How to Reduce Skin Redness on Your Face

Skincare seems to be a topic that comes up over and over for me, even though my focus with content is often more about nutrition, fitness and positivity–and I get it!

Keeping my facial complexion looking healthy, clear and vibrant has been a focus of mine since I first got my monthly cycle (age 12). For years I struggled with cystic acne (you can read all about that experience and what helped me here). But in the last 5 years, I have been acne-free (HECK YEAH MAN) and that’s been a liberating feeling.

What’s left on my skin present-day is some acne-scarring and occasional cheek redness that fluctuates with my time of the month, my diet, my sleep quality, my alcohol intake and overall stress levels. It took me a long time to learn that health in general (your skin is a reflection of what’s going on inside your body) is TRULY affected by every aspect of your human experience.

Emotional State’s Impact on Skin

This includes your emotions, beliefs, thoughts, stress, unhealed trauma, skincare ingredients, diet quality, etc. Might seem totally quacky that your beliefs about yourself can manifest themselves elsewhere in your body. You don’t have to take my word for it. There’s heaps of science and anecdotal info to reinforce this, just check out the Heal Documentary.

You can’t neglect any aspect of that and expect to be perfectly healthy. Also–perfectionism won’t necessarily serve you either. The key is to GAIN MORE AWARENESS surrounding your thoughts, choices and habits.

Okay, okay, so back to skin redness. Most people are probably looking for a quick fix. Been there! Though healing your skin doesn’t happen overnight, there are some things you can do now that will immediately start helping you.

Your Skin is Largely Your Diet

Multiple things to point out here:

-When your body is not effectively eliminating (kidneys, liver, etc.), it does so through your skin

-If your diet is crappy and full of processed, inflammatory foods, your skin is going to reflect that

-Drinking a lot of water goes a long way! (I use this Berkey Filter for all my drinking water)

-Cutting out (or minimizing) common inflammatory foods can help a whole bunch. Gluten, dairy, soy, corn, egg (for some people) and highly processed oils would all fall into this category.

Makeup Wearers, Clean it Up!

Redness is an indicator that inflammation is happening, which is your body’s response to damage or imbalance. Wearing toxic makeup is like putting gasoline on that fire. The sooner you can swap out your current drug-store foundations, concealers, etc., the sooner your skin will have a chance to get on the healing train.

My personal favorites are made by a company called Mineral Fusion. Not only are they accessible (you can buy them online and in your local Whole Foods, Sprouts, or other health food store, but they are EWG Verified (Environment Working Group), an organization that reveals information on the toxicity of many makeup/skincare/food brands. They even have an app. It’s a great resource for looking up different products you currently use or are considering purchasing.

The two most important ones (since they go directly onto your skin) that I would swap to are their Pressed Powder Foundation and their Concealer Powder if you’re looking for more natural coverage.

There have been a few times when traveling that I chose to use other makeup because I didn’t have my trusty clean options on hand. I noticed that my skin was more red, irritated, slightly itchy and just unhappy when I took my makeup off each night). Those instances were a good reminder that the quality of your makeup does matter.

Keep Your Facial Hygiene Pure

Just like makeup, most generic skincare cleansers, toners and moisturizers are rife with chemicals, preservatives and skin irritants. Luckily, there are a lot of cool brands out there that have created clean, organic, nourishing  skin care products that are sure to help you reduce your facial redness.

A few of my staple favorites are Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Bar Soap and Now Foods Jojoba Oil.

Doesn’t Non-Toxic Makeup & Skincare Cost More?

Here’s the thing, if you’ve ever shopped for makeup or perfume at a department store like Macy’s, Dillard’s, Saks, etc., you’ve probably noticed that it’s SO expensive. The biggest kicker is that the ingredients in those products are absolute dog crap. Seriously. You can’t even pronounce them. They’re not clean, they’re toxic and they don’t improve the true health of your skin. It’s actually amazing to me that places like that still sell. *steps off soap box*

That said, non-toxic skincare when compared to those options is actually significantly cheaper AND it actually helps your skin look more youthful and dewy, without any chemically-laden crud.

If you are used to buying makeup at a drug store and pay less than $10 for foundation, this may be a step-up money wise for you. But it’s one thing to wear makeup everyday just to cover things up. It’s another to invest in a product that will be helping improve your skin and not just mask the redness. That’s the difference I see between the two.

Also, I don’t spend money on heels, handbags, jewelry, etc. My “girly money” goes towards clean skincare and cosmetics. That’s where my priority lies. If you have had nagging skin issues your whole life, you can probably relate that this is a no-brainer.

Annmarie Gianni Earth Mineral Makeup Review

Annmarie Gianni Organic Skin Care: Mineral Makeup

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

About Anne Marie Gianni Mineral Makeup:

“Introducing: Earth Minerals Multi-Purpose Foundation by Annmarie Skin Care and it’s made from mineral powders that provide beautiful, flawless coverage, and don’t harm your skin or health. It’s easily customizable to a variety skin tones, made with just four natural ingredients, and totally free of hormone disruptors, neurotoxins, or carcinogens.”

I have been lucky enough to try some Annmarie Gianni Organic Skin Care product samples in the past and absolutely loved them! I was amazed at the purity of the products & how much my skin loved them. You can check out that review here.

