Boulder Canyon Potato Chips: New Packaging + Flavors

This post is sponsored by Boulder Canyon Foods.

About Boulder Canyon:

Boulder Canyon is proud to be among the natural food innovators who strongly believe in using real food ingredients to make better snacks. In 1994, two brothers, Don and Jay Poore, had an idea for a better mouse trap.  In this case, it was a potato chip that would fly in the face of convention to prove that consumers would be willing to pay a little more for an extraordinary snacking experience. Today, we have over 30 unique better-for-you snacks with fewer, better and minimally processed ingredients. We make these with unique oils to fit your taste and health preferences. Next time you’re in your local grocery or natural foods store, pick up a bag of Boulder Canyon snacks and flip it over. On the ingredient list, you will most often find three, maybe four ingredients. For instance, “Potatoes, Avocado Oil, Sea Salt,” is all there is to find within our Avocado Oil Canyon Cut™ chips, but we’d wager a bet that it’s a snack experience unlike any you’ve had before.

My Experience:

the rad team at Boulder Canyon is on a mission (+with fresh new packaging) to inspire you to FOLLOW YOUR PATH.
i mean, if this doesn’t align with how my life has gone, iuno what does. FER SHER i have taken the path less traveled (at times with small amounts of logic and heaps of resistance from others) in my life. which reminds me of a fave quote: “if you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, you know it’s not your path. your own path you make with every step you take. that’s why it’s your path.” -Joseph Campbell
Boulder Canyon is a brand I value for their commitment to non-GMO ingredients, sickkk flavors and usage of clean oil choices (not inflammatory in nature like canola or soybean oil)
they sent me 9 different flavors to try! the Buffalo Ranch and Malt Vinegar (both pictured) are the two i’m most excited about.
with all of the paleo meals we prepare at home, I’m always craving a crunch, and that’s what these chips satisfy for me. The flavor, the texture after entire mouthfeel make me feel like I’m splurging; but with clean ingredients, there’s no guilt.
checkity check them out over at their Instagram page for more deets on their freshie fresh new line up!

Our Experience:

My boyfriend and I live together and we are both pretty big eaters! We do so much cooking at home, both because we enjoy it and it’s more cost effective than going out to eat all the time. Luke coaches Crossfit and ran track in college, so with my food/athletic experience and his knowledge, we are both decently educated in nutrition and do a pretty good job of making it happen for ourselves as far as home-cooked meals go.

But even then, there are times we lack creativity and find ourselves cravings some new dishes and new ideas. I’ve never been signed up for anything similar to Platejoy; we’ve always just been winging it in the kitchen and putting all the healthy foods we like together in a yummy way. I wasn’t sure at first that it would be of use for us since we are health nuts most of the time.

I was so encouraged and surprised to see how many great ideas I have been getting from Platejoy. I really love that you can search for recipes by ingredient based on what we have at home. While I’m not big on abiding by and sticking to exact measurements/recipes, I like getting new concepts for dishes or ways to change up meals I’ve made a bunch of times.

Probably the biggest advantage I see of having Platejoy is that you can acquire a “menu” to use that completely adheres to your style of eating, whether it’s vegan, low-carb, no eggs, etc. This a game changer actually. We strive to eat gluten and dairy free (Luke eats eggs, I limit them) with a focus on healthy fats, veggies and some fruit. It was super easy to  “tell” my Platejoy sign up page that that’s the way we eat. Then voila! It was like ready to go, customized-feeling batch of meals and ideas for us to take and run with. You can even enter your weight loss goals (if you have any) and get a shopping list to take to the grocery store. So many thoughtful + cool little perks.

We typically don’t have an issue with food waste, but it’s awesome that Platejoy can help you eliminate that by telling you how much food to buy based on how many of you are in your household. Also the handiness and accessibility provided through the app is awesome for taking your phone into the kitchen/planning/etc.

Two of the meals I’ve made so far are pictured above! I made the Mango + Greens Smoothie alongside the Breakfast hash (I added in sweet potato and pork sausage instead of the apple and bacon in the recipe. They are both so satisfying and DELISH!

Primal Kitchen Paleo Collagen Bars + Mayo + Ranch Review

One of my favorite, most influential entrepreneurs + minds + health advocates is Mark Sisson. Mark has many accolades at this point, but I know him from his blog, Mark’s Daily Apple, his brands Primal Blueprint and this one (Primal Kitchen), and have also heard him on the Melissa Ambrosini Podcast.

In many ways, I view his products as “Pre-Approved” by Mark himself. I sorta of intrust him to come up with products that are high quality and are aligned with a lifestyle that largely uses real food and fat as fuel. That has worked well for my body, hormones and overall state of health.

