Midori Matcha Powder

Overall Rating: 5 Stars

About Midori Matcha Company:

“Matcha is made from freshly picked green tea leaves that are stone-ground into a fine powder. With its rich flavor and creamy texture, it’s considered one of the world’s healthiest beverages. In fact, just one bottle of Midori matcha is equal to ten cups of ordinary green tea! From our perspective, it’s just about the nicest thing you can do for your body.

Energy and Focus

Matcha provides steady, crash-free energy for up to 6 hours. The secret is in its high concentration of L-Theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid that sharpens focus and lifts mood.

Detox & Rejuvenate

Matcha is packed with vibrant green chlorophyll which helps the body cleanse itself of harmful chemicals and toxins. Matcha also has dietary fiber which helps with digestion, controls appetite and stabilizes blood sugar.

Strength and Fat Loss

Matcha contains more antioxidants than any fruit or vegetable on the planet. These powerful nutrients strengthen your immune system, boost metabolism and promote fat loss.”

My Thoughts:

I’m always eager and looking to try new superfoods and supplements that I believe can help boost my health in some way. To be honest, getting me to swap out coffee for matcha tea was a bit of a struggle at first. I love my coffee ritual–everything about it. But, in my mind, I got to a point where there was no denying that green tea matcha powder potentially has a whole-heck-of-a-lot more antioxidants, vitamins and minerals when compared to coffee that has been brewed. Thus, I decided that I’d certainly give matcha its fair shot.

Midori seems to be a fantastic brand that has focused their efforts solely on products that highlight and focus on matcha powder. This is a neat idea because it’s essentially an organic, plant-based brand that has harnessed the rejuvenating effects of matcha to serve as a natural energy drink. Not only do they sell this pure matcha powder, but they’ve also created cold-brew matcha drinks that will be on sale soon. I was lucky enough to try one of their little cans of green goodness.

So, here’s where I really get “picky” about it. In my ideal world, this powder would be raw AND organic. It’s clearly labeled as organic, however it’s unclear whether this powder has been processed with heat. This is huge deal to me because there is a major difference in nutritional value when you compare a raw food to a cooked/heated food. It’s just not even close. There is such a significant health benefits from raw plants; you won’t get those same benefits with a product that’s been heat treated.

I was recently excited to hear that Midori’s matcha powder and drinks are both considered raw. They provide a great explanation of how their drinks are made using cold pressure processing on their website. That’s refreshing to know that Midori is organic & raw. Well worth the money, in that case!

In regards to preparation, the can of matcha powder suggests that the powder be mixed with hot water. I understand that tea is traditionally made with hot water, but–I try to do things as raw as I can, as often as I can. So, instead of using their method, I mix a small amount (I don’t measure, but I’d say it’s about a teaspoon) in my morning superfood drink–along with other goodies like cacao powder, turmeric, cinnamon, etc.

I find that it does indeed provide me with a noticeable energy boost (not jittery, just a good & sustained feeling). Some days, I consume the matcha instead of my morning coffee. Matcha has a naturally occurring caffeine content similar to that of which occurs in a cup of brewed coffee. The difference is that matcha provides more brain boosting power and antioxidants to your system. I like incorporating both matcha and coffee in my diet (you can also find green coffee powder!). For those who don’t drink coffee, matcha may the perfect everyday energy solution.

Garden of Life

Overall Rating: images

I have done several reviews and giveaways on Garden of Life products and believe they create high quality, organic supplements.

If you are submerged in the world of health products, you’ve likely heard about the scrutiny that Garden of Life has been under in regards to their products containing heavy metals. My brief  response (just to address it)–as dismissive as it may be, is that when you’re on the top, many will try to knock you down. I feel a bit that way with this GOL situation. As a successful brand, it does not surprise me that they have individuals who are seeking to find flaws. That said, I do not know the specific, scientific data from the tests that were run on their products, but I would venture to say that these supplements are still worlds better than most.

My Thoughts:

I used Raw Fit and Raw Meal both for about a 6 month period in 2013 because I found that it was hard to find a protein that’s organic, non-gmo and free of common food allergens (like dairy, gluten, soy). In 2014 so far, I’ve seen the biggest strides in my running performance and overall healthful feeling from omitting grains. Because of this, I haven’t been incorporating brown-rice based proteins like this GOL Raw Fit product. This is a more “paleo” way of eating and I’ve found that I feel my best when I stick to it. So, instead of brown-rice proteins, I’ve been using organic whey and hemp based proteins.

I realize that everyone is different, and many of you are likely vegans. For that group of people, I see the appeal for using GOL brown rice protein, as it’s a plant based source of protein that is satisfying and abides by the vegan way of eating. For paleo-eaters similar to myself, I’d recommend listening to you body and trying to figure out when you feel your best. Is it when you omit certain foods like dairy and grains and increasing your intake of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables? That’s been the case for me.

All of that said, this protein tastes wonderful, is high quality and I think is a great recommendation for many individuals. I am an avid coffee drinker and have been a Marley Coffee fan long before GOL collaborated with them to create this product. Their coffee is USDA organic and is delicious & rich (the roasts are also named after Bob Marley songs–so awesome!). You can check out Marley Coffee products here.

My Thoughts:

I’m all about making detoxification a part of my every day life. Detoxing don’t have to mean implementing a product like this, but occasionally its a great, extra boost. Some great every day habits for detoxing are thinking blended greens (not juiced), fresh fruit and vegetable juices and drinking citrus-infused water.

I was impressed with the list of herbs that this GOL Detox contains, as many of them are naturally potent liver detoxifiers.

I think a common misconception with detoxing is that you are going to feel this instant WHOA! I FEEL CLEANSED! In reality, it’s not like that. If you pay attention to how your body feels daily, though, you will notice that you have a bit more energy, you don’t have digestive issues (bloating, stomach aches. constipation) when you do a detox like this. Those are the main things I noticed.

I would recommend this cleanse to anyone that has not done an herbal detox before. This detox can also help those that suffer from acne–as many acne problems are a result of a liver that is not functioning optimally.

These herbs are different than other detoxes that just use fiber to clear out your digestive tract. You’ll love the slight boost it gives you–you’ll feel cleaner and clearer, inside and out.
