic + cold pressed juice shop manager for a few years. You may feel the need to go to the bathroom more, etc. BUT, it’s important to note that this is a healthy process and it is your body eliminating what it needs to. You are giving your body the tools to cleanse and purify with superfoods and now it is doing so. Just something to keep in mind!

Tusol Wellness Recipes

Tusol provides several suggested pairings/recipes for putting these smoothies together in your blender/food processor at home. They don’t disappoint; they know what they are talking about with the flavor combinations!

How to Reduce Skin Redness on Your Face

How to Reduce Skin Redness on Your Face

Skincare seems to be a topic that comes up over and over for me, even though my focus with content is often more about nutrition, fitness and positivity–and I get it!

Keeping my facial complexion looking healthy, clear and vibrant has been a focus of mine since I first got my monthly cycle (age 12). For years I struggled with cystic acne (you can read all about that experience and what helped me here). But in the last 5 years, I have been acne-free (HECK YEAH MAN) and that’s been a liberating feeling.

What’s left on my skin present-day is some acne-scarring and occasional cheek redness that fluctuates with my time of the month, my diet, my sleep quality, my alcohol intake and overall stress levels. It took me a long time to learn that health in general (your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body) is TRULY affected by every aspect of your human experience.

How to Reduce Skin Redness on Your Face

Emotional State’s Impact on Skin

This includes your emotions, beliefs, thoughts, stress, unhealed trauma, skincare ingredients, diet quality, etc. Might seem totally quacky that your beliefs about yourself can manifest themselves elsewhere in your body. You don’t have to take my word for it. There’s heaps of science and anecdotal info to reinforce this, just check out the Heal Documentary.

You can’t neglect any aspect of that and expect to be perfectly healthy. Also–perfectionism won’t necessarily serve you either. The key is to GAIN MORE AWARENESS surrounding your thoughts, choices and habits.

Okay, okay, so back to skin redness. Most people are probably looking for a quick fix. Been there! Though healing your skin doesn’t happen overnight, there are some things you can do now that will immediately start helping you.

Your Skin is Largely Your Diet

Multiple things to point out here:

-When your body is not effectively eliminating (kidneys, liver, etc.), it does so through your skin

-If your diet is crappy and full of processed, inflammatory foods, your skin is going to reflect that

-Drinking a lot of water goes a long way! (I use this Berkey Filter for all my drinking water)

-Cutting out (or minimizing) common inflammatory foods can help a whole bunch. Gluten, dairy, soy, corn, egg (for some people) and highly processed oils would all fall into this category.

Makeup Wearers, Clean it Up!

Redness is an indicator that inflammation is happening, which is your body’s response to damage or imbalance. Wearing toxic makeup is like putting gasoline on that fire. The sooner you can swap out your current drug-store foundations, concealers, etc., the sooner your skin will have a chance to get on the healing train.

My personal favorites are made by a company called Mineral Fusion. Not only are they accessible (you can buy them online and in your local Whole Foods, Sprouts, or other health food store, but they are EWG Verified (Environment Working Group), an organization that reveals information on the toxicity of many makeup/skincare/food brands. They even have an app. It’s a great resource for looking up different products you currently use or are considering purchasing.

The two most important ones (since they go directly onto your skin) that I would swap to are their Pressed Powder Foundation and their Concealer Powder if you’re looking for more natural coverage.

There have been a few times when traveling that I chose to use other makeup because I didn’t have my trusty clean options on hand. I noticed that my skin was more red, irritated, slightly itchy and just unhappy when I took my makeup off each night). Those instances were a good reminder that the quality of your makeup does matter.

Keep Your Facial Hygiene Pure

Just like makeup, most generic skincare cleansers, toners and moisturizers are rife with chemicals, preservatives and skin irritants. Luckily, there are a lot of cool brands out there that have created clean, organic, nourishing  skin care products that are sure to help you reduce your facial redness.

A few of my staple favorites are Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Bar Soap and Now Foods Jojoba Oil.

Doesn’t Non-Toxic Makeup & Skincare Cost More?

Here’s the thing, if you’ve ever shopped for makeup or perfume at a department store like Macy’s, Dillard’s, Saks, etc., you’ve probably noticed that it’s SO expensive. The biggest kicker is that the ingredients in those products are absolute dog crap. Seriously. You can’t even pronounce them. They’re not clean, they’re toxic and they don’t improve the true health of your skin. It’s actually amazing to me that places like that still sell. *steps off soap box*

That said, non-toxic skincare when compared to those options is actually significantly cheaper AND it actually helps your skin look more youthful and dewy, without any chemically-laden crud.

If you are used to buying makeup at a drug store and pay less than $10 for foundation, this may be a step-up money wise for you. But it’s one thing to wear makeup everyday just to cover things up. It’s another to invest in a product that will be helping improve your skin and not just mask the redness. That’s the difference I see between the two.

