About Out of Africa:

How We Got Started:

Victor Lulla, a native New Yorker living in Los Angeles, has long nurtured interests in healthy lifestyles, the environment and social responsibility. After briefly considering an early retirement after the sale of his electronics firm in 2002, he instead created California Inside & Out, a manufacturing and distribution company that developed and marketed natural skin and body care products, based in Venice, CA.

Gilles Adamon, owner of Natura Sarl, headquartered in Benin, West Africa, attended the 2005 Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA hoping to find a distributor for his shea butter cosmetic products. As luck would have it, Victor was at the Expo looking for an interesting opportunity to help expand his product line.

The two men found that they shared not only an interest in natural products, but in social responsibility as well. A friendship ensued and Out of Africa was founded later that year as an exclusive joint venture.

The founders agreed that Lulla would purchase state of the art production equipment and raw materials, while Adamon’s team, in collaboration with a West African women’s cooperative, would supply locally-source pure unrefined shea butter. The company-owned factory in Benin now produces 200,000 bars of soap a month, along with an expanding array of other shea butter products. The products are shipped to California Inside & Out for distribution under the trademarked brand Out of Africa.

Shea Butter: Nature’s Miracle Moisturizer. Out of Africa’s shea butter products nourish the skin with 100% pure unrefined shea butter direct from Benin, West Africa. A natural moisturizer and emollient, shea butter contains antioxidant vitamins A, E and F and beneficial fatty acids that leave skin feeling restored and refreshed. The Out of Africa line includes organic shea butter bar soaps, hand and body washes, body butters, lip balms, lotions, body oils and pure unrefined shea butter tins. The natural scents used in our shea butter products are also available in the Out of Africa line of aroma fragrance reed diffusers.

Our “other” mission: Producing premium quality skincare products is only half of our story. Lulla and Adamon’s partnership supports several women’s cooperatives and helps to create jobs in democratic Benin, West Africa. Out of Africa shea butter skincare also sponsors a groundbreaking project in Benin called SCHOOL CHILDREN UNITE. A portion of all sales is being donated to this global leadership initiative.

Thank You! Your purchase helps to support education and local enterprise in Benin, West Africa. “A houana ka ka” *, thank you very much.”

My Thoughts:

When you’re somewhat of a skin care snob like I am (having been spoiled by mailing entirely-organic lines of skin care products), your standards are high. Overall as a brand, I think Out of Africa is doing great things in reference to helping children and families in Africa. I do appreciate that they are committed to not using parabens, phthalates, sulfates, SLS and artificial colors. Those are all positives. However, it still leave this product just slightly above average for me.

I still see a few questionable ingredients (polysorbate-60, phennoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol) that I don’t like seeing in the mix. Besides that, the ingredients that are clearly plant-derived aren’t organic.

This body butter does an okay job of moisturizing. When you compare this product to an entirely organic body butter, well–there’s no comparison. When your skin feels like it’s only quenched for a mere 10 minutes after application, this is usually indicative of a less than pure & less than awesome ingredient lists that contains some “fillers” and water.

Again, I appreciate the efforts to decrease the amount of harsh ingredients, but I simply don’t want to flip over my tube of body butter and see crummy ingredients. That doesn’t make me eager to apply it to my skin. I’d like to see Out of Africa commit to no junky ingredients and more organic ingredients. As it is, I wouldn’t recommend this body butter simply because I know of many other organic alternatives that easily trump it.

Lemon Tea Tree

The aromatherapy effects of its lemony-sweet citral and citronellol constituents have earned it the nickname “happy oil.” Lemon tea tree’s purifying properties make it ideal for air diffusion and homemade cleaning products.”

Lavender Tea Tree

About:

“This Australian tea tree relative, also known as rosalina, matches the purifying strength of tea tree and the soothing gentleness of lavender. Lavender tea tree’s soothing properties make it ideal for air diffusion and your skin care needs.”