My Thoughts:

This little set-up that they sent me is SO neat. Not only do you feel like you’re creating your own makeup, but the oil provided is pure, moisturizing and soothing to skin.

I’m not a huge make-up wearer, but I do value having an organic foundation that I can apply to my skin to even out my sunspots and redness on the days I work out of the house. The best part about makeup with no crappy ingredients is that I can fall asleep in this makeup and I don’t have a breakout the next day. I do, however, always make a habit of cleaning my face before bed (With a pure, organic oil) so that I’m fresh faced and my skin can breathe overnight.

The tone that these minerals provide (when mixed with the oil) is perfect for my skin. They have just the right amount of a natural glowy look that they do not make your skin look completely matte.

I will say this, my facial skin tends to get very dark during the warm summer months when I am in the sun. For those months, I use the Olive & Honey minerals more, whereas in the winter, the Pearl & Sand minerals are a better fit. I recommend keeping a “batch” of the darker and the lighter foundation mix on hand so that on any given day, you can match your complexion. Generally speaking, if the foundation matches your neck color, it will blend the best and look the most natural (or at least that’s the case with me).

I have had NO issues with skin irritation. I can’t think of a bad thing to about this mineral makeup. Annmarie has a truly beautiful line of skin care products and now clean cosmetics! If you’ve been looking to clean up your skincare and beauty routine, start here.

Mesmerize Eyeliner Contains 70% Certified Organic ingredients.”

My Description & Thoughts:

I have known about Vapour beauty for several months now, after experiencing one of their products in a Goodebox sample box. They are one of my favorite organic makeup brands–and as you can see, they are on my list of “Brands I Love.”

This line as a whole is USDA Organic and this specific product is 70% organic. Pretty impressive–I’m always eager to try a new Vapour product.

My main problem in the past with eyeliner has been:

-Irritates my eyes

-Doesn’t apply easily and evenly

-Sketchy ingredients

This eyeliner solves all of those problems, making me give this product high ratings. I even used this eyeliner on my wedding day! Vapour makes this color, “truffle” and they also make a black version. I like this brown color because it matches my natural hair color and accentuates my last lash line without being too dramatic looking.

One of the best things about this product is that for me, it doubles as an eyebrow liner. The smudge tool at the opposite end of the liner also helps with making the color blend into the brows. Something as simple as filling in your brows a little bit can accentuate your brow bones and eyes.

I recommend this to any gal on a search for a great, organic eyeliner. As usual, Vapour doesn’t disappoint with this product.

Kaia Naturals: Juicy Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths Review

Kaia Naturals: Juicy Bamboo Cleansing Cloths

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

Finding organic makeup removal cloths is a rare thing, as most that you’ll find are absolutely chemical ridden. Kaia Naturals is a company I’m glad I came across. Amy at Kaia Naturals was a joy to communicate with and she was gracious enough to provide me with samples in order to try these cleansing cloths for the first time.

Kaia Naturals’ Description:

“The natural cleanser, toner, eye makeup remover that doesn’t fry your skin.  we promise! oh and…it naturally removes waterproof mascara without the torture!”

jb-colelciton-slider

My Description & Thoughts:

These little, individually wrapped towelettes couldn’t be any more portable and practical for daily use. I traveled with these recently and they fit easily in my makeup bag and took up virtually no room.

They truly remove all makeup–thoroughly, while somehow still feeling gentle on skin (the good ingredients that the cloths are soaked in are to thank). They even do a great job tackling thick and stubborn eye makeup like eyeliner and mascara. In regards to effectiveness, these could not improve–they are ideal.

It is a real treat for skin to come into contact with organic honey–it is wonderfully and naturally nourishing and also helps maintain an adequate level of moisture on skin. Because of this, these cloths won’t dry out your skin. I would love to see the rest of the ingredients in organic form as well, though I realize organic essential oils are significantly more expensive than non-organic, which would make these cloths pricier, I’d imagine. It would be worth it to me, though, in order to have the peace of mind in knowing I am using the very best on my skin.

It is always nice to see a product that has a list of harmful components that they do not use. This tells me that they are ingredient conscious and see the harm in using those items.

Not having entirely organic ingredients is the only reason that I would not give these Kaia Naturals cleansing cloths “5 stars.” It is worth mentioning, though, that the quality of these cloths is light years better than makeup-removing cloths you’d find in your neighborhood market or drug store. Because of this, and because of the presence of organic honey and gentle bamboo material, I’d definitely recommend these to family and friends who are looking for a natural way to take off makeup.

My Description & Thoughts:

This product is such a wonderful find. In my multi-year experience in learning and exploring the world of organic beauty and cosmetic products, I had not come across a product like this, until now.

Before learning about Rawganic wipes, I was using organic oil concoctions and cotton balls to remove my makeup. Having a wipe that is ready to do the cleaning work is a wonderfully convenient and practical thing. They look like a dream, very thorough on both foundation and eye make-up. The fact that it is made of 100% organic cotton and 95% organic ingredients makes me an interested patron.

I’m glad I discovered this product that that Rawganic was gracious enough to provide me with a sample. It is not everyday that I find new products that I believe are unique and worlds better than other products that they “compete” with.

I also happen to dig the name, big time! RAWGANIC! 🙂
