*Made with USDA organic oils.”

My Description & Thoughts:

This body polish smells like taking a deep breath of ocean air. It is like having a little container of the beach with you in your shower.

The oily mixture and grittiness of this polish make it such a nourishing experience for your skin. The grit isn’t too abrasive, but just enough to remove the dead skin cells from the surface. I think this scent would appeal to both men & women, making it great to put in a shower for family or guests in your house (if you are nice enough to share such a treat!). 🙂

I love that Just Neem uses organic oils in this body polish. Most of the other ingredients are clean–as they do not use sulfates, parabens and phthalates (all harsh chemicals) in their product line.

Coconut Soap

Just Neem’s Description:

“Saturate your skin with the moisturizing elements of Coconut oil and the healing benefits of Neem. This Coconut Neem soap is perfect for irritated and stressed skin. It relieves dryness and helps fight skin infections. The exotic Coconut-Vanilla fragrance is plainly irresistible! It reminds you of relaxing at the beach!

Use our Coconut soap for your face as well as your body. Many customers have reported it’s excellent use for Acne prone skin.

  • 4.2 oz bar
  • Exceptional face & body soap
  • Healing Neem
  • Natural glycerin soap
  • Moisturizing Coconut oil
  • Good for acne prone skin
  • Naturally antibacterial

Purified Water, Glycerin (from sugar and vegetable oil), Sodium Stearate (from salt and vegetable oil), Sorbitol (a sugar), Propylene Glycol (from sugar and vegetable oil), Neem Leaves (a healing herb), Sodium Laureth Sulphate (from mineral acid, vegetable fatty acids, and sodium carbonate), Coconut Oil (a moisturizing oil), Stearic Acid (from vegetable oil), Lauric Acid (from coconut and palm oil), Titanium Dioxide (a natural oxide), Fragrance Oil.”

My Description & Thoughts:

This soap smells like coconut heaven! Like the body polish brings you right to the ocean, this soap brings you right to a beach surrounded by coconut trees. The coconut scent is rich and intoxicating.

I use it as a hand soap by my bathroom sink, but it is also fantastic for acne prone skin, as Just Neem suggests. Having a dual purpose soap on hand that smells divine is a great thing.

It leaves skin clean but not stripped, and smelling fantastic. Unfortunately, I’m a bit discouraged by some of the ingredients because they are items that I have learned to be harsh. Would love and applaud this soap a lot more without those extras.

Lovely Summer Body Lotion

Just Neem’s Description:

“Nourish your skin to a healthy glow! Our Neem lotion contains the healing properties of Neem and the long lasting moisturizing elements of Jojoba and Coconut oil.  This hydrating, all-natural body lotion is a wonderful skin protecting and soothing agent for dry skin. Pair our lotions with  soap, bath salt, or body polish of the same fragrance. Choose your favorite scent!

  • 8 oz bottle
  • Healing Neem extract
  • Jojoba & Coconut oil
  • Soothing and deeply moisturizing
  • For eczema and extremely dry skin
  • 7 different fragrances
  • Or choose fragrance free

Distilled Water, Neem-infused Sunflower Oil (Azadirachta indica and Helianthus Annuus), Emulsifying Wax, (Cetearyl Alcohol & Ceteareth 20), Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis), Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Coconut Oil (Caprylic/Capric Acid), Optiphen (Phenoxyethanol & Caprylyl Glycol), Fragrance Oil.”

My Description & Thoughts:

The smell of this lotion of lovely, summery, and so pleasant to smell as you apply. The consistency is rich and enables a little bit of the lotion to go a long way.

This ingredient list looks a bit cleaner than the soap, which is great. The moisture lasts on my skin for a long time with no need for re-application.

I would recommend these products to someone looking to be reminded of the beach and summer while showering!

I And Love And You Dog Food Review

I and Love and You Dog Food

Overall Rating: 3 Stars

Since rescuing our black labrador mix, Kona, in March 2013, my fiancee and I have been dedicated to learning more about the best foods for Kona. The value we place on implementing organic food in our diets has undeniably spilled over onto how we feed Kona. She regularly gets organic chia, flax and hemp seeds as well as organic hemp oil. I was eager to get Kona acquainted with a new daily dog food rather than the generic food that she had been started on as a puppy with her foster “puppy parents.” I came across I and Love and You dog food at a local grocery store in Kansas, Natural Grocers. After reading the ingredient list, I thought it looked clean compared to other dog food labels I read in the store, and bought a bag. After sharing my purchase and interest in this brand via Twitter, Lindsay at “I and Love and You” was generous enough to provide me with samples to give Kona a taste of more products. She also included some coupons for future dry dog food purchases, which we have already utilized–every little bit helps! Our beautiful Kona is pictured below: image-1 image