Here are the Primal Kitchen products I tried:

Garlic Aioli Mayonaise w/ Avocado Oil:

A creamy combination of garlic, rosemary, and cage-free eggs, this savory mayonnaise spread is infused with nourishing ingredients and uncompromisingly delicious taste.

Avocado Oil Ranch Dressing:

The holy grail of dressings: an uncompromisingly delicious, rich, full-flavored and oh-so-healthy ranch dressing.

Avocado Oil Mayonnaise:

Healthy Mayo, who knew? Made with avocado oil, superfood ingredients and organic herbs and spices.

Pure Avocado Oil:

First cold pressed and centrifuge extracted without heat to preserve the true properties of the oil—antioxidants, minerals and a high concentration of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats.

Dark Chocolate Almond Collagen Bar:

Turkish almonds and roasted pumpkin seeds enrobed in a chewy dark chocolate, caramel coating.

Macadamia Sea Salt Collagen Bar:

Macadamia nuts and a touch of sea salt offer a distinctly buttery, savory and sweet flavor combination, with only 12 grams of carbs.

Chocolate Hazelnut Collagen Bar:

The coveted combination of chocolate and hazelnut we all love, made with organic fair-trade cacao and paired with toasted hazelnuts.

Coconut Cashew Collagen Bar:

Cashews and roasted pumpkin seeds satisfy with a nutty crunch, while creamy coconut adds a hint of sweetness.

Where do I start? I’m just so glad that these options are now out there! With the inflammatory effects being so real with heavily processed oils like canola and soybean, finding dressings that are healthy has been such a struggle. Before Primal Kitchen, I would normally just bite the bullet and have crappy dressings, or make my own healthier take at home (which would never taste as good). Luckily now I don’t have to worry about that.

There are so many ways to use these products. My favorite use for the Avocado Oil is to roast vegetables (see above). I’ve also been loving tuna salads lately. (see below) Both the Garlic Aioli Mayo and traditional Avocado Oil Mayo work so good. I also add some hot sauce, sea salt and pepper to taste.

The ranch is….well…it’s really good ranch. And I’m a sauce queen! Give me ALL the dips and I’m happy. Of course I try to keep my diet clean but I do love dressing. This is such a rad, delicious alternative to most of the cruddy ranch dressings you’ll find in stores.

I’ve been a consistent collagen user for close to 2 years now. I’ve noticed a difference in my gut health, as well in my hair + skin + nails. There are so many benefits to incorporating collagen and it may take some people a bit of time to notice a legit difference. Primal Kitchen didn’t have to talk me into trying their collagen bars for that reason!

I found the bars a little bit hard to bite into (they’re pretty dense and hold together real tightly). But besides that, the ingredients are super clean, simple and the taste is satisfying. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Almond!

Healthy Finds Subscription Review

Screen Shot 2018-02-10 at 1.51.36 PM.png

About Healthy Finds:

Healthy Finds is a monthly subscription service ($7 a month) that allows you the unique opportunity to discover and try out a multitude of natural health products + supplements. Many of these brands don’t put a ton of money into advertising; their focus is on quality. Thus, you may have never heard of them.

Anddd…they don’t just pick ANY products. Healthy Finds only works with brands that are approved by their wellness team, run by Dr Andrew Campbell.

When you sign up for Healthy Finds, you will receive hundreds of dollars in savings (in the form of gift cards that can be redeemed online) towards some of the healthiest brands online + accompanied with information-rich wellness literature and learning material.

What I Think:

After having the priviledge to attend a huge natural products industry convention (Expo West) twice, I completely agree that there are so many incredible products out there being made by brands who are choosing to invest their money in the quality and integrity of their product, versus paying a large amount of money towards advertising and marketing their product. So many great brands go unseen because of this.

I love that Healthy Finds does the research for you and vets the brands ahead of time. The list of brands they work with range from brands that make tea, to healthy granola-type bars, to ketogenic lifestyle supplements. I was impressed by the diversity.

I would compare this to the idea of receiving a subscription box every month that is curated with products for the healthy living lover.

I see the positives being:

-$7 a month is reasonable

-Since they don’t pick the exact products for you, you get to decide which products from each brand you want.

-You shop online for them, so it’s convenient

-You get to discover brands that you might not otherwise ever know about

-The idea of the service is original!

I see a few shortcomings:

-You may end up spending more out of pocket than you’d like to, since the savings is in the form of a $10 or $20 gift card towards your purchase

-Shopping at several different individual online websites to use each gift card is a little inconvenient

I do think the positives outweigh the negatives here, especially if you’re an optimum-health seeking individual who is already shopping online frequently for supplements, nutrition and self care items.

Wanna sign up? Healthy Finds has a promotion running right now. Go check them out! (I don’t even get commission if you do, I just want you to know about ALL the health!)
