About Protein 17:

My Thoughts:

Not only do I love that this protein is organic & from grass-fed cows, but I love that Protein 17 makes an effort to point out that the practice of injecting cows with artificial hormone treatment is harmful to the animal and ultimately harmful to us in consuming a product that is derived from cow’s milk. I admire the fact that they are transparent about their approach to whey protein–which is to create organic, non-gmo, whey protein containing nothing artificial.

It’s hard to find protein powder that is unflavored. I am loving that I can mix this protein with anything I want without worrying about the flavors meshing. I like it best blended with almond milk and a few strawberries.

This is not the only whey protein on the market, obviously, but it is absolutely one of the highest quality. There are a few other lines of organic whey protein out there–I am finding that amongst those brands, most of them are comparable. These top organic whey protein brands appear passionate about producing whey protein that you can trust, which is more than what your typical store-bought protein can say for itself.

Though I do not include other dairy products, I digest whey protein fine (in high-quality whey proteins, 100% of the lactose has been eliminated, thus it’s resemblance to milk is gone). Performance wise, I am on the top of the game in regards to running, lifting and requiring little recovery time. I believe that including organic whey protein in my diet has been a large part of that.

I’d recommend this protein to someone looking for a high quality, versatile protein powder to use along with a weight lifting and cardiovascular workout routine. Consuming doses of pure protein can help you recover quicker, grow muscle and keep you lean.

My Description & Thoughts on the Meal, Bars & Packets:

Amazing Grass is one of my very favorite organic health food brands. I specifically have always been a fan of their green powders. The bars and meal were new products for me to try. In many ways, the meal and bars are absolutely the ideal health fix for being on the go with a smoothie or a quick meal.

The only teeny tiny scrutiny I have is that the meal and bars are not compatible with those eating “Paleo.” That is, omitting grains from their diet. The meal and bars both contain a rice & hemp protein blend. If I had it my way, I would like to omit the rice protein and have these products containing solely hemp protein. I would recommend those two products to anyone if that were the case.

However, the quality of all of the ingredients is organic & awesome. The meal and bars all taste awesome. My favorite meal blends are the Pomegranate Mango Infusion and the Cafe Mocha. My favorite bar flavors turned out to be the Chocolate Chip Coconut and the Sweet & Savory Almond.

Now for my favorite product of this batch: the green packets. This is the product that first got me hooked on Amazing Grass products. These little packets are the perfect remedy for the busy individual who struggle’s to get a dose of greens every day. I love adding these powdered greens to Kombucha, fresh juice or water by itself. They are also great in smoothies or shaken up in a blender bottle with coconut/almond milk. My favorite flavors are the Orange Dreamsicle, Pineapple Lemongrass and Berry.

If You Do 5 Things for Your Health…

It seems to me that many individuals are seeking a healthier lifestyle, but struggle with where to start. Some questions I often hear are: Is it bad that I eat this? What should I start eating? What’s the best work out?

In my opinion and based upon my own experiences, I believe that there are 5 great places to start. There are no overnight fixes, but if you implement these small changes, then you will be on the road to forming habits that will serve your health, not hinder it.

1. Stop cold-turkey or ween yourself off of soda.

-I understand what it’s like to have a routine with what you drink (I’m a coffee drinker). That said, I also understand that some people fail at quitting soda cold-turkey. Whichever way you choose to stop drinking soda, do it. It’s worth it–and there are plenty of alternative drinks that are chock full of nutrient dense wonderment. Swap the soda for Kombucha, coconut water, or something as simple as adding lemons & limes to your water.

2. Fill your refrigerator with food you would be proud of eating.

-There’s nothing that will enable you to keep making poor food choices more than having that food around you all the time. Shop for good, whole, real food. Think: vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, plant based milk (coconut or almond milk), free range eggs & grass fed beef. Also, find a non-gmo protein powder that you like and keep that around for a quick protein smoothie. Buy organic when you can.

