Éminence is picky when it comes to the ingredients we include in our award winning products. We believe that Mother Nature has the best tools for effective skin care so we take great pride in only using her bounty to create all that we offer you. Our products contain organic and Biodynamic®  grown fruits, vegetables and herbs.

It is important to read and understand the labels of the products you use, and with that in mind, there are some ingredients that we avoid. Our products do not contain harmful chemicals like Parabens, Petrolatum, Mineral Oils, Propylene Glycol or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. They are not tested on animals and are packaged in environmentally friendly packaging.

Certification

Éminence has been providing the beauty industry with organic alternatives to skin care since 1958. With the organic products market growing rapidly due to increasing consumer demand for food, cosmetic and nutraceutical products, it is becoming more important to look for proof of certification to ensure validity of organic claims.

European certification is known to have the strictest guidelines and organic regulations worldwide. Éminence has long been certified organic by Biokontroll, the main certification organization in Hungary where most of our potent and active ingredients are grown.  We are also certified by Demeter International which has been in use in Europe since 1928 and is still regarded as providing the highest standards for organic products in the world. As a non-profit organization, their mission is to “improve the health of the planet and its people by providing certification of products whose ingredients are grown and processed according to the highest agricultural and environmental standards.” From farm to market, only those companies that consistently meet these standards will be certified by Demeter, and Éminence is counted as one of them. Customers can use Éminence products with 100% confidence that they are safe and fully compliant with US and international labeling requirements and regulations as we also hold certifications with both USDA-Oregon Tilth and USDA-ASCO.

Celebrating more than 50 years of organic practices is an achievement of which to be proud but creating products that are kind to the environment is even better. Éminence is committed to being the industry leader in keeping our planet green; since our inception in 1958, we have been using sustainable farming and green practices to create organic products and are constantly looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, from the harvest and production of products to how they are packaged and, finally, how they reach spa clients. We even enlist wind and solar power energy in the making of products, use recyclable packaging, vegetable-based inks in printing, FSC certified post-consumer recycled paper and our Beyond Organic line is created with Biodynamic® farming practices. We think Mother Nature would be proud!

If you’ve been keeping track you will notice that Éminence holds certifications for several national and international organic certifying bodies. It is clear that we take our promise to you and the Earth seriously and use organic and natural ingredients in every single one of our amazing skin care products – and we’ve got the stamps to prove it!”

My Thoughts:

Eminence is a big breath of fresh air. It’s actually really enjoyable to read the mission of a brand that clearly values using organic ingredients and what goes into their skin care products. Besides that, these products have been a real joy to use.

I LOVE the pear & poppy seed microderm polisher. It smells divine (I could just sit and smell it like I would a candle) and the consistency of the scrub is perfect. It acts as the perfect clarifier for the post-workout grime that accumulates on my face (I almost always am outside–and this time of year its warm!).

I am a huge fan of incorporating greens into your diet, thus I really enjoyed applying the Eight Greens Youth Serum to my face. It applied a little bit differently than the serums I’m used to. It seems that the content is more watery substances, rather than oily (not a bad thing, just different). It left a replenished and fresh feeling on my face. Sometimes my skin seems to need mainly moisture, but other days it just appears to need a nutrient boost. This serum is great for those lighter days.

Wearing an SPF moisturizer is not something I’m accustomed to doing, mainly because many of them contain chemical sunscreens. I like that this one uses a physical sunscreen, zinc oxide–which is not readily absorbed by your skin. It sits atop skin and forms a barrier against the sun. I’ve applied it before going off to run in the sun and had no red, sun kissed cheeks. I’d say it worked well.

I know that probiotics are good for my stomach, so I love the idea of putting a probiotic moisturizer on my face. This one is a light moisturizer, is cooling on my skin and I found it perfect as a day cream.

Overall, this is a great selection of products, stellar ingredients and I can’t wait to try more of their unique skin care items!

How to Analyze Beauty Product Ingredient Lists

ingredient lists beauty chemicals

This post is completely and entirely based upon my own experience in shopping for organic beauty products. It’s not an exact science, and I’m not an expert–just a seasoned organic product user.

However, I do have a “method” to deciding which products are acceptable or not and I’d like to share it with all of you. Thank you Bonnie for suggesting the idea of doing this post!

