I’ll be the first person to tell you that I tend to make smoothies at home mostly because I can control the ingredients and I know what I’m in for. From my experience (and I’ve been out of the buying-smoothies-outside-the-house-game for a while), mass-produced and/or store bought smoothies are imbalanced. Meaning they are either full of mostly sugar or mostly protein. Also, they commonly lack micronutrients because they are not made with whole foods.

My body responds well to a lower-sugar & carb diet (nope, I don’t run from carbs or claim to be keto 100% of the time), I’ve just noticed that my body responds well if carbs do not dominate my diet. Also keep in mind–every body is different and has different needs.

Okay okay, so without going too far down the nutrition rabbit hole–here’s how Smoothie King has changed how I look at store-bought smoothies. Smoothie King’s HIIT Fit smoothies fit so well into my approach (by the way, HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training, which is a good description of my Crossfit lifestyle).

I am not neurotic or obsessive about it, but I do strive to get a good dose of healthy carbs right after my workout. It’s a habit that I stick to most of the time because it allows me to burn fat during my workouts instead of running on carbs that I just ingested. In other words, other individuals may ingest their carbs before their workout, but I opt not to for that reason. I do what’s called carb-backloading. These smoothies allow me to refuel my depleted glycogen stores after my workout thru the fruits used in both of these blends.

When I first heard about these new smoothie options, I was floored. Mainly because I am used to store-made smoothies to be full of things I typically stay away from like dairy, processed fruit juices, added sweeteners, artificial ingredients, etc. I’m excited to know about these new offerings and see Smoothie King as a place I can look to for my post-workout, paleo-friendly gains!

Not to mention that both blends are super duper delicious (no joke) and I can see my taste buds craving each one on different days.

A Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe (Paleo + Keto Friendly + Vegan)

This healthy recipe and nod to the seasonal favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte will tackle your sweet tooth and give you a boost without all the sugar and artificial crud.

⌛️INGREDIENTS:

⌛️PREP:

-combine all ingredients with coffee in whatever the heck kind of order you want.

-for medium awesome, stir them in.

Our Experience:

My boyfriend and I live together and we are both pretty big eaters! We do so much cooking at home, both because we enjoy it and it’s more cost effective than going out to eat all the time. Luke coaches Crossfit and ran track in college, so with my food/athletic experience and his knowledge, we are both decently educated in nutrition and do a pretty good job of making it happen for ourselves as far as home-cooked meals go.

But even then, there are times we lack creativity and find ourselves cravings some new dishes and new ideas. I’ve never been signed up for anything similar to Platejoy; we’ve always just been winging it in the kitchen and putting all the healthy foods we like together in a yummy way. I wasn’t sure at first that it would be of use for us since we are health nuts most of the time.

I was so encouraged and surprised to see how many great ideas I have been getting from Platejoy. I really love that you can search for recipes by ingredient based on what we have at home. While I’m not big on abiding by and sticking to exact measurements/recipes, I like getting new concepts for dishes or ways to change up meals I’ve made a bunch of times.

Probably the biggest advantage I see of having Platejoy is that you can acquire a “menu” to use that completely adheres to your style of eating, whether it’s vegan, low-carb, no eggs, etc. This a game changer actually. We strive to eat gluten and dairy free (Luke eats eggs, I limit them) with a focus on healthy fats, veggies and some fruit. It was super easy to  “tell” my Platejoy sign up page that that’s the way we eat. Then voila! It was like ready to go, customized-feeling batch of meals and ideas for us to take and run with. You can even enter your weight loss goals (if you have any) and get a shopping list to take to the grocery store. So many thoughtful + cool little perks.

We typically don’t have an issue with food waste, but it’s awesome that Platejoy can help you eliminate that by telling you how much food to buy based on how many of you are in your household. Also the handiness and accessibility provided through the app is awesome for taking your phone into the kitchen/planning/etc.

Two of the meals I’ve made so far are pictured above! I made the Mango + Greens Smoothie alongside the Breakfast hash (I added in sweet potato and pork sausage instead of the apple and bacon in the recipe. They are both so satisfying and DELISH!

Primal Kitchen Paleo Collagen Bars + Mayo + Ranch Review

One of my favorite, most influential entrepreneurs + minds + health advocates is Mark Sisson. Mark has many accolades at this point, but I know him from his blog, Mark’s Daily Apple, his brands Primal Blueprint and this one (Primal Kitchen), and have also heard him on the Melissa Ambrosini Podcast.

In many ways, I view his products as “Pre-Approved” by Mark himself. I sorta of intrust him to come up with products that are high quality and are aligned with a lifestyle that largely uses real food and fat as fuel. That has worked well for my body, hormones and overall state of health.

Here are the Primal Kitchen products I tried:

Garlic Aioli Mayonaise w/ Avocado Oil:

A creamy combination of garlic, rosemary, and cage-free eggs, this savory mayonnaise spread is infused with nourishing ingredients and uncompromisingly delicious taste.

Avocado Oil Ranch Dressing:

The holy grail of dressings: an uncompromisingly delicious, rich, full-flavored and oh-so-healthy ranch dressing.

Avocado Oil Mayonnaise:

Healthy Mayo, who knew? Made with avocado oil, superfood ingredients and organic herbs and spices.

Pure Avocado Oil:

Dark Chocolate Almond Collagen Bar:

Where do I start? I’m just so glad that these options are now out there! With the inflammatory effects being so real with heavily processed oils like canola and soybean, finding dressings that are healthy has been such a struggle. Before Primal Kitchen, I would normally just bite the bullet and have crappy dressings, or make my own healthier take at home (which would never taste as good). Luckily now I don’t have to worry about that.

There are so many ways to use these products. My favorite use for the Avocado Oil is to roast vegetables (see above). I’ve also been loving tuna salads lately. (see below) Both the Garlic Aioli Mayo and traditional Avocado Oil Mayo work so good. I also add some hot sauce, sea salt and pepper to taste.

The ranch is….well…it’s really good ranch. And I’m a sauce queen! Give me ALL the dips and I’m happy. Of course I try to keep my diet clean but I do love dressing. This is such a rad, delicious alternative to most of the cruddy ranch dressings you’ll find in stores.

I’ve been a consistent collagen user for close to 2 years now. I’ve noticed a difference in my gut health, as well in my hair + skin + nails. There are so many benefits to incorporating collagen and it may take some people a bit of time to notice a legit difference. Primal Kitchen didn’t have to talk me into trying their collagen bars for that reason!

I found the bars a little bit hard to bite into (they’re pretty dense and hold together real tightly). But besides that, the ingredients are super clean, simple and the taste is satisfying. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Almond!
