Planetbox Eco-Friendly Food Containers Review

This is a review + summary of my experience with Planetbox eco-friendly, sustainable lunch boxes and portable food containers.

I’ve always been on the look out for reusable, sturdy food storage options that don’t require me to use disposable plastic bags and give me the freedom to tote food/drinks around with me effortlessly. Planetbox totally fits this bill and then some.

About Planetbox:

  • Easy: PlanetBox will serve as your guide for what and how much to pack. We’ve done the thinking for you. And now your morning routine just got a whole lot easier.
  • Safe: We take “non-toxic, non-leaching, safe from BPA, phthalates, and lead” very seriously – in fact, it’s why we designed PlanetBox! We don’t think you will find safer products on the market than ours.
  • Cost Effective: Why should you pay this much for a lunchbox? Because it’s cheaper to buy food in bulk and pack your own meal. Because your health is worth it. And because it’s an investment your family will use every single day for many years to come – over its lifetime, it will pay off in spades.
  • Great Design: When something actually works well, it makes all the difference. We spent years studying and living how people use lunchboxes. We thoroughly thought through all the details, so you and your kids get the joy and ease of using a superbly designed product.
  • Enjoyable: Think packing lunch is a dreaded chore? Our innovative lunchboxes actually make packing lunch fun and enjoyable – for your kids and yourself!
  • Eco: PlanetBox lunches create a whole lot less trash, which should help you sleep better knowing you’re doing your part to help the planet for future generations.
  • Built to Last: This isn’t your childhood flimsy tin lunchbox. Our high quality stainless steel is warrantied for 5 years, and has been known to survive getting thrown off the school bus (not that we recommend that).
  • Healthy: Forget to pack some veggies? The empty compartment will remind you. Concerned about overeating? That won’t happen – PlanetBox is designed to hold sensible portions. So eat a rainbow of foods, and enjoy.
  • Stress-Free Cleanup: Dishwasher safe? Heck yeah. Peanut butter left for a week? No problem – our stainless steel doesn’t retain yucky food odors or stains like those unfortunate plastic containers do.
  • Customizable: Whether you’re a rock star, a paleontologist, or a flower child, we’ve got a magnet set for you. And when you decide to become an astronaut or fairy lover next year, just change your magnets and you’ve got a fresh new lunchbox to suit your style.

Here are the products I’m using:

Tall Dipper (dip/sauce container)

Tank (snack container)

Launch (Lunch box) with the Rocket Color Bag and Lotus Magnets

planetbox2

I am just so pleased with how easy my Planetbox is to pack, how it has pockets on the outside of the carrying bag (perfect for a La Croix or even the Tank snack container), how cool it looks, how many compliments I get on it, how easy it is to clean, how it fits a hefty sized meal and how it makes me feel like I’m doing something small + good for the planet.

The only thing I’ve run into is that I had trouble with leakage when I put a tomato sauce on top of some lentil noodle inside my Launch box. It seeped out the side. To prevent it the next time, I just put the sauce in the Tall Dipper instead. Worked well that way!

I’ve been a fan of Essential Living Foods for a while now. They are one of a few different brands I look to most often for all of my organic & raw superfoods. Their products range from cacao powder to quinoa bars to superfood blends formulated for weight loss. I love trying their products and am always intrigued by how their concoct their blends. You can read my thoughts on the cacao powder, “keenwah” bars, immune formula & athletic fuel mixes here:

This means we can guarantee the quality of the superfoods you’re putting in your body, and we can do it more sustainably.

My Thoughts:

I truly feel fortunate to know about an overflowing-handful of brands who have created an expansive line of organic, raw superfood products. (You may have gleaned that I am a superfood fanatic, if you regularly follow ROO). Superfoods for the win! They are the one thing (alongside probiotics) that I would suggest adding to your diet to take your health to the next level.

Essential Living Foods is one of these brands that I am delighted to work with. The variety of raw, organic products and superfood blends they provide created blows me away.

Here’s where the highly-ingredient-driven-discerning consumer comes out of me (and the explanation for 4.5 stars, instead of 5). I noticed in the mixes that not all of the ingredients are raw. Here’s the thing–I REALLY, really, really value a brand who abides by “when you know better, do better.” Thus, in this case–raw is obviously something that’s valued, so why not make every last ingredient raw? Raw guarantees optimum nutriton–so to me, it’s huge. I understand the complexity of sourcing ingredients and how it’s very hard to solidify a supply chain of certain raw materials that are organic, however, I demand the best for my body. When I see that some ingredients are raw and some are not, it just leaves me wanting a product that’s 100% organic & raw.

Okay–got that out of the way. Again, I have a VERY discerning eye for ingredients. These products are about 348587 times better than 99% of every other supplement you’ll find. But, I find it to be my duty to be frank and divulge all thoughts to you guys.