If you are shopping online, this task is a lot easier, as you have access to the brand’s website and information. When in the store, you are left with referring to their packaging to decifer the quality. I suggest doing this when inquiring about a brand via their website:

1. Go to the “About” or “Our Philosophy” portion of the site and read about the company.

-You can learn a lot in a hurry by doing this. You can also find out right away how transparent a company is in divulging the source of their ingredients and the standards they hold their products and ingredients to.

2. Go to a specific product on their website and see if they display an ingredient list.

-If a company doesn’t now display an ingredient list with a product on their site, that is often not a good sign! From my experience, if companies use high quality, organic ingredients, they want their customers to know that and they will make it a point to make that evident. The same goes for packaging in stores. You WANT the products that have ingredient lists displayed. You want to look for lots of organic ingredients (often have an asterisk by them, like this “evening primrose oil*”) and be cautioned if you see a long ingredient list with ingredients that you do not recognize.

Here is a great example:

EXCEPTIONAL!

osmia

Beware, this is an ingredient list you won’t see often! 🙂 This is the ingredient list of the Black Clay Facial Soap by Osmia Organics. If that brand sounds new to you, go aquaint yourself. This brand is the best brand I have ever discovered, hands down.

As you can see on this ingredient list, all of the proper plant names are specified in parenthesis and there are asterisks gallore (organic par-tayy!). Osmia Organics ingredient lists are the gold standard.

Opposite from the great, you have the lousy, as you see in this anonymous beauty product ingredient list:

Abysmal!

badlist

Mind you, these are ingredients that are intended for your FACE. Hopefully it is obvious to you that this ingredient list is shocking. There are nearly 40 ingredients and very few of them are recognizable. In comparing this list to the Osmia list above, you should ingrain in your mind: This List: BAD, Osmia list: GREAT.

3. Scrutinize the ingredient list and be mindful of how recognizable they are.

-If you can’t pronounce it, perhaps you shouldn’t be comfortable applying it to your skin.

4. Here are some key ingredients to always avoid:

-Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Parfum, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Triclosan, Phthalates, Benzoyl Peroxide, and ingredients ending in “-methicone” or “-siloxane” or containing “eth.”

5. Look for the brands that display things on their packaging like “paraben-free” or “SLS free” or “93% organic.”

-This will let you know that the brand is ingredient conscious and is making an effort to make this clear to you, the consumer. Checking out the ingredient list is still important even on products that have those phrases on display.

I hope this helps any of you have a little bit more clarity on what is important when it comes to picking beauty and skin care products. If you have any additional questions that I did not cover, please feel free to ask in a comment!

My Description & Thoughts on the Cleanser & Cream:

I am such an advocate for hemp seeds and oil, so to discover The Wonder Seed was a neat thing because this is a brand that highlights and utilizes organic hemp seed oil in all of their products.

This is an oil that is expansive in its healing properties and makes these products very dense and rich.

This cleanser is certainly that way–I’d say this cleanser cleaness gently and has a more hydrating effect on skin than clarifying. Though the cleanser has a lot of organic ingredients, the job that it does in clearing the dirty feeling off of my skin is not exactly what I like. I wish it felt a bit more thorough in how it cleans.

I’d recommend this cleanser to someone who has skin much different than mine. Perhaps, skin that has redness, itchiness, craves moisture and soothing would benefit most from this cleanser.

Because the cleanser provides a very mild and gentle clean, I find the facial cream to be a bit much when using it in combination with the cleanser. For my oily skin, my ideal cleanser is very clarifying and thorough and my ideal moisturizer helps replenish a bit of the moisture back to skin that is taking while cleansing. I like being able to control the moisture on my skin by how I apply the moisturizer–and don’t like when the cleanser provides a ton of moisture.

I think a lot of individuals will find this cleanser and cream duo to be perfect for their skin. However, I would not recommend it for active individuals who struggle with excess facial oil and perspiration.

The Wonder Seed’s Description:

“Our color-safe hemp seed oil conditioner works for all hair types to nourish your scalp and increase moisture and shine while making your hair smooth, more manageable and providing nutrients for a healthy bounce and your best hair days ever!  The sweet orange scent is fresh and exhilarating.  It balances your scalp’s natural oil profile and seals in moisture.  No matter what type of hair you have, this nutritious conditioner will please.  The hemp seed oil is truly super food for your scalp and will even help clear up issues like dry, itchy or flakey scalp, Eczema, Psoriasis etc.  And the formula is gentle and clean enough for infants; Mothering Magazine wrote up our hair care in their “Strokes of Genius” column in 2009.