3. Practice the 90-10 rule.

-Nothing turns me off quicker than hearing about over-obsessed eaters who are on the verge of a full blown mental disorder because of their relationship with food. The point is not to fear food, it’s to focus on good food and eat that the majority of the time. Aim for this: 90% of the time, eat the good stuff–like I listed above. The other 10% of the time, let yourself eat dinner out at your favorite restaurant, or enjoy a glass of wine with your significant other. It’s about balance, not being neurotic about food.

4. Find a fitness routine that you have fun with.

-There’s a great quote for this one; I can’t say it better than Laird does:

“Fitness doesn’t have to be a duty. It doesn’t have to mean charts and graphs and heart rate printouts. It should be a pleasurable part of your life, and it should include things that you do purely because you enjoy them. Fun is an ingredient that people often forget in their fitness program.” -Laird Hamilton (professional surfer and world-class athlete)

I can tell you first hand that I have not been a runner since a young age because it’s a chore that I must do. I run PURELY because of how it makes me feel. I feel happy, relieved, de-stressed, empowered, strong and revitalized every time I run. Nobody else has to understand why you do what you do, or why you run 10 miles a day, or why you spend hours in the gym. The important thing is that YOU are being true to what makes you happy in fitness. So, find a routine that makes your inner light shine and do it daily. Turn on your favorite music, dance a little if you want to, and challenge your body. 🙂

5. Don’t forget to lift weights. (this elaborates on #4)

-I think this one is incredibly important because of my own experience with lifting. So, here’s a story:

I have been an athlete for as long as I can remember, training for various sports. The running aspect of my training was always easy for me–I went out and did it because, at the risk of sounding corny, it fueled my soul.

However, I knew that I “should” be lifting too.

But, I didn’t enjoy it as much. I was so stubborn. I thought, “I like to run, it’s good for me, so that’s what I’m going to do. Screw lifting.” Luckily, with age I’ve become increasingly less stubborn about fitness. I am more open to new things if I believe they will truly benefit me.

About a year ago, I started lifting. I mean, REALLY dedicating myself to lifting–making it a priority. I lift every day now, with a rest day every week or so. Despite being sore and feeling a little weak at first, I almost immediately felt stronger and more powerful. My body started to change, I was becoming a bit leaner.

But, how could I be enjoying this process? I didn’t like lifting. My point in all of this rambling is that sometimes if you step outside of your comfort zone or what you think you’ll have fun doing, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. You’ll find out that you grow to love it because it is positively impacting your body.

More Than Alive Bulk Superfoods Pack Review & Giveaway!

More Than Alive Bulk Superfoods

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

More Than Alive is an online resource for a plethora of things ranging from food storage, water filters, bulk food items, books, supplements and clothing accessories. I was elated to receive this package of goods to try. They couldn’t be a more perfect fit for my daily food intake. I make various kinds of green drink concoctions and found several of these ingredients to be perfect to add!

Several of these products are labeled as organic and some wild-crafted. Wild-crafted simply means “they have not been irradiated and are also not treated with any kind of pesticides or additives.” Essentially, they are organic without the certification saying that they are.

*In bold: info provided to me by Kate of MoreThanAlive.com

More Than Alive does such a thorough job of providing the expansive benefits and details about each of these foods, and I encourage you to read their descriptions if you are new to each product or desire a more thorough explanation of how each plant can heal the body.

Organic Barley Grass Powder

More Than Alive’s Description:

Organic Wheatgrass Powder

More Than Alive’s Description:

Wild-Crafted Spirulina

More Than Alive’s Description:

My Description & Thoughts on Barley Grass, Wheatgrass, & Spirulina:

Barley grass and Wheatgrass were new for me to try on their own, though I’m sure I have ingested them before in various pre-blended powdered greens. Spirulina has been on my radar for a few years now, as I know it to be one of the most beneficial and detoxifying of all greens. Sea greens like spirulina and different algaes are potent in their rich, healing properties, making them a real treat to have in your diet.

I get excited about merely all things green in related to plant based food. Greens are basically the most nutritionally dense food that you can consume. This makes them a dream for athletes and health conscious individuals.

