About Out of Africa:

How We Got Started:

Victor Lulla, a native New Yorker living in Los Angeles, has long nurtured interests in healthy lifestyles, the environment and social responsibility. After briefly considering an early retirement after the sale of his electronics firm in 2002, he instead created California Inside & Out, a manufacturing and distribution company that developed and marketed natural skin and body care products, based in Venice, CA.

Gilles Adamon, owner of Natura Sarl, headquartered in Benin, West Africa, attended the 2005 Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA hoping to find a distributor for his shea butter cosmetic products. As luck would have it, Victor was at the Expo looking for an interesting opportunity to help expand his product line.

The two men found that they shared not only an interest in natural products, but in social responsibility as well. A friendship ensued and Out of Africa was founded later that year as an exclusive joint venture.

The founders agreed that Lulla would purchase state of the art production equipment and raw materials, while Adamon’s team, in collaboration with a West African women’s cooperative, would supply locally-source pure unrefined shea butter. The company-owned factory in Benin now produces 200,000 bars of soap a month, along with an expanding array of other shea butter products. The products are shipped to California Inside & Out for distribution under the trademarked brand Out of Africa.

Shea Butter: Nature’s Miracle Moisturizer. Out of Africa’s shea butter products nourish the skin with 100% pure unrefined shea butter direct from Benin, West Africa. A natural moisturizer and emollient, shea butter contains antioxidant vitamins A, E and F and beneficial fatty acids that leave skin feeling restored and refreshed. The Out of Africa line includes organic shea butter bar soaps, hand and body washes, body butters, lip balms, lotions, body oils and pure unrefined shea butter tins. The natural scents used in our shea butter products are also available in the Out of Africa line of aroma fragrance reed diffusers.

Our “other” mission: Producing premium quality skincare products is only half of our story. Lulla and Adamon’s partnership supports several women’s cooperatives and helps to create jobs in democratic Benin, West Africa. Out of Africa shea butter skincare also sponsors a groundbreaking project in Benin called SCHOOL CHILDREN UNITE. A portion of all sales is being donated to this global leadership initiative.

Thank You! Your purchase helps to support education and local enterprise in Benin, West Africa. “A houana ka ka” *, thank you very much.”

My Thoughts:

When you’re somewhat of a skin care snob like I am (having been spoiled by mailing entirely-organic lines of skin care products), your standards are high. Overall as a brand, I think Out of Africa is doing great things in reference to helping children and families in Africa. I do appreciate that they are committed to not using parabens, phthalates, sulfates, SLS and artificial colors. Those are all positives. However, it still leave this product just slightly above average for me.

I still see a few questionable ingredients (polysorbate-60, phennoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol) that I don’t like seeing in the mix. Besides that, the ingredients that are clearly plant-derived aren’t organic.

This body butter does an okay job of moisturizing. When you compare this product to an entirely organic body butter, well–there’s no comparison. When your skin feels like it’s only quenched for a mere 10 minutes after application, this is usually indicative of a less than pure & less than awesome ingredient lists that contains some “fillers” and water.

Again, I appreciate the efforts to decrease the amount of harsh ingredients, but I simply don’t want to flip over my tube of body butter and see crummy ingredients. That doesn’t make me eager to apply it to my skin. I’d like to see Out of Africa commit to no junky ingredients and more organic ingredients. As it is, I wouldn’t recommend this body butter simply because I know of many other organic alternatives that easily trump it.

TastyFace Organics Skin Care Review: Part Deux

TastyFace Organics

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

I have been supremely lucky to have gained an organic beauty sister in Kelly, the founder of TastyFace. She’s a vibrant soul and a passionate woman–infectiously so. She also just so happens to make one of my very favorite lines of skin care (in my top 2!). Here are a couple other posts I’ve written on TastyFace products:

These are the products that were new for me to try: (I have previously reviewed the Coconut Cream Cleanser–you can read my thoughts here!)

Blood Orange Vanilla Body Butter

About:

“This is a a powerful butter.  Thick, rich, dense with moisture.  We combine organic shea, cocoa butter, coconut and sweet almond combine to create a powerfully moisturizing and nourishing all over body treat.  Finished with vanilla and blood orange essential oil to create a scent that’s quite simply a combo of creamiscle and chocolate.  Delicious. Your skin will soak it up!

(Please note:  Product consistency can vary depending on temperature.  Colder temps will lend to a hardened consistency – will soften at room temp.  Likewise, try to keep below 78 degrees to avoid melting!  *Just like butter.)

Ingredients:  Shea butter*, cocoa butter*, coconut oil*, sweet almond oil*, blood orange essential oil, jojoba oil*, vanilla extract*, essential oils*

*organic/high quality source

Directions for Use:  Slather on as you see fit – this is one that is completely up to personal preference.  It might seem oily/rich at first but it will absorb quickly, don’t fret.”

