My Experience:

Measuring food was a foreign concept to me not long ago, but I gained an interest in it after learning more about how consuming certain macronutrient ratios may be able to maximize health and performance during workouts.

I came across this opportunity to try out an Eat Smart Scale and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I’m new to using scales (thus, I don’t have much to compare it to), but I wouldn’t see a need to ever get a different scale. This one seems to do an excellent job and is easy to store (we keep it on top of our microwave).

I like that could can measure in various ways like grams, ounces or pounds. My routine has been to the scale on with the bowl I’m using already on it, that way the scale is at zero with an empty bowl on top (it doesn’t weight the bowl this way).

I’m excited to have this fancy tool in our kitchen and have found it useful espescially for measuring out fat servings (like nuts) as well as measuring ground coffee for consistent brewing. If you do any kind of measuring in your kitchen on a regular basis, this is definitely worth having.

Big Berkey Water Filter System Review

Big Berkey Water Filter Review

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

About Berkey:

This powerful water filter purifies both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. Perfect for everyday use, outdoor activities and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available.

The versatile Big Berkey Water Filter removes viruses, pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It also reduces rust, silt, sediment, foul taste and odors and unhealthy minerals such as lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove red food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.

Constructed of highly polished 304 stainless steel, the system comes complete with two purification elements and utilizes the latest technological advances. This water filter has a storage capacity of about 2.25 gallons (8.5 liters) and when in use it stands 19.25″ in height with a diameter of 8.5″. The upper chamber nests within the lower chamber for transport and stands only 13″ in height.

Configured with two Black Berkey™ Purification Elements the system will purify up to 3 1/2 Gallons (13.3 liters) per hour*. This system can be expanded to use four purification elements and is capable of purifying up to 7 Gallons (26.5 liters) per hour*.

*Flow rate calculated with upper chamber full to top. Flow rate decreases as water level declines.

Big Berkey Water Filter Removes:

The powerful Black Berkey™ purification elements also remove or reduce viruses, pathogenic bacteria, cysts, parasites, harmful or unwanted chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, VOCs, detergents, organic solvents, trihalomethanes, cloudiness, silt, sediment, heavy metals, foul tastes and odors, yet they leave in the healthful and beneficial minerals that your body needs.

Why a Berkey Filter?

The water my family and I drink has always been in the forefront of my mind and at the top of my priority list in regards to health. I do not go the bottled water route for a few reasons:

1. Bottled water is typically bottled in questionable plastic (made in large amounts, often containing BPA and other potentially other harmful substances).

2. Bottled water is not cost efficient! Investing in a filter for your home will ultimately save you money and is more convenient, to boot.

3. The water in bottled water sits in that same container for potentially months before it is actually consumed. This means that whatever that plastic is made of is having a gigantic window of time to leach into the water.

Those are a few reasons that made me choose a Big Berkey for my family’s drinking water supply. Berkey also offers fluoride filters (without getting into an elaborate discussion about fluoride–I’ll just say I avoid it).

Benefits of Using a Berkey:

-Takes heavy metals out of our water

-heavy metals cause a multitude of health defects including hormone disruption,                 brain fog and chronic inflammation)

-Strips contaminants from water so you don’t ingest them

-As scary as it sounds: parasites, pharmaceuticals, environmental pollutants and                 mold can all be present in our water supply. Each of those will impact your health             negatively, especially through daily exposure through drinking water.

-You’ll experience increased health overall

-I notices that my skin is clearer, I sleep better, my energy levels are higher and my            tests came back very low for toxic contamination in my system.

This filter sits in our kitchen and is our source of water for drinking, cooking, making coffee, filling up our dog’s water bowl–you name it. I would say that we use quite a bit of water, as I’m frequently making almond milk, brewing coffee, making smoothies, filling up blender bottles–which all require water from that filter. We keep a big pitcher next to the Berkey for a quick fill up. We usually have to refill the filtering tank every 1-2 days. It’s not inconvenient, and only takes a few minutes a day. All in all, we love our Berkey filter and are happy to have it as a staple in our daily routine.

I highly recommend this filter to anyone–especially families looking for a non-contaminated source of water. This size works for us, but Berkey also makes them bigger and also smaller (more portable) with the same thorough filtering. The filters don’t need to be replaced until they’ve filtered 3,000 gallons of water, or 6,000 gallons for two filter elements (we have two)–for us I believe it will end up being every 3 years.

The Honest Kitchen Dog Food Review

The Honest Kitchen Dog Food

Overall Rating: 4 Stars5 Stars

In our house, filling our kitchen with organic food & products is something that we make a priority. This is also the case for how we feed our black labrador, Kona. Just like us humans, she will not reach her potential health-wise if she does not eat good food. We enjoy and feel good about feeding her well, and it shows! She is an energetic and beautiful almost 8-month old puppy.

The Honest Company is one of the few brands of dog food that I have felt confident in feeding Kona. They appear to truly use great ingredients in their products. The Honest Kitchen provides this information regarding ingredients on their website:

“We taste every single ingredient that goes into our foods to make sure it’s just right

We’re proud of every ingredient we source for our natural pet food. We choose many ingredients from as close to home as possible, to help reduce our carbon paw print. We also choose ingredients from their native lands around the world and select vendors based on the quality of their ingredients, not cost.

All our dog and cat foods are 100% human-grade and are held to exactly the same quality standards as the food you feed to your human family.

  • We never buy GMO or genetically engineered produce.
  • Several of our ingredients are certified organic and we’re working to add more organic ingredients whenever we can.
  • We require certification to verify that every lot of raw ingredients we buy has been tested clear of salmonella, E-coli, listeria, lead, arsenic, mercury, melamine, yeast and mold & pesticide residues, before it’s even allowed inside our plant.”

Here are the products we tried with her:

My Description & Thoughts:

Kona did not seem to differentiate in between the Embark, Thrive and Love dog food blends, as she gobbled up all of them. As dog owners, my husband and I can feel good about this because of the great ingredients.

All 3 of these blends come in powder form, as it is dehydrated form. To serve it to Kona, I sprinkle a half serving onto the dry food I feed her along with a few tablespoons (approximately) of water, which helps make The Honest Kitchen food more digestible for her. The Honest Kitchen provides more description of how they recommend you feed their food to your dog, as well.

I would rate these dog foods 4.5 stars–I admire their usage of some certified organic ingredients and their guarantee to never buy GMO ingredients. They are striving to include more and more organic ingredients and when that day comes, I won’t hesitate to give this food a flat-out 5 star rating. In comparison to other common store-bought dog foods, this product line is light years ahead–there is merely no comparison. I recommend this very much to pet owners who are looking for one of the best natural dog food lines available, as this is one of a few brands that is worth the money.
