So…What am I Supposed to Eat?

When I’m asked for help in regards to nutrition and/or exercise, I have always feared sounding like a know-it-all. Being that way doesn’t feel natural to me. But I also get an overwhelming amount of questions like, “so, what am I supposed to eat?”

Speaking from experience and simply explaining how I do things feels incredibly natural, though. That slight changing of gears (in my mindset & approach) in helping others become the healthiest version of themselves has been huge.

Something I’ve witnessed with folks that are looking to become healthier, lose weight, regain vitality &/or boost energy is….

an overwhelming sense of paralysis due to fear & information overload in regards to food.

What’s good for you? What’s not? But, that website said I shouldn’t eat this? So, should I? Why am I breaking out? Is that my body detoxing? Why am I not losing weight? Do I need to go paleo, vegan, gluten free, dairy free blah, blah, blah, blah? Is low fat good? Or should I limit sugar? What about eating frequently throughout the day? Snacks? Eating late? How much protein do I need? Do I need to buy organic food? What’s the big deal about raw food?

Holy cow.

That’s what I mean. Can you say: Oh-ver-load!

Recent discussions in the food world, especially in healthy-minded communities have reached an all-time high–or at least it seems that way. Perhaps, I’m just more aware of it now because I am completely submerged in this world.

Like ANYTHING else in life. I find that the solution is simple & concise:

Ditch rules. Think: Eat to feel good.

Now, I get that many brains will completely come unwired to that idea. There has to be more to it, many must think. Well, I can break it down a little bit farther for those brains. Here are some things I keep in mind & how I would describe my daily eating choices (I feel the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life)…

27867206_2110137042337728_4381541411246716320_n

How I do it:

-Loads of: plants, superfoods, alkaline-forming foods

-Look to healthy fats & protein for fuel (limit refined sugar–it’s more of a cheap thrill. Too much promotes internal acidity. FRUIT is not in this category. Eat your fruit!)

-When grocery shopping, think: organic, raw, fresh.

-Drink lots of water. Basically as much as you can stand. Water helps everything in your body operate more optimally.

-Appreciate food again. Get excited to eat GOOD FOR YOU food. Don’t rush everything. Savor the subtle flavors of everything.

You might be thinking….so what about the dietary restrictions?

I find that (life is like this, too) when I focus my energy on all of those good things going into my body, I don’t have room for the extra junk. Thus, foods like processed grains, dairy, junk food, soda, other miscellaneous garbage food don’t find their way into my daily nutrition often because there’s no room for them. Does that make sense?

It’s like overwhelming your body with “positive,” good foods (like you overwhelm your mind with postitive thoughts to stay happy), so much so, that you don’t leave any room for the negative stuff that sucks the life out of you. You see, it’s all connected. It’s not diet is one isolated aspect & mindset is another isolated aspect of you. The same mantras can & do apply to every facet of your well being. Just apply them and life just becomes easier. You become healthier. That fog lifts. You end up looking in the mirror one day and feeling like you are becoming little Jesica again. Young, spry, capable, healthful without a care in the world. Well, maybe that’s just me. But MAN, it’s an incredible feeling–hard to describe really. AND it all starts with how you fuel your body and your mentality going into it.

My Thoughts:

If you want lots of yummy flavor & fuel that you can feel pretty good about eating, Nugo’s got it. These bars are chock full of organic ingredients. Talk about a GIANT leap up from your typical snack bar.

If I had to pick one, the double dark chocolate bar takes the cake in regards to overall taste & enjoyment. I love the health boosting qualities of chocolate (when in its pure form & without additives)

Here are a few tweaks I would make with these bars:

-Lower sugar content

-More raw ingredients (like raw cacao)

-Less or no use of soy

-Specificity on what “natural flavors” are

Here is what these bars have that many bars do not:

-A laundry list of organic ingredients (these are Certified Organic bars)

-All non-gmo ingredients

-A decent macro ratio (5g fat/26g carbs/10g protein)

In my pantry, I see these bars as a healthy treat/snack for our 6 year old and a candy bar replacement for me. I like to keep my sugar intake at bay, thus, I won’t be eating several of these a day. However, a big bravo for the use of organic ingredients. I find myself looking for more raw, though! I recommend them to someone looking to make a healthier swap in their junky-snack routine, one that will provide them with fat, carbs & protein.

Products I Tried:

Super Protein

About:

“As you may have seen on the recent Doctor Oz Show, heavy metals have been discovered in many sources of plant based protein. Although our Protein 2.0, made with rice protein, already adheres to and exceeds industry standards for heavy metal limits, we were determined to create a new product that would turn out to be the cleanest, purest form of nutrition-rich vegan protein available.

