My Thoughts:

I’m really steered away from regularly snacking on chips as a means of satisfying cravings. Thus, these pita puffs were a bit of a change. I do occasionally eat some wheat products and do not have major digestive issues–though I feel more energetic and light when I limit wheat and most grains.

These pita puffs taste good, with good ingredients (but not great). I like that the ingredient list items are all recognizable, but it is not indicative of a brand that is using organic ingredients. Organic is what I strive for, needless to say.

Comparatively speaking, these snacks are unique (shape, texture & light crunch) and contain better ingredients than the majority of the chips and snacks you’ll find in your local grocery store, as their ingredients are non-gmo. I’d say their above average taste-wise and quality-wise, but not the best.

My Thoughts:

I am fascinated by brands that take one healthy food and generate a plethora of products with it as its foundation. GoGo Quinoa makes quinoa-packed goodies that range from vegetarian paella to cake mix.

If you have read any of my prior blog posts, you are aware that ingredients are of the utmost importance to me, regardless of taste. After reading GoGo Quinoa’s ingredient lists, mission, and method behind farming, I feel great about this brand. The ingredient list is chock full of organic ingredients, and their products also boast an Eco Cert Label. This means, from the Eco Cert website:

“Ecocert inspects products on the basis of this specification, and issues organic certification. The products in question must bear the wording ‘Ecocert-certified’. This is the only labeling guaranteeing organic certification for the consumer. The product can consequently be marketed being described as ‘organic.'”

So, in other words, a brand with this certification has been deemed organic, meaning:

“grown avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers or synthetic products, in ground fertilized with organic fertilizers and natural minerals favorable to life within the soil, application of the precautionary principle.”

In regards to taste, these products are very enjoyable. Sometimes, you try a cake mix that contains more healthful ingredients and it just does not taste good. In this case, all of these GoGo Quinoa products are very tasty. You can tell that there is a little something different about them, but it’s not a bad thing. If anything, the use of quinoa and the other grains like amaranth add some earthiness to the dishes.

It’s worth mentioning that I typically avoid grains. I don’t consume them on a regular basis. There are many differing opinions and thoughts on quinoa, but I consider it to be a complete protein and a seed. A few of these products contain rice flour–which I would typically stray from. I try to get my carbohydrate intake from mainly fruit. With all of that rambling, I simply am meaning to say that these products are not a gigantic part of my diet. They are a way to splurge healthfully, sans gluten.

The cookies and the cake were my favorites (can you say sweet tooth?). I could have eaten the whole box of cookies in one sitting. The paella and quinoa burgers are great because they can serve as a delicious alternative for those that do not eat meat. I do consume meat, myself, but I realize that there are many of you out there that are perhaps looking for vegetarian alternatives. Meat eater or not, though, I would recommend GoGo Quinoa products to all of you. Great quality, great flavors and an all around great brand with a thoughtful mission and outlook on producing food.

Health Warrior Chia Bar Review

Health Warrior

This is a review of Health Warrior Chia Bars.

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

About Health Warrior:

POWERED BY CHIA

There’s a fire inside us all.
Silently blazing, pushing us to do more, go further.
When everything else says stop, no more,
and pleads for you to quit, the fire charges onward.
Fueled by desire. By ambition. By courage.
It’s the fire that gets you out of bed in the morning
and through your day with verve.
It’s the fire that gets you over that peak,
and through that meeting,
and into the new week ready for anything.
At Health Warrior, we fuel that fire.
With wholesome, nutritious, convenient foods.
So you know it will always be there, inside you,
fueled the right way, with the right foods.

Five centuries after the Aztec Warriors built an empire on the power of Chia, we learned about the benefits of Chia while reading the best-selling book Born to Run, about the Tarahumara Indians and their jaw-dropping long-distance runs. The Tarahumara, like the Aztecs before them, are Powered by Chia.

We looked into it further, and were floored by what we found. Turns out Chia is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.

We started eating Chia every day, on everything. Suddenly we were working out harder, lifting heavier, feeling stronger, and running farther, faster.

With that, Health Warrior was born.

Health Warrior is dedicated to vetting the world’s growers for the highest quality Chia and helping people conquer the many challenges of their everyday lives.”

Are all chia seeds created equal?

No. A thousand times no! Health Warrior has made it our mission to vet out the most Premium Chia Seeds and bring them to you.

If a farmer harvests Chia too early, many of the nutrition benefits are lost. Our growers harvest at the exact right time, and use No Tillage Farming, which is environmentally sustainable and produces healthy soil. Healthy soil = great nutrients for the Chia plant = the very best Chia = Chia, the Warrior Way.

Our organically grown Chia Seeds have 100% traceability from Farm to Package and are Kosher, Halal, Non-GMO, and Gluten-Free. They’re also listed as an EU Novel Food and boasts Global GAP, GMP & HACCP Certifications. Not to mention, we have a guaranteed purity level of 99.9%. Unlike some of the other guys, there’s no accidental rocks, dirt, or twigs in Health Warrior Chia Seeds!”

Ingredient List from the Acai Berry Bar:

My Thoughts:

First of all, I love everything that Health Warrior stands for and promotes: pushing yourself, challenging your body and fueling up right. That’s how I aim to do it!

A great tasting, high quality bar is hard to come by, especially one packed with chia seeds. I have been a fan of chia seeds for several years now as a great source of healthful omega fats. I had yet, though, to find a bar like this one that truly showcases chia seeds in a convenient little pack.