Vegetable Glycerin

_______________________________________

My Thoughts:

Aura Cacia is one of just a few go-to aromatherapy brands I look to for essential oils and carrier oils. Their quality is exquisite; and I love that I can find Aura Cacia products at my local health food stores like Natural Grocers or Whole Foods.

There is a myriad of ways that essential oils can be used. I can’t possibly list them all out here, but you can take a look at a few of my recipes in which I use essential oils:

Homemade Deodorant

Homemade Icy Hot

Homemade Toothpaste

I have been using the lemon tea tree and lavender tea tree essential oils in my laundry, in a pre-vacuuming baking soda deodorizer mix and in a facial toning mist. Synthetic fragrance cannot even come close to the pure freshness of essential oils. Using the real deal makes all the difference in the world–especially in regards to skin care.

I am still trying to come up with ways to use the vegetable glycerin. I’ve done a little bit of research–and it looks like a great ingredient to use in soap and moisturizers (which I will dive into, eventually). I’ve contemplated using it as a base for a homemade bug spray or a homemade perfume. I’ll update this post with more ideas as they come!

The castor oil has been the mainstay of my nightly beauty routine. Because it has been recommended for use to encourage hair growth, I’ve been applying it to my lashes and to my eyebrows eyery night before bed. I’ve seen slight improvements over several weeks, as I’ve also made a conscious effort to put down the tweezers, so as to let my brows grow freely and fill in a bit. Castor oil can be used in a bunch of other ways in regards to skin care. Can’t wait to discover more uses!

Aura Cacia will remain in my top favorites with their commitment to fantastic, organic, high-quality ingredients. I’ve truly enjoyed using these products and I’ve certainly smelt incredible in the process. (my house, too!)

Purple Prairie Botanicals Lotion, Bug Spray, Deodorant Review

Purple Prairie Botanicals

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

About Purple Prairie Botanicals:

“Our Story:
Once upon a time there was a mother of three who was tired of her dry, irritated skin and acne problems.  She wondered what happened to the skin she was born with. One day while reading her organic gardening magazine, she found an article about old fashioned soap. She knew this was the answer she had been searching for. Soon after her first batch of soap, her skin was reborn! The instinctual desire to create took over and Purple Prairie was founded in 2000.  We are a Minnesota home grown company started with the belief that our skin needs products made with nature’s ingredients to stay healthy & beautiful. Our products contain the finest nurturing, safe & organic ingredients combined with herbal infusions & pure essential oils which restore the balance of both physical and mental well being. We cater to all skin types including the most sensitive skin. All products are 100% natural unless noted otherwise, environmentally safe, petroleum free & paraben free. We are proud to qualify for the National Green Pages directory.

Our Green Philosophy:

All Purple Prairie Botanicals products are inspired and made with a back-to-basics approach. Our products are made in small batches using nature’s ingredients. Many of our products meet and exceed organic standards. All products must meet the following requirements:

NO Petroleum
NO Parabens
NO Synthetic Dyes
NO Artificial Preservatives
No Animal Ingredients
NO Detergents
NO Sulfates
NO GMOs

Purple Prairie Botanicals has always believed in the protection and sustainability of our natural world and the delicate systems which balance all life as we know it. This planet produces all of the products we share with you, and it is simply a matter of appreciation and respect that must be given. When purchasing our raw materials, we only work with American companies that lead the industry in environmental stewardship and adhere to strict principles and protocols that ensure fair treatment and compensation for the people involved with the production of our ingredients. This includes organic farming and fair trade practices.

