My Experience:

It’s a been a while since I began my stokageness surrounding protein. However, developing an interest and focus on getting collagen in my diet is brand new. The word collagen has been on my radar for a while. Just like any emerging word in the nutrition world, I had to sort the nonsense from the real. sense. Turns out, collagen is the real deal, and the benefits reach much further than the beauty perks.

Here’s what it is: you body needs three macronutrients in order to healthfully and effectively carry out all necessary bodily functions. These three macronutrients are carbohydrates + fat + protein.

Protein plays an integral role in helping your body to repair, rebuild and rejuvenate (even at the cellular level. Collagen is key in strengthening your integumentary system (hair + skin + nails) and also forms the foundation for repairing connective tissue (ligaments + tendons + bones). Soo, it’s a big deal.

I find that my body responds well to a diet in which I intentionally aim for 40/30/30, meaning 40% fat, 30% carbs and 30% protein. Some of my protein comes from fish, chicken and occasionally beef, but I habitually have a protein recovery shake after workouts to aid my body in repairing itself (thus, growing, thus making me more able to do harder workouts).

I’ve been using the Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides  and Marine Collagen interchangeably for the last several weeks and I completely and utterly love them. Not only does my daily recovery feel great (I’ve even helped myself back from a herniated disk back injury), but my skin and hair feel healthier + stronger than they ever have.

I use two scoops combined with some nut milk or juice in a blender bottle after a workout. I found that a blender bottle is best for taking this collagen in a cold drink to go. If you don’t have a way to shake it up, it will “gel”, as they explain on their website. It’s no problem with a shaker bottle. I’ve also seen Shut the Kale Up” mix hers with hot coffee. Right on!

If there’s one dietary tweak that has made the biggest impact on how healthy I feel + how healthy my body looks, it’s been making sure I am getting enough high quality protein to help my body rebuild. When I am not on my protein game, I’m not my best. This I know. I commend Vital Proteins for their commitment to non-gmo. I would imagine that what makes an organic certification tricky for beef and fish products is all of the variables. I’d guess the cattle’s food intake could be controlled, but not for the fish.

It does appear like Vital Proteins is very forward thinking in how they are sourcing for their products. It would be insightful to learn more about how one successfully creates a beef-based collagen product and insure’s that it’s away from pesticides and herbicides. I couldn’t find this exact information on the Vital Proteins website, but I enjoyed reading about how the wild-caught snapper are sustainably harvested and the cattle are grass-fed in Brazil, and that is still the norm there.

I’d love to know more about YOUR experience with collagen!

_______________

Magnesium Powder

“Magnesium is important.

It’s found in every cell, it’s the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body and it’s necessary in over 300 reactions within the body.

But unfortunately, most modern farming practices have led to soil depletion of minerals including magnesium. This, combined with a lack of fresh foods, the consumption of a highly processed diet and other contributing factors, is why dietary intakes for most have diminished significantly.

Well, we’ve got good news for you! Garden of Life is excited to introduce its newest extension to our best-selling Dr. Formulated Probiotics line: Magnesium Relax & Restore.

Dr. Formulated Magnesium Relax & Restore is the first-ever whole food organic pea protein magnesium chelate created with USA-grown organic peas. This delicious, fizzy drink is formulated to help calm and relax you, leading to a good night’s sleep while restoring your body’s optimal magnesium levels. † It also features a dose of live probiotics to support healthy digestion.

While everyone needs magnesium, those who will benefit most from Relax & Restore are people who are looking to relax, de-stress, sleep better, improve mood and combat fatigue.

Relax & Restore is available in three flavors: Original (unflavored), Orange Creamsicle and Raspberry Lemon. So, what’s the best way to take it? We recommend adding one serving to 8 ounces of room temperature water. Let it fizz, stir well and enjoy!

We could all benefit from a little relaxation and restoration.”

My Experience:

Collagen is a word that I hear every day working at a juice shop + clean eats haven. It’s a large part of the beneficial properties that make up bone broth. Collagen promotes muscle and joint health as well as the vitality of hair, skin and nails–making it a beauty regimen go-to for many women.

Of course of course of course, Garden of Life came out with a super-powered plant based version of this supplement, made by harnessing specific plant compounds that boost collagen production in the body. Best I can tell, this product is EXCELLENT in regards to quality, which I’ve come to expect from Garden of Life.

My hair and skin feels healthier than it’s ever been. With this supplement being a part of my routine, I’ve got to think that it’s played a role.

I was medium excited about the collagen, but large excited about the magnesium powder. I have seemed magnesium powder in the past from different brands to help alleviate these problems:

-painful menstrual cramps

-difficulty sleeping (restlessness mostly due to exercise-induced soreness)

-hormone balancing

-overall health and organ function

Because I never have had to question Garden of Life’s quality, I was amped to see that they came out with a magnesium powder. I immediately switched from the brand I was using. I’ve found that it has helped my boyfriend and I both sleep better and more soundly–I’ve also found that my overall energy level is higher and my cycles more seamless. I definitely plan on restocking when we are out.