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Virgin Organic Hemp Seed Oil, Orange Essential Oil, Organic Jasmine Blossom Extract,Organic Aloe Vera, Ginseng Extract, Camphor Essential Oil, Mandarin White Oil, LYCD (Live Yeast Cell Derivative), Nettle Extract,Coconut Oil, Burdock Extract, Palm Kernel Glyceride, Soy Protein, Apple Cider Vinegar, Hyaluronic Acid (Natural Plant Based),Soluble Natural Plant Collagen, Cetyl Alcohol (Coconut Oil Based), Decanoic Acid, Lauryl Glucoside (Lauryl Oil Based), Green Papaya Concentrate, Lemongrass Extract, Potassium Stearate (Natural Plant Based),Geranium Extract, Carnauba Wax, Cetyl Esters, Sorbitan Stearate (Strawberry Based), Isostearyl Palmitate (Palm Oil Based), Horseradish Extract, Behenic Acid, Nutmeg Oil Extract, Sea Salt.”

My Description & Thoughts on the Shampoo & Conditioner:

My feelings regarding these two products are very reminiscent of my feelings on the cleanser and cream. In a shampoo, I prefer a thorough clean and in a shampoo I like controlling the moisture that is in my hair by controlling how much product I use.

Like I shared in the aforementioned bit on the face products, I have oily skin, which of course includes my scalp. I exercise and sweat frequently which surely contributes to this already oily situations. Because of this, I look forward to showers in which I can get all the “gunk” off of my body. So, mild shampoos don’t do the trick for me.

Similar to the richness of the face cream, this conditioner is very rich and is capable of bringing the driest hair back to life.  My hair doesn’t need all of that moisture, though. To give you a better idea: when I used the shampoo and followed up with the conditioner, my hair didn’t feel clean afterwards, it felt oily and like it needed another shampoo job. That said, these products are good, just not for my hair and skin type. I love and appreciate the use of organic ingredients in them and wish they were a better fit for me.

If you or someone you know has dry skin and/or dry hair, this product will likely be just what you’ve been looking for.

Kaia Naturals: Juicy Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths Review

20130827-135714.jpg

Kaia Naturals: Juicy Bamboo Cleansing Cloths

Overall Rating: 4 Stars

Finding organic makeup removal cloths is a rare thing, as most that you’ll find are absolutely chemical ridden. Kaia Naturals is a company I’m glad I came across. Amy at Kaia Naturals was a joy to communicate with and she was gracious enough to provide me with samples in order to try these cleansing cloths for the first time.

Kaia Naturals’ Description:

“The natural cleanser, toner, eye makeup remover that doesn’t fry your skin.  we promise! oh and…it naturally removes waterproof mascara without the torture!”

jb-colelciton-slider

My Description & Thoughts:

These little, individually wrapped towelettes couldn’t be any more portable and practical for daily use. I traveled with these recently and they fit easily in my makeup bag and took up virtually no room.

They truly remove all makeup–thoroughly, while somehow still feeling gentle on skin (the good ingredients that the cloths are soaked in are to thank). They even do a great job tackling thick and stubborn eye makeup like eyeliner and mascara. In regards to effectiveness, these could not improve–they are ideal.

It is a real treat for skin to come into contact with organic honey–it is wonderfully and naturally nourishing and also helps maintain an adequate level of moisture on skin. Because of this, these cloths won’t dry out your skin. I would love to see the rest of the ingredients in organic form as well, though I realize organic essential oils are significantly more expensive than non-organic, which would make these cloths pricier, I’d imagine. It would be worth it to me, though, in order to have the peace of mind in knowing I am using the very best on my skin.

It is always nice to see a product that has a list of harmful components that they do not use. This tells me that they are ingredient conscious and see the harm in using those items.

Not having entirely organic ingredients is the only reason that I would not give these Kaia Naturals cleansing cloths “5 stars.” It is worth mentioning, though, that the quality of these cloths is light years better than makeup-removing cloths you’d find in your neighborhood market or drug store. Because of this, and because of the presence of organic honey and gentle bamboo material, I’d definitely recommend these to family and friends who are looking for a natural way to take off makeup.