I am actually really enthused about these products. They are pretty close to being full-blown awesome. I love what they’ve done with Diet Support product. They’ve harnessed the metabolism boosting benefits of green tea, green coffee, ginger and paired them with antioxidant-rife cacao. Great product idea!

The Wild Protein (if entirely raw) would be an absolute rockstar product. I am so excited that they added spirulina, moringa (both combatting malnutrition) along with burdock root & milk thistle (strong liver detoxifiers) to the superpowered hemp protein base. Totally awesome.

The Superfood Smoothie Mix is a good one–it’s brown rice protein combined with various superfruit powders (some raw, some not–all organic). I add about a tablespoon to my shakes/smoothies for an added boost of antioxidants and natural energy.

You get to try some too, as Essential Living Foods is offering free supplement sticks to anyone who signs up to their email list.

Garden of Life Summit Rundown: Probiotics + Protein + Organic Farming

11265569_10105128153201759_8856359909073650562_n

The notion of possibly summarizing my entire weekend at the Garden of Life headquarters is an incredibly overwhelming task. There are SO many ideals that were brought to my attention, many that were even more cemented in my thinking, and a ton of new ideals that I’ve been inspired to ponder. To sum up my general emotion triggered by being a part of this summit, I left Palm Beach feeling:

Inspired. Driven. Hyped on supporting organic. Enthusiastic. Invigorated. Energized. Healthy.

I ate so much good (both good tasting and good for me!) foods while I was there, I truly did leave feeling superpowered. I drank my weight in local, green juice, ate a plentiful amount of locally-caught seafood and even dined at a farm-to-table restaurant.

In regards to the information, knowledge and inspiration that I acquired, here are the main take-aways that I grasped from this weekend that I am applying and taking into my everyday life.

Before I get into all of the details, I’ll just add that I am a FEELER. By that, I mean that I am largely influenced by how things make me feel–both as a result of the information I hear and how I feel when using a product. Thus, a lot of these tidbits from the summit really resonated with me, or I related strongly to because I have experienced the protein for myself. Scientific backup is great (many desire solely that), and Garden of Life has that to back up their products, but, I am an advocate for these products because I have witnessed first hand the impact that they have had on my health. I feel like the best version of Jesica when I am eating loads of organic, raw, plant based foods. This kind of supplementation is a gigantic part of that. I consider each of the Garden of Life products to be beyond “just a supplement,” because the quality is supreme and they are whole food-based, they are in a league of their own.

I have bolded some of my favorite parts!

1. “Probiotics” is not JUST a buzz word. Your body NEEDS them to function optimally.

-The standard American diet, pharmaceutical drugs, etc. have diminished our bodies’ good bacteria population in the gut. The effect on human health is profound.

-Supplementing the diet with probiotics is key is returning this good bacteria population back to a point where the digestive system can assimilate, absorb and process nutrients as it’s supposed to.

-“At Garden of Life, we are greens, we are probiotics. It’s who are are.” -Sherri Gunn, Garden of Life.

-“So much more can be done with health & prevention.” -Dawn Jarvis, Garden of Life.

-There are trillions of microbial organisms in your body. You help the good microbes thrive by eating a rich, whole food based diet that limits processed foods.

-A natural, whole food diet without pesticides, GMOs helps heal the gut.

-Good bacteria in the gut helps protect against the bad bacteria. So, we need the good bacteria.

-Digestive health is responsible for absorption of all of the food we eat, which contributes to our overall vitality. That’s why gut health is such a focus.

2. Supporting organic is, indeed, so very important.

-“I do this because it means a lot.” -Jeff Brams, Garden of Life

-Traceability, sourcing, transparency and sustainability are so important in acquiring raw materials  ingredients.

-Supporting organic, family farms drives economic change. “This is the mission.” – Jeff Brams, Garden of Life

-GoL elevates the success of villages in Africa by sourcing from them.

-Biodynamic farming is utilized and valued. You must farm the soil, not the plants. It’s about the “symphony of the soil.”

3. Protein. Why so important?

-Your entire body requires protein to maintain itself, rebuild, repair and build.

-Whole food supplements are faster and more effective because they are assimilated like real food.

-Protein helps build muscle–then muscle helps clean sugar out of your system.

-Protein lowers ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger.

-Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) don’t have to go thru the liver. They go straight to the muscle. This reduces lactic acid, aids recovery.

-Protein isolates are not the same as whole food based proteins because they cause the blood sugar to rise.

-“High quality protein has a satiating effect on the body.”-Jeff Brams, Garden of Life.

-“Protein is the original energy drink–it just provides energy through a different mechanism.” -Jeff Brams, Garden of Life

-Assaults to digestive tract causes inability to absorb protein (processed foods, pharmaceutical drugs, gluten, excess sugar, lack of good bacteria in the gut)

4. Tidbits on Garden of Life Proteins

Organic Plant Protein (OPP) created because of “grain free” demand, because customers want taste & texture. Contains more fermented ingredients (& nutrients due to superfood content), whereas GoL’s Raw Protein contains more sprouted. Fermented & sprouted ingredients are more easily digested than an unprepped seed.