Zero Waste:
Purple Prairie Botanicals is a “Zero Waste” company where any materials which might be regarded as waste are either recycled, re-used, composted, reclaimed, or brought back into the production cycle. All invoices, brochures and other paper materials printed for our customers by Purple Prairie Botanicals is a minimum 35% post consumer waste material. We use minimal/recyclable packaging and recycle/reuse everything possible during the production process. We re-use all shipping material(boxes/packing peanuts, etc.) that arrive with our ingredient purchases. All of the office supplies we use are repurposed, reused or recycled. The packaging material we use to cushion your order is 100% repurposed/reused bubble wrap, peanuts and newsprint salvaged and cleaned from other companies and individuals.

Reusing is better than recycling!!

No Animal Testing:
We are in compliance with the PETA statement of assurance. We do not test on animals and do not purchase materials from any company who tests on animals.”

One of the many things this brand description shows is that a company, even without “organic” or “organics” in their name might perhaps use organic ingredients, and visa versa. Checking out their mission and ingredient lists will help give you a better understanding about it.

Great job, Purple Prairie! 🙂

Patchouli Vanilla Lotion

Purple Prairie Botanicals’ Description:

“Rejuvenate the free spirit- This rich, warming aroma taps into your sensual side of life. Its regeneration properties benefit many skin conditions. The hydrating properties of organic olive oil & shea butter will leave your skin nourished, soft and glowing.

WARNING: Might evoke sensual freedom.

99% Natural Ingredients: aqua(water),organic cold pressed olea europaea(olive)fruit oil, hamamelis virginiana(witch hazel),kosher vegetable glycerin, organic helianthus annuus(sunflower) oil, organic cocos nucifera (coconut), cetearyl alcohol, organic butyrospermum parki (shea butter)fruit, pogostemen(Patchouli)oil, vanilla oil, rosmarinus officinalis(rosemary) leaf extract, salix nigra (black willow)extract.”

My Description & Thoughts:

My first thought when receiving this product: My husband, Paul. I remember when I first met Paul we were discussing soap scents as we were contemplating starting a soap business down the road at some point. He told me how much he liked Patchouli in a soap. I agreed with him–it’s rich earthiness is pleasant and masculine smelling.

This lotion has the earthiness of Patchouli and the decadence of Vanilla–it’s an intoxicating combination. My new daughter and I like to give Paul foot rubs some times after he comes home from work–and that is how I first used this lotion. He appeared to enjoy the scent and feel of the lotion. I could tell in rubbing it in that it is rich and comprised of dense, nourishing ingredients.

A lot of lotions can contain a large amount of water and junk, leaving your skin needing more moisture just minutes later. This one does a great job of keeping skin hydrated. Many organic ingredients make up this lotion, which I love. It’s a lotion I’d recommend to Patchouli lovers and those looking for an earthy scented body moisturizer.

Natural Deodorant

Purple Prairie Botanicals’ Description:

“Our deodorant is a safe alternative to the mainstream aluminum laden versions. This is not an antiperspirant but an effective odor neutralizing solid. Lavender, tea tree and palmarosa oil are proven odor eliminators.

  • 100% natural
  • Non-irritating
  • Aluminum Free
  • Paraben Free

Why choose Purple Prairie deodorant over an antiperspirant?

Antiperspirants and deodorants are not the same thing. Antiperspirants work by clogging, closing, and blocking the pores with powerful astringents such as aluminum salts so that they can’t release sweat. (Note that aluminum can accumulate in the brain.) Sweating is a natural cooling and detoxifying process. Sweating is healthy! Deodorants work by neutralizing the smell of the sweat and by antiseptic action against bacteria.

Directions: Use daily to stay fresh and odor free.

100% Natural Ingredients: Apis mellifera (beeswax), organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, organic cold pressed olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa butter), cymbopogan martini (palmarosa oil), pimpinella anisum (anise) oil, lavendula angustifolia (lavender) oil, cupressus sempervirens (cypress oil), melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, zinc oxide and cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) oil.”

My Description & Thoughts:

Man, I was super bummer that this deodorant smells like licorice! I am not a fan of licorice–the smell nor the taste. It must be the anise oil in this deodorant that exudes the licorice smell.

