Midori Matcha Powder

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

About Midori Matcha Company:

“Matcha is made from freshly picked green tea leaves that are stone-ground into a fine powder. With its rich flavor and creamy texture, it’s considered one of the world’s healthiest beverages. In fact, just one bottle of Midori matcha is equal to ten cups of ordinary green tea! From our perspective, it’s just about the nicest thing you can do for your body.

Energy and Focus

Matcha provides steady, crash-free energy for up to 6 hours. The secret is in its high concentration of L-Theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid that sharpens focus and lifts mood.

Detox & Rejuvenate

Matcha is packed with vibrant green chlorophyll which helps the body cleanse itself of harmful chemicals and toxins. Matcha also has dietary fiber which helps with digestion, controls appetite and stabilizes blood sugar.

Strength and Fat Loss

Matcha contains more antioxidants than any fruit or vegetable on the planet. These powerful nutrients strengthen your immune system, boost metabolism and promote fat loss.”

My Thoughts:

I’m always eager and looking to try new superfoods and supplements that I believe can help boost my health in some way. To be honest, getting me to swap out coffee for matcha tea was a bit of a struggle at first. I love my coffee ritual–everything about it. But, in my mind, I got to a point where there was no denying that green tea matcha powder potentially has a whole-heck-of-a-lot more antioxidants, vitamins and minerals when compared to coffee that has been brewed. Thus, I decided that I’d certainly give matcha its fair shot.

Midori seems to be a fantastic brand that has focused their efforts solely on products that highlight and focus on matcha powder. This is a neat idea because it’s essentially an organic, plant-based brand that has harnessed the rejuvenating effects of matcha to serve as a natural energy drink. Not only do they sell this pure matcha powder, but they’ve also created cold-brew matcha drinks that will be on sale soon. I was lucky enough to try one of their little cans of green goodness.

So, here’s where I really get “picky” about it. In my ideal world, this powder would be raw AND organic. It’s clearly labeled as organic, however it’s unclear whether this powder has been processed with heat. This is huge deal to me because there is a major difference in nutritional value when you compare a raw food to a cooked/heated food. It’s just not even close. There is such a significant health benefits from raw plants; you won’t get those same benefits with a product that’s been heat treated.

I was recently excited to hear that Midori’s matcha powder and drinks are both considered raw. They provide a great explanation of how their drinks are made using cold pressure processing on their website. That’s refreshing to know that Midori is organic & raw. Well worth the money, in that case!

In regards to preparation, the can of matcha powder suggests that the powder be mixed with hot water. I understand that tea is traditionally made with hot water, but–I try to do things as raw as I can, as often as I can. So, instead of using their method, I mix a small amount (I don’t measure, but I’d say it’s about a teaspoon) in my morning superfood drink–along with other goodies like cacao powder, turmeric, cinnamon, etc.

I find that it does indeed provide me with a noticeable energy boost (not jittery, just a good & sustained feeling). Some days, I consume the matcha instead of my morning coffee. Matcha has a naturally occurring caffeine content similar to that of which occurs in a cup of brewed coffee. The difference is that matcha provides more brain boosting power and antioxidants to your system. I like incorporating both matcha and coffee in my diet (you can also find green coffee powder!). For those who don’t drink coffee, matcha may the perfect everyday energy solution.

My Thoughts:

I am a huge devotee to juice–I have no problem putting money into quality juices because I believe they are such an excellent, nutrient dense drink. I was happy to discover Evolution juices at my local Whole Foods. I was instantly hooked. The array of flavors that they bottle are exciting and delicious.

I shared the specifics (above) about all of the juices that I have yet to try (there are many more mentioned on the Evolution site). Needless to say, only four of them are pictured at the top.

Some of the juices like Pineapple Cucumber Ginger & Pineapple Coconut Water are less dense than juices like Super Green and Defense Up. In other words, they are a lighter, less filling drink. I enjoy the lighter drinks for pre or post workout replenishment, whereas the dense and rich juices are my favorite about an hour before or after activity, as they’re more like meals.

I have yet to try a juice that I do not like–they’re all unique and spectacularly tasting.

Super Green tastes the best

Organic V & Ruby Roots are the most impressive to me as far as nutritional value goes

Sweet Burn has a unique and pleasant zip of sweetness and kick of heat

Defense Up is a perfect, tangy breakfast juice

Pineapple Coconut Water & Pineapple Cucumber Ginger are my favorite right after a run

Sweet Greens with Lemon is a no-frills, green smack in the mouth. I like it when I am feeling a little bit depleted (after a long run).

