The Perfect Superfood Hot Chocolate Recipe

This post contains a recipe for the perfect superfood hot chocolate!

There’s something about the holiday season that makes you want to snuggle up with a warm cup of chocolate goodness! This superfood hot chocolate recipe will not disappoint.

Most store-bought hot chocolate mixes are rife with processed sugar and other ingredients that are added for shelf stability.  So, you probably experience a sugar rush followed by a crash after indulging in one of these (not to mention you increase the inflammation in your body).

The cool thing about a superfood drink is that you don’t sacrifice flavor but you increase the health benefits tenfold. Sign. Me. Up!  I also personally feel like the flavors are way more complex, interesting and satisfying.

I have made this drink many different ways with many different add ins,  but consider this recipe a great foundation for the superfood hot chocolate of your dreams.

Perfect Superfood Hot Chocolate Recipe

-1 tbsp Cacao Elixir (mood enhancing, overal vitality, exercise recovery)

-1/4 tsp Cordyceps Mushroom Powder (increased bodily oxygenation, athletic performance)

-1/4 tsp Chaga Mushroom Powder (grounding energy, gentle detox, immunity)

-2 cups plant based milk (almond, coconut, oat, hemp, cashew, etc. will do!)

*Optional add-in for various applications:

-5 drops liquid monk fruit sweetener

-1 tsp Spirit Tonic (for nighttime + relaxation)

-1 tsp MCT oil (for added flavor + healthy fats + sustained energy)

-2 capsules of Collagen (for protein + aided recovery)

-1 tsp Chi Tonic (for a morning boost of energy)

-1 tsp Love Tonic (for ladies; this blend nourishes the feminine)

-1/4 tsp Reishi Mushroom Powder (for resisting stress)

Mushroom + Cacao Coffee Recipe (+Ketogenic Friendly)

Freaked out by the idea of eating/drinking mushrooms? I’m here to help you get over that! This Mushroom + Cacao Coffee Recipe is just as delicious as it is restorative.

Why ‘Shrooms?

(no psychadelic effects in this drank, folks)

Various mushroom varieties (chaga, reishi, cordyceps, lion’s mane) can offer you all kinds of brain boosting + mental focus perks. Besides, it adds a wonderful rich + earthy full spectrum flavor to the back side your big gulps of coffee.

Mushrooms are classified as adaptogens, which essentially means that they help boost your immunity and make your body more resilient to stress. If you think about it, mushrooms grow in harsh and precarious environments. In my mind, it’s like we are taking on those robust + tough characteristics when we consume them.

Why Cacao Powder?

It’s the base of our beloved chocolate! Unlike the processed chocolate bars you’ll find in most store, raw cacao powder is an antioxidant powerhouse. Cacao will provide you with energy (without all the sugar), mood stabilization and even help you curb your cravings + satisfy that sweet tooth.

Why Cacao Butter?

When combined with a fat, the caffeine in coffee becomes more steadily absorbed and provides you with a sustained, gradual increase in focus, versus experiencing a jittery feeling from coffee consumption.

I like that Cacao Butter utilizes the fatty part of the cacao pod + that it’s vegan! You could also opt for a coconut-derived oil.

I don’t need to ask Why Coffee…

Coffee is the universe. Okay, but seriously, I probably don’t need to talk anyone into drinking coffee.

Recipe:

-Your favorite mug. A mug that makes you happy.

-1 flat Tbsp mushroom powder of your choice (I make a blend of Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Chaga and keep it in a jar on the counter)

-2 flat Tbsp cacao powder

-1 heaping Tbsp of cacao butter pieces (it comes in solid chunks at room temperature!)

-Fill up your cup the rest of the way with freshly brewed coffee.

*Looking for a caffeine free alternative? Add hot water instead of coffee.

Optional: 2 drops of liquid stevia or 1 teaspoon of powdered stevia

Tips:

You could blend it all together in a Nutribullet, but I normally have no problem just using a spoon. It’s normal for the fat to rise to the top.

Here on ROO, I write a whole stinkin’ lot about superfoods. This is because I truly believe in them. I live it,
I love it and I’ve seen the impact that they’ve had on my overall health.

Navitas Naturals is one of the superfood brands that I look to when I’m stocking up on the good stuff. Their quality is always excellent and I can expect to get organic ingredients from them (and the majority of the time, they are raw, too–the coconut chips are an exception). It’s such a neat thing to have a “go-to” brand like this one that you can look to with trust that they’ll provide an incredible product that doesn’t sacrifice quality for profit.

Not only is Navitas Naturals a leader in clean superfoods, but they are also a favorite of mine in regards to taste. They are masters at mixing several nutrient-rife foods/ingredients and creating a truly decadent, satisfying and rich flavor profile. I find myself turning the bag upside down to get every last morsel!