I combine about a tablespoon (I don’t see it important to measure precisely, so I always eyeball it) of the barley grass, wheatgrass and spirulina in a large blender bottle full of water. I gulp down the whole thing to put a hearty, green pep in my step. It tastes just as you’d imagine it would: greeny and grassy.

Adding a teaspoon or so of any 3 of these greens is also a great way to add a boost to your smoothie. It is naturally energizing and full of nutrients so in a roundabout way it helps curb cravings. If you are new to these foods, don’t be bashful! If you add them to your smoothies, the flavor blends in nicely and is hard to taste. Fruits like berries are especially great at masking the flavor of greens.

The quality of these green powders is great and because of that, the nourishment they provide to the body is optimized.

I highly recommend this barley grass, wheatgrass and spirulina to every last one of you readers. There isn’t anyone that wouldn’t benefit from these potent green machines.

Wild-Crafted Chia Seeds

More Than Alive’s Description:

My Description & Thoughts:

If you read even one of the bullet points from above, you quickly realized that these little mighty machines are incredibly powerful. If I could recommend one “superfood” to someone trying to implement healthier foods into their life, chia seeds would be it.

I always have chia seeds in my pantry. They are amazing and applicable to me because:

-They are very versatile. They can be thrown into a smoothie, sprinkled over a salad and even used in baking to replace eggs (how awesome is that?!). The possibilities for how to use chia seeds are virtually endless!

-They are a whole food. By this, I mean they have significant amount of fat, protein and carbs–making them well rounded and balanced to ingest.

-They are a good plant based source of protein. Many think that those who eat mainly plants struggle with adequate protein intake. This is simply not true. Knowing about protein sources like chia seeds lets you get the protein your body needs through a healthful, plant source.

-They take on the flavor of what they’re with. Because of this, they blend in well in whichever way you decide to eat or drink them.

More Than Alive mentions this above in their description and I’d like to add to it: the idea that chia seeds can be soaked in water and then turned into a gel-like substance. Chia seeds are more easily and readily digested if they are soaked in water (this is also the case for all nuts and seeds). Because of this, I consume my chia seeds this way:

Fill up a large mason jar with water and add a few cups of chia seeds to the water. Put the lid on and shake the mixture so that the chia seeds clumps are all broken up. Put the jar in the fridge and let it hang out for about 30 minutes. When you pull it out, the chia and water will have come together to form the gel-like substance. Experimenting with the ratio of chia seeds to water can help you to perfect the consistency of it. When ready to eat, spoon out the gel mixture and add it to whatever you’d like. This way, you can be sure that your body is reaping all of the benefits that chia seed has to offer.

I can’t say enough how monumental discovering chia seeds was to my nutritional journey. I have even heard them called “Perfect Runner’s Fuel.” If you haven’t tried chia seeds, then I suggest you head to More Than Alive’s site and get a bag that will last you a while so you can try out this power seed in various ways.

Wild-Crafted Goji Berries

More Than Alive’s Description:

My Description & Thoughts:

When first saw these in the superfood package, I thought of my husband. These are one of Paul’s favorite healthy foods to snack on.

The benefits of these little red berries are significant and make me want to eat more! As you can see above, they are also powerful antioxidants, as are most berries.

To me, they taste very similar to raisins, but with a bit more tartness. Similar to the chia seeds, goji berries are very nutritious and versatile. I like to sprinkle these on top of smoothies, throw into a bowl of fruit, or just eat by themselves! They are a great snack to have on hand for a hike or outdoor trek. You could even make your trail mix with these as your starting point.

If you like raisins, then you will surely love goji berries. I recommend that we trade the raisans and mix it up! Trying new, more nutritious foods can help you fall in love with new flavors.

*These complimentary products have been generously provided to me for the purpose of trying them in order to write a review on my experience.

I will choose 2 winners who will receive an assorted bundle of super foods similar to the ones pictured at the top of this post. More than Alive will substitute another item for the goji berries, as they are temporarily out of stock. This selection of goodies is an absolute jackpot! I’m excited for all of you.