The only reason I don’t give these juices 5 stars is because not all of them are entirely organic. Many of them are–and I tend to purchase those the most. I look forward to trying more Evolution flavors and seeing more organic fruits and veggies in the future!

Nature’s Fusions Essential Oils Review: Fire & Ice, Vertigo, Dragon’s Breath

Nature’s Fusions Essential Oils

This is a review of Nature’ Fusions essential oils.

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

About Nature’s Fusions:

The Highest Quality in the World, Guaranteed.

We have worked for years with the best international suppliers, chemists, and laboratories around the world to get the highest quality certified therapeutic grade essential oils in the world. All of our oils are certified to be 100% pure and free of pesticides or other chemical residues. They have undergone rigorous testing to insure they meet or exceed all international standards on Purity and Safety. All of our oils have been cross tested using mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography to ensure both extract purity and composition potency of each batch. Would you like to see the data charts from the tests?  Just ask! We understand that these graphs and charts may be difficult to read or understand and would be happy to discuss the scientific details with you if you’re so inclined.

Ultimately, unless you can read somewhat complicated data charts, are familiar with current medical research, and can determine the impact of hundreds of individual components in essential oils, knowing which oils are not only ‘pure’ but also good enough to be ‘therapeutic’ is a question of trust.

Here at Nature’s Fusions, we value your trust more than anything else – we have put in the time, effort and money to bring you the best essential oils in the world, just as you would expect a doctor would do with a prescribed medication – and this is shown by our 100% satisfaction guarantee and our commitment to honesty in communication. Essential oils are awesome for the uses in which they work. But there are plenty of times they don’t – and while there are plenty of articles that claim essential oils will cure every malady known to man, here we try to cut through the misinformation and pseudo-science that surrounds the essential oil field.  For that reason, we are an ‘open book’ – ask us anything and we’ll be happy to answer.

So give it a try. Try us out, and we guarantee that you will be impressed – not only with the quality and utility of our products, but with our prices, our honesty, and our dedication to you as a person.

If you are currently using an essential company that tries to hide information or won’t divulge their secrets and ‘proprietary’ items, then I wouldn’t trust them.  This is your health – what is there to hide?  Would you trust a doctor that wouldn’t tell you what was in the medicine he/she prescribed?”

Dragon's Breath

Dragon’s Breath Blend

Nature’s Fusions’ Description:

“Protective Blend

Cinnamon, lemon, clove, eucalyptus – the ancient code for powerful strength.

Diffuse, use to clean surfaces, or apply very sparingly – it’s strong.”

Fire & Ice

Fire & Ice Blend

Nature’s Fusions’ Description:

“Muscles and Massage

Peppermint, wintergreen, lavender, marjoram, clary sage, basil, roman chamomile, and helichrysum combine in this fusion for muscles and massage.

Dilute 5-10 drops of Fire & Ice in 5ml (1 tsp) carrier oil for massage.”

Vertigo

Vertigo Blend

Nature’s Fusions’ Description:

“Grounding

Peppermint, coriander, and ginger blend in Vertigo to promote grounding and mental health.

Apply 1-3 drops to the hands and breathe deeply.”

My Thoughts and Description

In recent years I have been intrigued by essential oils. They smell incredibly fragrant, are known for their healing ability and are convenient for making homemade concoctions.

These three blends are neat in that they target specific things. They can be used three ways: ingested, applied topically, or used in a diffuser.

I got married in September and in the week prior to the wedding, I started feeling sick (sore throat, lost voice, runny nose). Right after feeling these symptoms, I put several drops of each blend into my humidifier to try and kick the symptoms from the get-go. I didn’t feel better instantly, but over several hours, I felt considerably better after using the humidifier.

Many brands and essential oil specialists will recommend that if these oils are ingested, they should be used with caution, as they are very potent. I understand the caution to an extent, but I can’t help but shake my head when thinking that so many prescription medications are not offered up with such a dramatic caution. Here we have plant based healers and we are being told to pump the breaks–in my opinion, the measures of precaution aren’t focused in the right place. But, that’s a whole other issue for whole other post. 🙂

Simply put, I like to use the Dragon’s Breath blend for cold symptoms, the Fire & Ice blend for making my Homemade “Icy-Hot”, and the Vertigo blend for times when I am feeling overworked, stressed, and/or dizzy. They all work very well for their suggested uses. I’d recommend these for anyone interested in the healing powers of essential oils, as Nature’s Fusions has a lot of blends that seem to be unique to this brand.

In regards to these essential oils and the word “organic,” I’ll share this that I learned from the very helpful Co-Founder of Nature’s Fusions, David:

“We don’t intend to seek organic certification. We do testing on our oils to ensure that they have no harmful ingredients and to ensure that they have all the proper chemical constituents to be effective. Organic is usually a proxy for wanting to ensure quality, along with a desire to improve growing conditions. Some of our oils are organic, some are wildcrafted, but in every case testing shows that they don’t have any residuals.”