We set out with a few main goals in mind…
1. Find alternative sources of vegan protein far exceeding industry standards.
2. Source only immaculate ingredients from unpolluted and pristine ends of Earth.
3. Keep ingredients to a minimum with no unnecessary additives or fillers.

Thus was born Boku in the Buff. No fillers. No flavorings. No additives.
Just 3 stellar proteins coming together to create a  complete protein that’s headed straight to your cells in minutes.

  • Essential Amino Acids
  • No Rice Formula
  • Wheat, Gluten, Soy and Dairy Free
  • Easy to Digest
  • Antioxidants & Phytonutrients
  • Hypoallergenic

Super Golden Berries

About:

“These modest little health warriors go by many aliases; such as Inca Berries, Cape Gooseberries and Ground Cherries but we think the name Golden Berries defers them the shining respect they deserve.
An orangey color, they have a chewy tartness that’ll make you suck your cheeks in and immediately impel you to eat more, and don’t let any food guilt stop you because these guys are on your side!

Unlike most dried fruit they’re low GI so you’re not packing away a high volume of sneaky calories in a small package as with, for example, raisins.

They’re laden with anti-inflammatory bioflavonoids and keep the early part of the alphabet busy with plenty of Vitamins A and C.

They’re so full of antioxidants they’d stop copper going green, well perhaps not but they’d knock any free radicals out of your ball park.
As we mentioned they’re very more-ish and make a great guilt-free health-boosting snack to have in the store cupboard. Stock up on them and enjoy.

  • Contains naturally formed Vitamin C
  • High in Vitamin A
  • Deliciously sweet & tangy
  • Good source of fiber
  • Use in smoothies, trail mix, or snack straight from the bag!”

Super Shrooms

About:

“We are BIG FANS of specialty mushrooms for many reasons! We encourage you to read through each individual ingredient, and you will quickly discover why we LOVE THEM!  Specialty Mushrooms have been used and cherished by many civilization’s for thousands of years.

We  have worked closely with our farmer to put together a special proprietary blend of  “20″  of the most potent, organic specialty mushrooms that are grown and cultivated in the USA.  The magic in the mushroom comes from the thousands of compounds, constituents; all of which are extremely beneficial to our health! Inside the cell walls of mushrooms, there are carbohydrate molecules called Polysaccharides, more specifically, Beta-Glucans.  The 1,3 – Beta Glucans are tightly bound to the cell walls and have a low degree of bio-availability in a raw mushroom.  To overcome this and increase the bio-availability of the constituents , all our mushrooms undergo a steam extraction process that makes the nutrients more bio-available than hot water extraction. This process breaks down the cell wall to release the Beta Glucans. Beta-Glucans have been widely studied and tested, and it is believed that these polysaccharides are able to stimulate and enhance our immune system.

  • Used by Chinese, Romans, and Egyptians
  • Proprietary blend of 20  specialty mushrooms
  • Sustainably grown in the USA – Nothing imported
  • Add to smoothies, applesauce, or use to make tea.”

Super Cacao Nibs

About:

  • “Certified Organic
  • Single Origin
  • Fairly traded Raw Cacao Nibs from Satipo (Cooperative Farmed) in the Peruvian Amazon.”

Super Maca

About:

“Maca has been cultivated & harvested & used by the Inca civilization for centuries.  Its a very  important traditional food that has sustained this culture with food and medicine in South America   for over 2,000 years . Maca is a root vegetable  that resembles a small turnip grown at an elevation of approx. 13,000 feet ( 2.5 miles) above sea level.   Maca grows in conditions where no other crop can survive the  extreme temperatures, & high winds .   It is well known for its ability to help enhance strength and endurance; in fact, Incan warriors would often consume maca before long journeys and battles. Boku Super Maca  is a micro-pulverized, highly absorbable, 4:1 concentration of the most important elements in maca — a little goes a long way!  It also contains less starch than standard maca, making it ideal for those with difficulty digesting certain types of vegetables.

  • Ancient source of nourishment & healing
  • Revered health secret of ancient tribes
  • Adds delicious depth to smoothies & shakes
  • Promotes natural regulation of moods.”

My Thoughts:

Boku Superfoods REALLY excites me! This expansive range of superfood products is very unique and the quality of these products is incredible. I loved reading Lynn’s story and hearing about the passion behind these products.

This brand is one of two that I can think of that offer certified organic superfoods quite like these. There are many brands out there cranking out “superfoods,” but often times they aren’t organic and they don’t offer many different products.

Perfect example: I’ve never been able to get my hands on anything like Super Shrooms. Mushrooms are a medicinal plant that is not often utilized–so I loved being able to sample some of that robust and powerful powder.