Tamanu + Grapefruit: Healing Serum

About:

“Our serums are wildly popular for a reason.  They pack a powerful punch!  Designed specifically to address redness, acne, eczema, and other skin issues. Lighter in texture than moisturizer, but filled with nothing but the highest quality organic oils and essentials.  The healing serum is specifically formulated with tamanu oil – which is known for its ability to quickly heal cuts, abrasions, acne, and help reduce the appearance of redness and scarring. This is a lovely light moisturizing serum and can also be layered with other TastyFace products. (We recommend cleanser, toner, serum, then moisturizer!)

Ingredients:  jojoba oil*, tamanu oil*, sunflower oil*, evening primrose oil*, sea buckthorn oil*, calendula essential oil*, grapefruit essential oil*, essential oils*

*organic, high quality source

*Please note:  citrus essentials oils can increase photosensitivity, so be cautious in the sunlight (and use sunscreen!).”

Sweet Orange Cream Lip Balm

About:

“Our newest!  HUGE tin of lip love right here. Sweet orange combined with warm, comforting vanilla scent our classic balm recipe… coconut oil, cocoa and shea butters, sweet almond oil and beeswax.  Simple yet so awesomely effective on stubborn chapped lips!  And it just plain tastes amazing.  Having a hard time not licking my lips off over here.  Remember, our lip balms are a giant 1 ounce.  That’s about 4 times the size of normal balms!

Ingredients: coconut oil*, cocoa butter*, shea butter*, sweet almond oil*, beeswax, vitamin e* (from sunflower seed oil), sweet orange essential oil*, vanilla oleoresin, essential oils*

*organic/high quality source

Directions for use:  Apply liberally to lips.  Can also be used as a healing salve for various cuts and scrapes, or a cuticle softener. Replace lid tightly after using.  Balm is temperature dependent.  In cold temps, warm by rubbing a very clean finger on product.  In warmer temps, throw in fridge to re-solidify.  Do not leave out in the hot sun and please take caution when opening product on a warm day to avoid spills!”

My Thoughts:

I truly began to laugh to myself in beginning to write another piece on Tastyface. Why am I laughing? Because this could be a 4 word review: “Tastyface Organics freaking rocks!”

Let me just say, I have tried many brands of organic skin care (most of them not actually containing entirely organic ingredients–which in my opinion is an abuse of the word “organic”) and it is rare to find product lines:

1. Made in small batches.

2. Headed by an engaged, warm founder that is eager to help.

3. Is comprised of 100% organic ingredients.

No bull honkey. No tomfoolery. No bogus promises. TastyFace is the REAL deal.

As the name suggests, these products are incredible aromatic, intoxicating and the ingredients are good enough to eat. Kelly truly abides by the idea of “if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it onto your skin.”

Now for the these new products I got to try! These two serums are like summer dreams in a bottle. Not only are the ingredients organic and pure (as always, with Tastyface) but they soak into my skin perfectly. If you’re new to facial serums, don’t be afraid! Even if you have oily skin, nature’s oils are and should be your friend. Damaged skin needs moisture; it shouldn’t be deprived of it. Investing in a bottle of Tastyface serum will do so much more good for your skin than ANY bottle of chemical-filled acne-fighting cream. Chemicals don’t solve imbalances, organic skin care & a healthy diet do.

If I had to pick one of the two serums, I’d say the Tamanu + Grapefruit is my favorite. When I was in college a few years ago, Tamanu oil was one of the very first natural remedies I began to use on my blemished skin. I noticed the health of skin improving almost immediately. It felt better, I was more evenly complected and my skin just stopped freaking the bleep out. Tamanu oil might sound foreign, but your skin will love it.

The sweet orange lip balm was a product that our 6 year old was eyeing. She said “Ohhh orange cream!” It gives me so much peace of mind knowing that we have an organic lip balm for her that she loves. So many sticks of lip balm are riddled with junk. No junk here, just pure, sweet orange goodness. I was lucky that she was willing to share it with me so I could try it 🙂 This balm, along with the lemon rosemary balm by Tastyface is a balm recipe perfected. It’s the ideal consistency–soaks into your lips just enough but keeps them moist. It seems like so many lip balms with a cheap base ingredient don’t hang around on your skin for long (same for cheap, junky lotion), you apply it and then your skin is dry again in 10 minutes. I don’t have that problem with these lip balms. They rock!

It’s a good thing that my husband doesn’t regularly use body butter, because blood orange is his favorite! Blood orange kombucha, blood orange sparkling drinks–blood orange everything. This body butter is such a treat. These scent combinations that Kelly has come up with are simply brilliant. Blood Orange + Vanilla is a sublime coupling. Like in using body oils, I like to use this body butter right after showering, when my skin is still a bit damp. The water droplets help the body butter spread onto skin more easily (it also allows you to use less–so it will last longer!). It gives skin the perfect quench and such a pleasant smell. It’s SO redundant, but seriously, with every TastyFace product I try, I think: “Yep, Kelly has done it again–perfectly.”