However, my personal preference in smell is no reason to not recommend this deodorant. If you happen to like licorice, I believe you will really take to this deodorant. If you compared this ingredient lists to a stick of deodorant from a big box grocery store, you’d buy this one in a heartbeat. All of these ingredients are familiar and plant based–and a lot of them are organic. What a refreshing thing to see another deodorant (I’ve only come across a handful of good ones that are also effective) that is aluminum free, paraben free and comprised of all natural ingredients.

Despite my distaste for anise, I tried out this deodorant and tested it out on a run outdoors. Funny enough, I knew this deodorant was working well because I continued to smell licorice throughout my run! 🙂 Again, I realize that A LOT of people love this scent. I would recommend this deodorant to THOSE people. It performed well for me, and I perspire profusely when I run in the heat, so that says something.

Bug_Spray_300x300__91250.1380821486.386.513

Deet Free Bug Spray (for pets, too!)

Purple Prairie Botanicals’ Description:

“A natural, safe way to to keep gnats, biting flies and mosquitoes away. A special blend of essential oils and plant extracts in a clean witch hazel and water base. Deet free. Try it on itchy bites, poison ivy, chicken pox and other itchies too. Safe for all ages.

Frolicking outside will be fun again!

Directions: Spray on exposed skin to keep away biting flies, gnats and mosquitoes. Repeat as necessary.  Feel the relief. Avoid eyes. Store in a cool, dark place.

External Use Only

96% Natural Ingredients: aqua (water), hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel), polysorbate 20, eucalyptus citriadora (lemon eucalyptus), azadirachta indica (neem) seed oil, nepeta cataria (catnip) oil, cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) oil, eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus) leaf oil, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oil, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil and salix nigra (black willow) extract.”

My Description & Thoughts:

I loved getting a sample of this product. My family does a lot of outdoor walking and hiking in addition to my daily runs. This bug spray has been much needed at times. An outing is just that much more enjoyable when you don’t have bugs buzzing around your face, biting you, etc. The bottle I received fit perfectly and conveniently into a pocket of my Camelbak. The larger bottle looks just as portable and would certainly fit easily into any pocket or pouch that would normally carry a water bottle.

I found this spray to be very effective! I didn’t have one worry about bugs biting me when I had it applied. I’m sure this is because Purple Prairie uses several potent essential oils, many of which are natural bug repellers. They get the job done and also leave a nice herbaceous, earthy scent on your skin and clothes. It doesn’t smell of chemicals at all, like many bug sprays do.

In addition to this awesome bug spray, Purple Prairie Botanicals makes several products specifically geared towards gardening (My Mom is a Master Gardener and I see these gardening lotions, salves and sprays to be perfect for her).

I think everyone needs some of this bug spray around. It’s a great for a family to have on hand to spray themselves, the kids and the pets before going outdoors. It will allow you to be worry-free about bugs and bug bites.

bottle02

Mun’s Description:

“Night after night, pure and organic No.1 Aknari Nighttime Dream Youth Serum renews the beauty of your skin. At the heart of this luxurious anti-aging formula, three treasures work bedtime wonders: Prickly Pear Seed Oil and Argan Oil combine to transform the appearance of your skin, while soothing Rose Oil lightly scents your sweetest dreams. Every night, the look of wrinkles and fine lines gradually diminishes with the firming and refining of your skin. Every day, your complexion is more even-toned in appearance, glowing with the radiance and vitality of youth.

A nightly anti-aging ritual with No.1 Aknari…

* Instills radiance for a captivating complexion.
* Nourishes, softens and smoothes the skin.
* Helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines.
* Prevents premature wrinkle formation.
* Brightens dark circles and evens out skin tone.
* Protects the skin from free radicals.