I can see myself stocking up on more of this protein. I like to alternate using different types of proteins–whey, hemp and other plant based proteins. This is surely one of the very best plant-based proteins I’ve used.

I like adding the super maca, super shrooms and super food into smoothies. The fruit and milk mask the flavors; so I’m getting the benefits of these superfoods without having them be the predominant flavor. I love maca, especially, for its hormone balancing and endocrine health benefits.

The cacao nibs and golden berries make the perfect little nutrient packed snack. Theres something to be said about having a convenient. healthy and organic snack that you can carry around anywhere with you.

I’m so appreciative to have learned about and tried Boku superfoods. They are very worthy of my “Brands I Love” page and are now on it!

My Thoughts:

Delicious and unique, these chips were a treat to try for my taste buds. The chocolate and kettle corn flavors were my favorite. After thoroughly going through their website, I realized that Food Should Taste Good makes gobs of different kinds of chips! I only tried four of them. There are a ton more–so there’s likely a flavor to suit anyone.

Quality-wise, as you can see from these ingredient lists, these chips are not tops. They are indeed non-gmo, but only one of these flavors contains an ingredient that is listed as organic. Non-GMO is a step in the right direction, but especially when it comes to products that have corn as the main ingredient (one of the most heavily pesticide coated produce item), I make sure to buy organic as much as possible.

I appreciate the diversity of this brand, but don’t see myself looking to them for my organic, go-to chip. I will say, if you walk into your local grocery store and scrutinize their chip section, they are merely all GMO-ridden (unless you are in a natural health food store). Since Food Should Taste Good does not use GMO ingredients, they are above average, but will not be a staple in my pantry until they take another step up the ladder to include mostly organic ingredients.

Zing Bars Review

Zing Bars

Overall Rating: images

About Zing:

“It all started innocently enough. As practicing nutritionists, we simply wanted to find a good nutrition bar that we could recommend to our patients. Something consistent with our professional training and experience.

We frequently recommend hummus-and-carrots, peanut-butter-and-celery or a host of similar mid-afternoon mini-meals. But these don’t address convenience, portability and the on-the-go requirements of real life. Then there’s the problem that not everyone likes these suggestions. Sometimes the pleasure of a tasty, satisfying snack just has to be factored in.

It presents a challenge for anyone in the nutrition business: our recommendations have to taste good enough to eat because people want to, not because they have to. It can’t work if they won’t eat it, and they won’t eat it if they don’t like it. That’s scientific too.

We looked. We looked hard. But there just weren’t any convenient snacks that fit our requirements. If a bar was nutritionally balanced, it came up short on taste (often really short). If a bar tasted good, it was low in protein and fiber, or full of artificial ingredients, unhealthy fats and empty calories. We were not after a candy bar. There were plenty of those, even among the so-called ”energy” bars.

So we decided to create our own nutrition bar. A real nutrition bar. Our take on the perfect snack.

A bar that included everything we wanted, and excluded everything we didn’t. All natural. Only food ingredients. A healthy balance—and the right types—of carbohydrates, protein and beneficial fats. No artificial sweeteners, colors or preservatives. No trans fats. No synthetic vitamins. No allergy-aggravating gluten, wheat or soy protein. And while we were at it, no corn or corn sweeteners, fast becoming another widespread allergen and metabolism wrecker.

But at the same time, and just as important, it had to taste not just good, but surprisingly good. Amazingly good. Good enough to not only eat, but enjoy.

In short, a nutrition bar that moves forward to the basics. A bar that everyone—nutritionists, healthcare professionals, parents and kids—would actually love to eat, even before thinking about nutrition. But it would have that, too, right from nutritionists.”

My Thoughts:

These bars are just plain DELICIOUS. They taste like a dessert made with the best ingredients. I see Zing Bars really being a favorite to those that have never been a fan of nutrition bars before. I truly could not get enough of these bars and was very eager to try each new flavor–which is not always the case. Some bars are chalky and not appealing. Zing Bars are moist, decadent, rich with flavor, and they taste like they contain real food ingredients–because they do.

These bars boast so many ingredients that I love and aim to incorporate into my daily diet, like almonds, dark chocolate, whey protein and agave syrup. A few of the bars I tried contain whey protein and a few of them contain rice protein concentrate. Ingredient-preference-wise, I would rather have the whey protein in the bar I’m eating, as I typically steer away from grains and protein derived from them. I could also do without the brown rice syrup and flour in a few of the bars. Other than that, I love what I see in these ingredient lists.

I would recommend these bars to anyone–especially those who are normally skeptical of health food bars. They will suit so many different diets and satisfy so many taste buds.