The way these chips could improve is it they were optimized for digestion (raw & sprouted, preferably). These snacks would not be considered “raw” as some heat and/or light toasting is used in creating these snacks. This is done to add a crispy, roasted flavor. However, nutrient-wise, I don’t think you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck, so to speak.

My Thoughts:

Holy freaking awesome superfood flavor goodness. That’s the best way to describe these two bags of heaven.

Navitas Naturals is one of my favorite sources to stock up on superfoods. The majority of their products are raw, while all of them are certified organic. Their standards for quality are up there–& they’ve earned a place on my “go-to” list for that reason. Navitas Naturals is also a very accessible brand, as you can find their products in Whole Foods, Natural Grocers & various other health food stores & markets.

Not only do they make big bags of superfoods like cacao, maca and goji berries, but they’ve concocted delicious & nutritious blends like these that are satisfying and good for you. The Chili Lime Coconut Chips are intensely savory & mouth-watering, with a zip from the chili lime flavor. They make the perfect healthy substitute for traditional potato chips. Being a hemp & cacao fanatic, I absolutely loved the Cacao Hemp Almonds. The bittersweet flavor of the cacao, the earthy taste of the hemp and the rich nutty flavor of the lightly-roasted almonds combine perfectly. I could eat the whole bag of each of these in one sitting. So tasty! (and guilt-free!)

The only thing I find myself wanting to improve with these snacks is that I wish they were raw. When I shop, I intentionally buy and often pay extra for raw coconut chips and raw almonds–this is to insure that I’m getting the biggest nutritional bang for my buck, so to speak. Thus, I find myself wanting these to be raw, even though the roasted flavor is indeed tasty. That said–nutrition is and will always remain top priority to me. Organic & raw is my gold standard.

Nut + Seed Cacao Protein Smoothie Recipe

This Nut + Seed Chocolate Protein Smoothie recipe combines soaked nuts and seeds including almonds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds with protein powder for a delicious smoothie that is full of complete plant-based protein, healthy fats and a plethora of other essential nutrients. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  • Raw cacao
  • Coconut manna (butter)
  • Almonds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Goji berries
  • 1 serving of your favorite plant-based protein

DIRECTIONS

  1. Soak the almonds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds in water overnight.
  2. Add all ingredients to blender and blend on high until a thoroughly smooth consistency.
  3. Garnish with goji berries.

My Thoughts:

Sunfood is amongst my very tippy top favorite superfood brands! The quality of their expansive range of products is far superior to most that you will see on shelves. To insure that I’m ingesting superfoods with the utmost nutrient content, I aim to always eat raw superfoods. Also, to insure that I’m minimizing my pesticide exposure and am effectively dodging GMOs, I aim to always eat organic superfoods. Sunfood meets BOTH of those specs.

Of this bunch of samples, I enjoyed the Sun is Shining Green Superfood & the Superfood Smoothie Mix the most. I look to greens in my diet to provide me a large amount of the vital trace minerals that my body requires to operate at its maximum capability. I love the portability of these powdered greens; I add them to my morning smoothie and even take them with me on-the-go for a quick green drink on-the-fly. The superfood smoothie mix I value for the range of superfoods that it allows me to consume at once–this dense concoction includes the powder form of goji, maqui, camu camu, maca, acai, cacao, lucuma and brown rice protein to make them all more readily digestible & to make the drink more satisfying. It tastes unique & delicious–you really get to appreciate all the flavors of these powerful superfruits. For an added boost of protein (which I like to do in the mornings), I add the Raw Vanilla Brown Rice Protein & love the pure taste of it. Though the superfood smoothie mix already contains a small amount of acai powder, I added the pure Acai Powder to my smoothies (because I had it on hand!) and found that it served as an extra ka-pow of revitalizing power to my drink (as well as a beautiful & vibrant color!) Acai is so rich in antioxidants and nourishing vitamins thatI consider it an excellent beauty food to keep your skin looking dewy, protected and fresh.

I took the Chlorella Tablets as a preworkout energy boost. You can certainly chew these little tablets, but I chose to swallow them with a glass of water. I love the feeling that green energy provides. It’s real, it’s sustained & there are by no means any negative side effects–just pure goodness and an uplifting feeling.

There is so much information out there about superfoods, their benefits and so on. What I can say from personal experience is that incorporating superfoods into my daily nutrition routine is the single best thing I’ve ever done for my health. The quality and impact of superfoods compared to taking a multi-vitamin pill is a joke, in that there’s no comparison. Raw, organic superfoods will provide your body with real, recognizable fuel that will take good care of your body from the inside out. Also, many ailments are a result of a nutrient deficiency. Superfoods combat both malabsorption issues & nutrient deficiency as they normalize your internal pH, making it more alkaline, as well as giving your system a healthy shock of nutrients.

Go superfood yourself!!
