Recipe: How to Make Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof Coffee

Have you heard of this? Bulletproof coffee is becoming increasingly more prevalent–as it should. Without diving-head-first into the boat loads of science behind these ingredients and the synergy that exists between them, I’ll give you the…

Semi-basic run down for why bulletproof coffee can take your coffee routine to the next level & a few tips on making your own:

  • Improves your mental clarity
  • Slows the assimilation of caffeine and fats in your body, making them more filling & giving you sustained energy versus just a quick boost.
  • Coupling the coffee with fats like grass fed butter, MCT oil (you can also use palm oil or coconut oil) improves the satiating effect of the drink and the natural caffeine content of the coffee bean helps make the fatty acids more readily available for absorption and energy use in the body.
  • Laird describes this robust drink as one that will give you “a whole new focus.”
  • The presence of omega-3 fatty acids in the butter and oils help reduce inflammation in the body by decreasing triglyceride levels.
  • Make sure to choose a coffee blend that is organic (preferably a dark or espresso roast, as those often contain less acid.
  • You can make this completely vegan and dairy free just by using the MCT oil, coconut oil and/or palm oil.

My interest in bulletproof coffee has existed for a while now–initially prompted by this video by one of my main professional-athlete-inspirers (surfing legend, fitness & nutrition guru), Laird Hamilton.

My Recipe for Bulletproof Coffee:

(created with inspiration from many!)

No exact measuring here! Everything is approximate.

Instructions here are minimal:

  • Simply combine all ingredients (sans coffee) in your coffee cup.
  • Brew your coffee as usual, separately.
  • When finished, pour the hot coffee into your cup to combine all of the ingredients.
  • The heat from the coffee will liquify the oils and help everything to combine.
  • Stir & ENJOY!

I’ve loaded up that list with the links to all of the products that I used.

Also, it’s just worth mentioning that I drink this is the morning in place of a breakfast. Lately, I’ve been practicing intermittent fasting (only liquids until 11amish, then eating from about 11am-7pm) paired with a ketogenic approach to eating. I’m not counting macros right now, but I mindfully to good sources of fat for energy and then an adequate (filling) amount of protein.

Have you ever made your own bulletproof coffee? I’d love to hear about it. Happy Brewing!

My Thoughts:

If you’ve read any of my prior skin care, hair care & nutrition reviews, then you’re familiar with the fact that I strive for 100% organic (the name of my blog even suggests it!) 🙂

That said, there is a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum lies the junky, chemical-pumped, hazardous products that are so loaded with harmful ingredients that it’s amazing they are allowed to be sold. On the other end of the spectrum is purity: no bull honkey, completely organic wonderment. The Gnarly Whale peppermint beach waves spray falls somewhere in that spectrum, closer to the pure end.

I do like seeing a simple ingredient list in which I can read and recognize all of the ingredients. That’s the case with this spray. However, none of them are organic. The whole reason that organic ingredients are important is because they lessen the toxic burden on the body. So, some people might view this ingredient list and see nothing wrong with it. I see it with a more honed in vision and am wishing for more quality here. I know what non-organic can mean and I don’t want that. I want to use the best products on my hair and skin.

All of that said, this beach spray performs well (which I’m sure is all that some people care about). It provides the hair a bit of volume and texture. The way I see it, it helps you do something with somewhat dirty hair. Peppermint is one of my favorite essential oil scents, and I really enjoy this smell in my hair. I see this product as a pretty good starter for someone looking to start making beauty swaps: throwing out their old junky products and beginning to use products that are closer to nature.

The Expansive Range of Coconut Oil Uses

Coconut Oil

This post is about the many uses for coconut oil.

Contains: pure, organic, extra virgin coconut oil. (is solid at room temperature, liquid when in the palm of your hand or heated otherwise)

Description: Coconut oil boasts many health benefits from its healthy Omega fats. One of the good fats, lauric acid, makes up about 50% of coconut oil. Lauric acid is a rare medium-chain fatty acid found in human breast milk. It supports healthy metabolism and is being studied for its anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial health-protecting properties. Some researchers predict that lauric acid will become as well known in health circles as Omega-3 is today.

My personal favorite product that Nutiva makes is their Coconut Oil. This stuff is the real deal and is exponentially beneficial to both the inside and outside of your body. If you have ever read the ingredient list on, say, body lotion, lip balm, or make-up remover, you perhaps had the same shocked reaction that I did. What are all of those chemicals, and why am I about to put them into/onto my body? Coconut oil’s obvious use is to replace the current oil you use in your kitchen, and it does an excellent job of it, as well adding a wonderful flavor to your cooking. What is less obvious is that Nutiva’s coconut oil has so many other amazing uses.

Thus far, I am and have been using Coconut Oil for these purposes:

-Eye makeup remover

-Lip balm

-Skin moisturizer (a little goes a long way)

-Oil treatment for hair (either apply root to end and let sit before shampooing, or apply to ends of hair before styling)

-Cuticle softener

-Used for oil pulling

-Used as the base of my:

-Shaving cream

-Tanning oil

-Added to morning coffee

-In cooking, baking & smoothie making

-Taken by the spoonful