-Unprepped seeds do not want to be digested. They want to be transported and deposited in a new home. Nature’s example: squirrels plant acorns, let them sprout and then eat them.

-Variety of proteins in one blend makes it work–gives you a complete amino acid chain.

Organic Plant Protein contains the superfoods baobab (acts as a prebiotic) & moringa (combats malnutrition).

Raw Meal has more protein & acts as a meal replacement, with significant amounts of fat, carbs and protein. Contains high nutrient content, thus less cravings and helps you feel fuller longer.

Raw Fit contains Fucothin (green coffee bean extract) which regulates and balances blood sugar.

-Adding power packed protein & superfood blends like these to your diet helps proliferate good microbes in your body.

5. Inflammation

-“The cornerstone of all disease is inflammation.” -Dawn Jarvis, Garden of Life

-Sugar encourages inflammation.

-Keep out artificial sweeteners that are causing oxidative stress.

6. Ingredients

-“We are fanatical about ingredients.” -Dawn Jarvis, Garden of Life

-14 strains of probiotics makeup GoL probiotics products

-Made cold, shipped cold

-Dawn Jarvis has an incredible resume with experience being a nutritionist for Wimbledon, yet one of my favorite quotes of her lecture is: “We use the organic stuff.”

-A little “did you know” from this weekend…”Flamingos are pink because of the large amount of antioxidants that they consume.”

So…What am I Supposed to Eat?

When I’m asked for help in regards to nutrition and/or exercise, I have always feared sounding like a know-it-all. Being that way doesn’t feel natural to me. But I also get an overwhelming amount of questions like, “so, what am I supposed to eat?”

Speaking from experience and simply explaining how I do things feels incredibly natural, though. That slight changing of gears (in my mindset & approach) in helping others become the healthiest version of themselves has been huge.

Something I’ve witnessed with folks that are looking to become healthier, lose weight, regain vitality &/or boost energy is….

an overwhelming sense of paralysis due to fear & information overload in regards to food.

What’s good for you? What’s not? But, that website said I shouldn’t eat this? So, should I? Why am I breaking out? Is that my body detoxing? Why am I not losing weight? Do I need to go paleo, vegan, gluten free, dairy free blah, blah, blah, blah? Is low fat good? Or should I limit sugar? What about eating frequently throughout the day? Snacks? Eating late? How much protein do I need? Do I need to buy organic food? What’s the big deal about raw food?

Holy cow.

That’s what I mean. Can you say: Oh-ver-load!

Recent discussions in the food world, especially in healthy-minded communities have reached an all-time high–or at least it seems that way. Perhaps, I’m just more aware of it now because I am completely submerged in this world.

Like ANYTHING else in life. I find that the solution is simple & concise:

Ditch rules. Think: Eat to feel good.

Now, I get that many brains will completely come unwired to that idea. There has to be more to it, many must think. Well, I can break it down a little bit farther for those brains. Here are some things I keep in mind & how I would describe my daily eating choices (I feel the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life)…

27867206_2110137042337728_4381541411246716320_n

How I do it:

-Loads of: plants, superfoods, alkaline-forming foods

-Look to healthy fats & protein for fuel (limit refined sugar–it’s more of a cheap thrill. Too much promotes internal acidity. FRUIT is not in this category. Eat your fruit!)

-When grocery shopping, think: organic, raw, fresh.

-Drink lots of water. Basically as much as you can stand. Water helps everything in your body operate more optimally.

-Appreciate food again. Get excited to eat GOOD FOR YOU food. Don’t rush everything. Savor the subtle flavors of everything.

You might be thinking….so what about the dietary restrictions?

I find that (life is like this, too) when I focus my energy on all of those good things going into my body, I don’t have room for the extra junk. Thus, foods like processed grains, dairy, junk food, soda, other miscellaneous garbage food don’t find their way into my daily nutrition often because there’s no room for them. Does that make sense?

It’s like overwhelming your body with “positive,” good foods (like you overwhelm your mind with postitive thoughts to stay happy), so much so, that you don’t leave any room for the negative stuff that sucks the life out of you. You see, it’s all connected. It’s not diet is one isolated aspect & mindset is another isolated aspect of you. The same mantras can & do apply to every facet of your well being. Just apply them and life just becomes easier. You become healthier. That fog lifts. You end up looking in the mirror one day and feeling like you are becoming little Jesica again. Young, spry, capable, healthful without a care in the world. Well, maybe that’s just me. But MAN, it’s an incredible feeling–hard to describe really. AND it all starts with how you fuel your body and your mentality going into it.