Also, I don’t spend money on heels, handbags, jewelry, etc. My “girly money” goes towards clean skincare and cosmetics. That’s where my priority lies. If you have had nagging skin issues your whole life, you can probably relate that this is a no-brainer.

Colorado Aromatics Skincare Review: April Edition

This is a review of the Colorado Aromatics lip conditioner and cleanser.

Colorado Aromatics

Overall Rating: 5-stars

About Colorado Aromatics:

“Dr. Cindy Jones formulated Colorado Aromatics Skin Care Line for the outdoor lifestyle. Being a lover of hiking, gardening and now farming, she saw changes occurring in her skin due to sun, wind, and the arid Colorado climate. As a biochemist and herbalist she had a good handle on the physiology of skin and what it needed as well as what herbs could contribute to the needs of the skin. As she studied various cosmetic ingredients for actives that were sustainable and safe for the environment she began formulating products that are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to help repair skin damaged from the environment.

“Inflammation and oxidation of the skin cells are two key processes that accelerate the aging process” says Cindy. Herbs provide multiple and complex antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties which help to combat signs of aging and skin damage caused by wind, sun and other environmental factors that we are exposed to on a daily basis, especially for those who love the outdoors. Many of the herbs found in the Colorado Aromatics skincare line are grown on the Certified Naturally Grown farm operated by her and her husband at 5,000 feet elevation not far from Long’s Peak which summits over 14,000 feet. Plants grown at high elevation have to work harder to survive, and ultimately, produce more active components.

Cindy extracts the herbs in a number of ways; distillation, infusions, tinctures and decoctions, to use in her cosmetics line. She believes that the natural beauty of the herbs and their surroundings shines through in the product and, ultimately, the end user. Cindy Jones also owns Sagescript Institute and is a highly sought after product formulator / research and development consultant in the natural cosmetics industry. She brings a scientific perspective to the field of herbalism and natural skincare and has created a niche for herself in formulating natural cosmetics. Dr. Jones is a biochemist and herb farmer with extensive experience in physiology, toxicology, microbiology, cancer research and cosmetic science.

Cindy has also worked as a research scientist, a college instructor and is a published author. Dr. Jones is a highly sought after product development consultant to the natural cosmetic and skin care industry. Her passion for science and her love of herbs is the catalyst behind Colorado Aromatics skin care line.

We farm in a beautiful place in Colorado with a view of Longs and Meeker Peaks. Our farm has recently become Certified Naturally Grown; a grass roots alternative to organic. You can read about it in my blog here; http://sagescript.blogspot.com/2012/01/we-are-certified.html. We grow a variety of herbs/vegetables including lavender, mint, cucumber, lemon balm, rose, raspberry leaf, and comfrey to distill for aromatic waters and to make various extracts that we use in our own Colorado Aromatics Cultivated Skin Care products as well as sell separately.”

About:

“Keep your lips looking plumper and more memorable with Allure lip balm. It has antioxidant rich herbs and ingredients to support collagen to plump the lips. The emollient oils including Cupuacu Butter will soften and protect skin while improving skin elasticity. Some brands use toxins and irritants to plump lips. We just want to keep them healthy and wholesome by using vitamin C ester and proline. Both are required for collagen synthesis to help them stay plump.

__________________________

My Thoughts:

I first discovered and tried Colorado Aromatics skin care products back in 2013, where I remember being initially so impressed by the farming behind these products. Cindy’s passion for creating pure skin & body care products in evident in her formulations, ingredients and expansive product range. I love and appreciate what she does and feel thrilled to help all of you get more well acquainted with a few new products.

A huge part of a healthy skin care routine is having a few things you do for your skin every day, regardless of how crazy your schedule is or what else you have going on. One of those things for me is applying some kind of organic lip balm or conditioner right before bed. Doing this right before bed allows it to thoroughly soak into my lips without transferring over to the drinks I’m consuming throughout the day. This lip conditioner has been really enjoyable to use–it’s free of the fillers and crud, very moisturizing, herbaceous and relaxing to the senses and boasts a clean ingredient list, top to bottom. It naturally keeps your lips soft and plump via organic ingredients (so cool!).

The way in which I have changed my facial routine over the last few years has been pretty drastic. Essentially, I leave my skin alone more and try to retain more of my skin’s natural moisture than I ever have. I tend to only use pure oils to cleanse my skin and exfoliate once or twice a week as I feel my skin needs. When I do cleanse, I am oh-so-picky about the cleanser I’m using. This one makes the cut. It uses natural astringents, cleansers and nourishing ingredients to help clarify skin without causing irritation. It’s a good formula and I like keeping it in my shower for the days when my skin needs a refresher!