Persian / Parissa Wax Review

20130810-115542.jpg

Parissa / Persian Cold Wax & Strips

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

Alley at Parissa Waxing was extremely friendly and generous in helping me acquire samples from their sister company, Persian Wax. Here is a bit of background about Persian Wax:

“Each box of Persian Wax is a validation of the traditions of the past, where time spent on oneself is celebrated and satisfying, and results in not only looking beautiful on the outside but feeling beautiful on the inside.

Familiar to generations of Eastern women, this age-old recipe has become the benchmark against which all other hair removal products are measured. Now, at home is the Western world, this authentic, all-natural hair removal product brings delight to women in search of dazzling, extraordinarily smooth, hair-free skin.

A combination of exotic craft and premium ingredients, Persian Hair Remover® remains unchanged in both formula and contents for over thirty years. It is artistry – not chemistry, that produces a hair remover of inimitable quality in the spirit of Eastern beauty and elegance.”

Alley also provided me with some more tidbits about these products:

“Persian Wax which is specially formulated for sensitive skin.  Like Parissa, Persian Wax has only 3 ingredients, sugar, lemon and water – and is held up to the same ethos and eco-standards which include the use of quality, food-grade ingredients, no chemicals, parabens or fragrance and of course, completely animal friendly.

You’ll find the packaging bold and elegant, in keeping with the 3000 year old Middle-Eastern  recipe from which the product stems. We’ve added the quick & easy-to -use Persian Wax Strips – formulated with gentle cream wax, also for sensitive skin.”

Cold Wax

Persian Wax’s Description:

“Persian Cold Wax is the original time honoured recipe that women have been trusting for centuries. And now in celebration of Eastern elegance and beauty we have repackaged our luxurious cold wax – but kept the recipe unchanged. Because Persian Cold Wax works – beautifully so.

Ingredients:

Wax:  sucrose, aqua, citric acid.”

My Description & Thoughts:

The idea of waxing is intimidating and time intensive in my mind, or at least it was before discovering a product that makes this process easier. Persian Wax (sister company of Parissa Wax) does this with products that work well by way of great ingredients.

The waxing routine is something that can be expensive to have professionally done on a regular basis. I find that having a great brand like Persian or Parissa wax on hand is a way more economical choice.

In regards to cold wax in a jar versus strips that come with wax already applied, I think it is a personal preference and is also dependent upon which area of the body you are waxing. For example, if I am  are waxing areas on your face that require extra attention and precision, then using the cold wax in a jar is what is most effective because it allows me to control exactly where I am placing the wax and which areas have hair that need to be removed. These areas, for me, are my upper lip and eyebrows. On the other hand, if I am waxing an area with a larger surface area of hair, or an area that the wax strip size just happens to suit well, I prefer to use the strips with the wax already applied. For me, these areas are the bikini line, legs and arm pits.

This jar of is a great size to travel with (8 oz.–wouldn’t fit in a carry-on, but wouldn’t hardly take up any room in a checked bad if flying). The wax itself is comprised of simple, pure ingredients that prevent the skin from being irritated. The simplicity of the ingredient list might suggest that this product is not effective. However, the contrary is true. They have this mixture right–it does a great job getting all of the hairs that the wax is applied to. I see myself going back to Parissa & Persian wax strips in the future for all of my waxing needs. Only improvement would come from entirely organic ingredients.

Wax Strips

Persian Wax’s Description:

“Luxurious cream-wax formula designed specifically for sensitive skin. Convenient, mess-free, easy to use and 40 strips/box means you’ll always have enough!

Ingredients:

Wax: glyceryl rosinate (pine resin), ricinus communis (castor oil), cera alba (beeswax), titanium dioxide

Aftercare oil: canola oil, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), lemon and orange blossom, menthol.”

 My Description & Thoughts:
After reading my thoughts above about the cold wax in a jar, you will have an accurate depiction of how I feel about these wax strips. What I have to add is that I prefer these strips, if I could only pick one of the two. You can’t beat the fact that they are readymade. Pop them out of the box and you are ready to wax. I find that the width of these strips are perfect for my bikini line, no need for me to trim the strips to fit. They do a thorough job of removing hairs and leaving my skin clear looking. My skin was not irritated at all after using them–just stung initially after the hair removal, as expected. These wax strips are my “go-to” for waxing. Simple, practical, portable, effective, and made of quality ingredients. Only improvement would come from entirely organic ingredients.
