Tailwind Nutrition Endurance Fuel + Rebuild Protein Review

This post is a review + my experience with Tailwind Nutrition’s Rebuild Recovery Blend & Endurance Fuel.

unnamed.jpg

Tailwind Nutrition is a pretty seriously dope brand based out of Durango, CO. Their focus is on glycogen + electrolyte + energy replenishment for endurance athletes.

I have a full marathon and several halfs under my belt; and running is still a regular part of my training. However, most of my time is spent in a Crossfit gym.

The first Tailwind product I tried (Endurance Fuel-pictured in the orange bag) is awesome game day fuel. I also see it as a great source of readily-absorbed carbs for right when I wrap up a hard workout. Through my experience with grueling crossfit workouts. I’ve learned that my body + recovery respond really well to carb backloading. In other words, right after a workout my focus is carbs and water. Doing this right after a workout helps you bounce back and hormones in check (also prevents your cortisol levels from staying up).

That said, protein is super important for my sport as well. I’m not someone who advocates a ton of animal protein consumption, in fact I always take vegan protein with the exception of collagen and beef bone broth. I love that this Rebuild blend by Tailwind packs 10g of protein per serving, while also giving your body the carbs it needs to replenish your energy stores.

The ingredients are clean, and I like the choice to use rice protein, as it’s vegan and also is one of the most bioavailable proteins (easily absorbed and used by your body). This blend also features several amino acids that aid in recovery. You can tell they thought about this one!

Taste wise, I found both blends to be light and milky tasting, definitely pleasant. Though they have a carb content, they don’t taste super sweet. I would add some almond or hemp milk to it for optimum flavor + thickness + satiety. I’d say definitely drinkable with just water though.

My boyfriend, who is a Crossfit + Track & Field coach, was my second set of taste buds. He said he definitely enjoy it more when mixed with a plant based milk for a little more body and sweetness.

Tailwind is still in Beta with this product, and I’m just stoked that I have had the priviledge to try it first! It will be available SO SUPER SOON THOUGH (March 12th!) through their website.

Endurance athletes who are looking for a dose of protein are in for a treat. It’s the same great Tailwind quality just with more of recovery bang. I’d also recommend it to anyone doing high intensity training who is looking for a carb + protein duo to keep in their gym bag.

Run On Organic Now has a Media Kit (& Why!)

When I started Run On Organic back in 2012,

during my last semester of college, I took it upon myself to create, forge & develop relationships with brands in an effort to try more products, learn more and help promote brands that I believe are doing a good thing. Back then, a large percentage of my effort was just that: me reaching out to brands that interested me, acquiring complementary samples in exchange for my honest & candid thoughts.

Run On Organic has grown a bit since then. I now have a passionate, supportive group of people through my blog & across many of the social media platforms. I am so thankful for every single one of you that subscribes to my blog and reads my thoughts. I truly do my best work, as fast as I can (amongst juggling wearing the other hats I wear in life).

With ROO’s growth has come a change in the percentage of work that I pursue and the work that falls in my lap. Right now, about 80 percent of the products that I review have been a result of a company/brand pursuing me as a writer/blogger. I am so stoked on that fact. I feel like it’s been such a cool thing to watch this little idea evolve and develop over the last few years.

Until this point, I have not hosted a single advertisement on blog. Any logos or links on my site are affiliate links (I get a teensy commission if you make a purchase using that link). However, I do not get paid otherwise to promote those brands.

To keep up with the demand of running ROO (brands asking me to collaborate with them, advertising inquiries, new projects that pop up frequently) I have formed a media kit. This brief graphic provides what I believe is fair to ask as compensation for my time spent promoting a brand, hosting ads, etc.

Transparency is very important to me. I felt compelled to share this slight shift of gears on ROO and promise to disclose in each post that I get paid that that’s the case. Know that what I share here is done with a mind that aims to and is driven to educate, inspire and disclose the truth about food & skin care. Whether I have been given the product or have purchased it myself is irrelevant in that regard–though many may assume that paid reviews are always biased. That’s not who I am and anyone who knows me can can speak to that.

That said, I am excited for what has been with ROO, what is & what’s to come.

Thank you to everyone along the way for offering your help, advice, guidance, support and good vibes. They are very felt. I appreciate every single comment that I ever get from you guys. I am overflowing with gratitude for you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

My Thoughts:

These bars have awesome flavors, that are awesomely named, with an awesome company name, containing awesome ingredients. If you can’t tell, I think these bars are pretty awesome!

Bearded brothers offers unique, quirky, fun flavors and names–each one of them being heart & delicious in it own right. I marvel at these ingredient lists–one organic ingredient after the next. I love the use of maca in the chocolate bar. When I see maca as an ingredient in a health bar, I always have a good feeling that the brand is in-tune to the superfoods that can really amplify health and fuel the body. Maca is a great endocrine system aid, as it balances and restores hormone levels–which is beneficial to every facet of health, especially recovery.

Since these bars are high in sugar (the good kind–naturally occurring from fruits), I like to pair it with a whole-food based protein smoothie in the morning and a cup of bulletproof coffee (coffee + coconut oil). This way, my macros are balanced. By itself, this bar is a great post-workout or mid-workout (depending on the longevity of your activity) refuel snack. Each of these bars is power packed with energy and nutrients from healthy sources.