Ingredients:

Prickly Pear Seed Oil (ECOCERT Organic), in its pure organic form, has traditionally been used to protect and heal the skin from the harsh and burning desert wind in Southern Morocco. One of the most precious plant oils in the world, it is extracted through a time-involved, hands-on process; 1,500 lbs* of Prickly Pear fruit is needed to produce 1 liter of the rare oil. Prickly Pear Seed Oil is exceptionally rich in Essential Fatty Acids and Vitamin E, a natural antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free radicals. Its inherent anti-aging benefits help reduce the appearance of fine lines and prevent premature wrinkle formation. Additional optimal properties moisturize, nourish, revitalize, soften and smooth the skin, and effectively brighten dark under-eye circles.

* In the spirit of optimum efficiency, all byproducts are used to feed livestock.

Argan Oil (ECOCERT Organic), oftentimes referred to as ‘liquid gold’ in the region of Morocco to which it is exclusive and unique, is extracted from the nuts of the Argan tree. Used by Berber women in Morocco for centuries, its moisturizing and revitalizing properties restore the skin’s barrier while neutralizing free radicals, making it ideal for daily skincare. Suitable for all skin types, it possesses anti-inflammatory properties that diminish the redness caused by enlarged capillaries in the skin, making it the perfect treatment for acne and sunbathed skin.

Rose Oil is created from one of the world’s most beloved flowers, variously known as the Queen of Flowers and a symbol of love, purity and fragrant perfection. Abundant in antioxidants, our Rose Oil, native to Morocco, features rejuvenating properties that soothe and silken while scenting the skin with its delicate bouquet.”

My Description & Thoughts:

I absolutely love this serum. What a dream it is! Prickly pear seed oil is an entirely new concept to me. Its description sounds like it is an ultra nourishing plant for the skin. The quality of the ingredients are wondrous–straight forward, organic and high-quality.

I’ve known about argan oil and rose oil and the applause they get for how they benefit skin, so I was excited to see those ingredients in this product.

Simple and organic is what I look for when looking for a facial serum. I have been using this serum right after cleansing my face (at night). This serum works best if you use it in combination with the water droplets left on skin after cleansing it. This enables the serum to spread more evenly and easily (it truly makes all the difference in the world doing it this way–it will also allow you to use less product to get full face coverage).

You truly only need a small droplet of this oil to cover your entire face. The way this product leaves your skin is the best possible way you could imagine–soft, smooth, hydrated, healthy, refreshed, protected, renewed.

This is one of those few products that I feel grateful for discovering through blogging. Otherwise, I don’t know that I would have ever stumbled upon it. I would recommend this serum to any and everyone. Thought men are perhaps more reluctant to use a facial serum, I believe it could improve the health of their skin, just as it does for women.

I see this product as being a replacement for those pricey skin products that women buy at the mall department stores. Those products are full of junk, just read the ingredient lists! This Mun Nighttime dream youth serum is what you have really been looking for all along. It’s amazing in that it benefits all ages of skin; young, old and every age in between.

My Description & Thoughts:

All 3 of these lip butters are similar in quality of ingredients. The ingredients lists are better than average, as they are familiar and plant-based. However, I would think more of them if they were organic.

Flavor/scent-wise, I think:

Passionfruit is sweet and fresh tasting and smelling. This one would please most that like a fruity lip butter.

Orange Vanilla is an interesting combination to me that absolutely works. I love orange and I love vanilla but wasn’t sure that I’d like them together. The orange gives the richness of the vanilla some zest. I love the rich, lightness of this one. I’d encourage you to try it if you’re unsure like I was.

Razz Lime is a bit tart and zippy combo. Like the passionfruit, its a nice fruity lip butter that adds a little citrusy punch to the lips.

All ingredient and flavor talk aside, I think it’s a beautiful and empowering thing that Rooted Beauty seeks to help women through their Woman2Woman campaign in which they donate portions of their sales for a greater cause. This is a selfless thing that you don’t see often, especially from many brands that are still growing and expanding. This ups my rating for these products a bit!