I love the use of agave syrup as a sweetener–it has a low glycemic index which means it doesn’t make your blood sugar skyrocket (which can trigger weight gain). To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of brown rice syrup, brown rice crisps and oats because I strive for a grain-free diet. Those components are the few aspects that I didn’t like about the bars.

As far as quality goes,  I am excited to see many organic ingredients, most of which are very nutritionally dense. Taste-wise, they are hearty bars with a little zip of flavor. The chia is the primary crunch you experience and each flavor has its own unique sweetness and yumminess. The flavor (banana nut, for example) is not overpowering & it doesn’t taste like a bar full of sugar. It’s truly a bar that will fuel you, not simply satisfy a sweet tooth. At 100 calories, it is the perfect size snack to enjoy mid-workout if you are outdoors training for long periods. I also see it as ideal to put into a Camelbak or hiking pack for hikes & outdoor adventures.

The banana nut, coffee and chocolate peanut butter turned out to be my favorite flavors. If I had to pick one, it would be the coffee bar–I so enjoyed eating one with my morning cup o’ joe!

I love the shirt that Health Warrior gave me to rock–I will proudly do so! I believe these bars to be unique, almost entirely organic, hearty and satisfying.

Garden of Life Wild Rose Detox & Raw Fit Review

Garden of Life

Overall Rating: images

I have done several reviews and giveaways on Garden of Life products and believe they create high quality, organic supplements.

If you are submerged in the world of health products, you’ve likely heard about the scrutiny that Garden of Life has been under in regards to their products containing heavy metals. My brief  response (just to address it)–as dismissive as it may be, is that when you’re on the top, many will try to knock you down. I feel a bit that way with this GOL situation. As a successful brand, it does not surprise me that they have individuals who are seeking to find flaws. That said, I do not know the specific, scientific data from the tests that were run on their products, but I would venture to say that these supplements are still worlds better than most.

My Thoughts:

I used Raw Fit and Raw Meal both for about a 6 month period in 2013 because I found that it was hard to find a protein that’s organic, non-gmo and free of common food allergens (like dairy, gluten, soy). In 2014 so far, I’ve seen the biggest strides in my running performance and overall healthful feeling from omitting grains. Because of this, I haven’t been incorporating brown-rice based proteins like this GOL Raw Fit product. This is a more “paleo” way of eating and I’ve found that I feel my best when I stick to it. So, instead of brown-rice proteins, I’ve been using organic whey and hemp based proteins.

I realize that everyone is different, and many of you are likely vegans. For that group of people, I see the appeal for using GOL brown rice protein, as it’s a plant based source of protein that is satisfying and abides by the vegan way of eating. For paleo-eaters similar to myself, I’d recommend listening to you body and trying to figure out when you feel your best. Is it when you omit certain foods like dairy and grains and increasing your intake of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables? That’s been the case for me.

All of that said, this protein tastes wonderful, is high quality and I think is a great recommendation for many individuals. I am an avid coffee drinker and have been a Marley Coffee fan long before GOL collaborated with them to create this product. Their coffee is USDA organic and is delicious & rich (the roasts are also named after Bob Marley songs–so awesome!). You can check out Marley Coffee products here.

Wild Rose Herbal Detox

About:

“For over 25 years, the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox Program has been the leader in providing a complete detoxification of the liver, colon, kidneys and lymphatic system in Canada. Now, thanks to Garden of Life, this amazing cleanse program is available to you. By following the recommended diet and taking the herbal formulas provided, the Wild Rose Herbal D-Tox Program helps promote a healthy balance between assimilation and elimination.†

For many, a new detox is the beginning of a new lifestyle, and a time for breaking unwanted habits.† Whether to stay in good health, to support a specific health goal, or to use after over-consumption, a detoxification program can be an integral part of your personal approach to maintain overall health.”

My Thoughts:

I’m all about making detoxification a part of my every day life. Detoxing don’t have to mean implementing a product like this, but occasionally its a great, extra boost. Some great every day habits for detoxing are thinking blended greens (not juiced), fresh fruit and vegetable juices and drinking citrus-infused water.

I was impressed with the list of herbs that this GOL Detox contains, as many of them are naturally potent liver detoxifiers.

I think a common misconception with detoxing is that you are going to feel this instant WHOA! I FEEL CLEANSED! In reality, it’s not like that. If you pay attention to how your body feels daily, though, you will notice that you have a bit more energy, you don’t have digestive issues (bloating, stomach aches. constipation) when you do a detox like this. Those are the main things I noticed.

I would recommend this cleanse to anyone that has not done an herbal detox before. This detox can also help those that suffer from acne–as many acne problems are a result of a liver that is not functioning optimally.

These herbs are different than other detoxes that just use fiber to clear out your digestive tract. You’ll love the slight boost it gives you–you’ll feel cleaner and clearer, inside and out.

Paleo, Grain-Free Bread Squares Recipe

Paleo, Grain-Free Bread Squares

I have been looking for a way to incorporate some “baked goods” without consuming traditional bread. I put some similar ingredients together that I’ve used to make homemade protein balls/cookies, and came up with these bread squares! They truly are hearty and delicious–you don’t miss the grains one bit.

Ingredients:

-1 egg

-2 tablespoons of coconut oil or ghee (unclarified butter)

-2 cups of almond meal or flour (they are the same thing)

-1 cup of coconut flour

-1 cup of coconut or almond milk

-2 teaspoons baking powder

-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

Instructions:

-Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

-Mix together the egg, coconut milk and coconut oil.

-Once mixed, add in the dry ingredients: almond flour, coconut flour, baking soda, baking powder.

-Pour into desired pan and bake for 35 minutes.

ENJOY!