Taste-wise, these bars are dense, flavorful and just moist enough to be tasty. My only scrutiny (and this is just personal preference) is the use of dates. They just are not my favorite flavor. Without that taste, these flavor profiles are right on the money.

I’d recommend these bars to all endurance athletes, especially. They are also suitable for those with gluten, soy and/or nut allergies (the Radical Raspberry Lemon is their nut-free option). They’re a clean, organic source of energy and are conveniently packed so that you can throw them into your pant pocket, water pack, or back pack.

Camelbak Mantra Powder Drink Mix Review

______________________________________________

My Thoughts:

The Camelbak brand is invaluable to my family’s vigor for nature and being outdoors. We love all of our Camelbak backpacks as well as the water bottles–of course, I’m a big fan of the fact that they are all BPA-free. This large purple Eddy bottle is perfect for our little girl her fluid capacity gradually increases. It’s a bit bigger than the kid’s Eddy and is great for long days or trips away from our home water filter.

As far as electrolyte replacement and hydration goes, I’m very easily to please. Water does it for me. I drink only water before and after activity, with the occasional squeeze of fresh lemon juice or lemon essential oil into my water bottle. I don’t naturally gravitate towards sports drinks or mixes. If I try them, my standards are pretty high. I want the ingredient list to be chock full of recognizable, whole food ingredients.

In the case of Mantra, it’s tough for me to stand behind a product that does not use organic ingredients. I do believe it to be a large step in the right direction (and better than the big lines of sports drinks–not naming names) for these Camelbak Mantra powder mixes to be free of artificial ingredients, colors and sweeteners– & I like the choice to use stevia in these mixes. However, to make it into my daily routine, these ingredient lists would have to look much more appealing and recognizable.

I appreciate the idea of this product, but in actuality–the ingredients are not up to par for this running girl.

Q & A with UltraRunner Emz Eliason of RunEmz.com

So excited to share the wisdom and thoughts of a woman that I truly admire, look up to, and see as a running sister!

Here are my questions to Emz:

1. You run, a whole bunch. What gets you up in the morning with such tenacity?

I’d say for the most part it is my goals. Even if I don’t have a scheduled race in the near future, I know running for charities is my passion. I always want to know that if I received an opportunity to do a run….that I will be ready [training wise]. The early morning hours are MY time for ME. This may mean I get out of bed at 4:30 but it is always worth it.

2. How is each run different for you?

Although I do all my runs on a treadmill, I do try to make sure that I change it up. Some days I go a little faster, some days I take the incline higher. At least three days a week I try to do my runs without any music or TV. Other days I take it easy & just let the legs go.

3. If you could sum up your approach to running, what would it be?

Just. Freaking. Run.
Who cares about the speed. Get out there.

4. If you could only run in one pair of shoes for the rest of your life…what brand & model?

Love this question. Without a doubt Mizuno Wave Prophecy 3’s.

5. Dream place to run:

New Zealand. Every year we go back to visit family – it reminds me that I do like running outside every now & then. 😜

6. Dream running buddy:

My Instagram friends. Truth. Some of the coolest people ever. I have made some of my closest/dearest friends through social media. I have been fortunate enough to run alongside many of them during one of my 24-hour treadmill runs. As well as having some of them pace me during my trail 100’s. Incredible, inspiring, thoughtful, selfless individuals.

7. Favorite run of your life so far:

Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim run. It was a completely different experience than any ultra I have ever done. No crowds. No cheering. No crew. No run partners. Just me with myself, outside in one of God’s most incredible creations.

8. If you could give nutritional advice to other runners, what would it be?

That quote, “you can’t out train a bad diet”…… It’s the truth. It took me way too long to get this through my thick skull. Running 70-100 miles a week does not give you the right to eat superfluous amounts of crap. I found when I eat bad – I feel like bad. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy carrot cake & pizza with the best of them. And I do ENJOY my treats occasionally. But not daily.

9. Favorite food/meal:

Mexican food. All of it. [sans meat & dairy]. My go to after a long run….Cafe Rio vegetarian salad [tortilla, black beans, all veggies, guacamole, jalapeños, salsa] = my heaven.
My daily staple = vega one vanilla chai protein shake. Holy. Yum.

10. Favorite Athlete:

All the mom’s out there. I know you may call this generic…. But it’s the honest truth. I am so inspired by moms who get up and put in hard amounts of training every day – then rather seamlessly put on their mom, wife and employee hats. It’s incredible to me. I am far more inspired by “average women” than professional female athletes.

11. Your best marital & parenting advice:

Be honest. Express your needs. Communicate. Hang out together. Not a fan of girl’s night or girl’s weekend but I am a huge fan of date night with my man. I choose him every damn day over anything else.

Don’t make your child’s life easy. Teach them how to work hard. Be an example of this.

12. What impression would you hope to leave on those that look up to you?

That I’m not a talented runner. But I put in a lot of work. My parents taught me the value of working hard at a very young age. It has always stuck with me. If you want something. Put in the work. Get after it. Now.

13. Emz’s Life Motto, summed up:

You’ve. Freaking. Got. This.

Train your brain to tell your body you CAN do hard things.

I’ll be sure to keep this post on hand for days when I want an extra dosage of motivation. You ROCK, EMZ!!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me 🙂