If you haven’t read any of this review until right now, what I want you to leave with is the notion that you need to check out Tastyface!

Bee Organics Facial Cream, Body Butter, Beeswax Candle Review

20130801-142557.jpg

Bee
Organics Skincare & Candles

“Skin Care Can Bee
Chemical Free.”

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

Ever since discovering the
amazing benefits of raw, organic honey and buying my first big
batch from Hunter’s
Honey Farm
in Martinsville, IN, I have been very
enthusiastic about all products honey-based. Bee Organics came onto
my radar while discovering unique, high quality brands on Twitter.
They were gracious enough to send me samples in order for me to try
their product for the first time. Mmmm honey!

Bee
Beautiful Whipped Facial Cream:

Bee
Organics’ Description:

Moisturizer for face and delicate skin. Also heals severely dry
skin. Helps even out skin tone by minimizing dark spots, blemishes,
acne, and rashes. Restores elasticity to skin. This Face Cream is
high in antioxidants which help fight free radicals which
prematurely age the skin. Ingredients: Organic
Raw Unrefined Shea Butter, Organic Almond Oil, Organic Raw Cold
Pressed Coconut Oil, Vitamin E My
Description &
Thoughts:
A little bit of this
cream goes a long way. The little packet of this product is lasting
a lot longer than I thought it would. It does a thorough job of
providing moisture to my skin. It also feels like it forms a
breathable, protective barrier on my skin. Nothing about this cream
is irritating–it is pure nourishment to my skin. This consistency
is somewhere in between a serum and a cream, to me, which I love.
It makes for an easy application. I tend to apply facial
moisturizers, creams, and/or serums when my face is still damp. The
beads of water on my skin help the product go on more evenly and
easily. Love the simple, clean ingredient list, too.

Bee
Soft Body Butter:

Bee
Organics’ Description:
“Organic Body Butter

(great for cracked heels). Helps fade scars, blemishes, dark spots,
and wrinkles. Prevents and soothes razor burn and minimizes acne.
Soothes skin irritation and rashes and restores elasticity to skin.
This Body Butter is high in antioxidants which help fight free
radicals which prematurely age the skin. All Bee

Gluten Free, Soy Free, and Chemical Free.

Ingredients: Organic Raw Cocoa Butter, Organic
Raw Unrefined Shea Butter, Organic Beeswax, Organic Cold pressed
Coconut Oil, Organic Almond Oil, and Vitamin E.
Note: This butter has a rich natural aroma
of chocolate. There are no artificial scents added.” My
Description & Thoughts:
This body
butter is truly a decedent treat. Like they suggest, it has a very
“rich natural aroma of chocolate.” It smells as if I am rubbing
chocolate cake batter on my skin as I apply it. So unexpectedly
yummy! Like the face cream, this body butter’s ingredient list is
simple and impressive. No unnecessary ingredients, no junk. You can
tell it, too. The texture feels rich and jam-packed with goodness.
A little dab of this will go a long way. That’s also how much it
takes to make you crave chocolate! 🙂

100%
Organic Beeswax Votive Candle:

Bee
Organics’ Description:
“Our
100% Organic Beeswax Candles are great for cleaning the air when
your family is sick but also gives off a pleasant aroma of honey.
Beeswax candles give off negative ions that remove dust, dirt,
odors, viruses, mold, and other pollutants from the air. Beeswax
candles are great for asthmatics or anyone who is allergic or
sensitive to scents. They are Non carcinogenic and Nontoxic and
they don’t give off soot like other candles do. Beeswax is the only
wax that exists in nature. Which means there are no processing
chemicals in beeswax. Beeswax candles have a high melting point
which means they have a much longer burning time than conventional
wax candles.” My
Description &
Thoughts:
I couldn’t get my
nose pressed up against this candle quick enough! It smells like
pure honey, fresh, sugary yumminess. I lit the candle right
away–it gives off a subtle and lovely scent. How wonderful the
benefits of this candle, as well (which I was unaware of, prior to
reading Bee Organics’ website). Reading their product description
of this candle makes me excited to purchase more in the future.
This could turn into a rant, but I will keep it brief…There are
so many “air freshener” products readily available in the grocery
store that are chock full of absolute garbage. Breathing these
products must be awful for our bodies. I find product like this one
(Bee Organics Candle) to be a big breath of fresh air, literally
and figuratively. I am in no way obligated to say this, but I
highly, highly recommend tossing your current store bought, junky
“air freshener” and get your hands on these candles. Your body and
your home will thank you.