Here is a bit of background about this brand off of their website:

“THERE ARE FURRYPALS AND NON-FURRY PALS. WE’RE YOUR NON-FURRY ONES. Your pet knows you pretty well. Better than most of your friends, probably. He’s watched you sing Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” while you mow the lawn. He knows the true frequency of your workouts, and he
witnessed that one time you sobbed while watching that Meryl Streep movie. “What? No, Fido. I’m not crying. There’s just something in my eye.” They know us and they love us all the same. And we can’t help but love them back. They’re part of the family. The fun part of the family. (After all, your dog never gave you an embroidered snowman sweater for your birthday). “I and love and you” knows all about that very special bond between pets and humans. They give us undying devotion, and we give them the best food, the best love, and the best goofy Halloween costumes. “Whiskers, come here, buddy. Your pirate hat is a little crooked.” We’re committed to helping you with the best food + love part (you’re on your own with the costumes). Every one of our products meets rigorous ingredient standards and has been formulated by our holistic veterinarian. And not only do we promise to be good to your pets, but as a green company, we also promise to be good to our planet. Pretty soon you’re going to want to make “I and love and you” a part of your family, too. We’ll make sure our matching outfits are pressed for
the family holiday picture. Say cheeeeeeese!

OUR PROMISE. “I and love and you” products are formulated by holistic veterinarians to be
uncompromising in quality, ingredients AND efficacy. We create only the highest quality products because we LOVE keeping your pets
healthy, naturally. Our products are formulated to include the optimal combination of complete, whole-food nutrition, freshness, AND premium ingredients to create products that YOU and your pets will love.

We always:

  • Select Wild-Caught, Grass-Fed, Free-Range and Cage-Free meats raised without the use of antibiotics and growth hormones when available
  • Produce our nutritional supplements in FDA registered, human- grade facilities
  • Create our foods and treats in USDA inspected facilities
  • Use minimally processed ingredients to preserve naturally occurring nutrients for whole food sourced nutrition
  • Create our foods and treats with human-quality ingredients, never by-products or rendered meat

We never use:

  • Genetically modified ingredients when crafting our foods and treats whenever it is possible
  • Artificial preservatives
  • Artificial colors or artificial flavorings
  • Additives or fillers
  • Corn, soy, by-products or un-named meats in our foods.”

Dry Food: Nude Food- Red Meat Medley Recipe

I and Love and You’s Description:

“Your dog never fails to appreciate a great meal. Our nude food™ red meat medley kibble is made with whole, deboned meat and real fruits +
vegetables. High protein and grain free, your dog just might ignore the whole elbows-on-the-table rule when you call him over for dinner. We don’t blame him. Just make sure he doesn’t forget “When in doubt, pinky out” at tea time. That would be embarrassing.

pork, lamb meal, herring meal, lentils, garbanzo beans, dried egg product, dried beet pulp, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols and
citric acid), tapioca, bison, sweet potato, pork liver, natural flavor, blueberries, apple, spinach, tomato, carrot, olive oil, new zealand green mussel, choline chloride, potassium chloride, calcium carbonate, chia seed, fish oil, inulin, salt, turmeric, iron amino acid chelate, zinc sulfate, vitamin E supplement, zinc amino acid chelate, ferrous sulfate, niacin supplement, manganese amino acid chelate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, calcium pantothenate, vitamin A supplement, manganous oxide, pyridoxine hydrochloride, copper amino acid chelate, sodium selenite, riboflavin supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium iodate, folic acid, dried Lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, dried Lactobacillus casei fermentation product, dried Bifidobacterium thermophilum fermentation product, dried Enterococcus faecium fermentation product, dried Aspergillus niger, dried Trichoderma reesei, yucca schidigera extract, rosemary extract

crude protein (min) 35%; crude fat (min) 15.0%; crude fiber (max) 4.0%; moisture (max) 10.0%; vitamin E (min) 100 IU/kg; omega 3 fatty acids* (min) 0.45%; omega 6 fatty acids* (min) 2.0%; eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)* (min) .05%; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)* (min) .05%.”

My Description & Thoughts:

This food seems better than most readily available dog foods. The fact that most of the ingredients listed are recognizable whole foods is a great quality. I like some of the goodies listed on this ingredient list. My scrutiny of the ingredient list is that there are not organic ingredients and also some of the ingredients raise a little bit of a red flag for me. I desire whole-food derived sources of vitamins and minerals (as it makes the body more able to assimilate them) and it seems like these are not whole-food derived. Sourced from a trusted location, perhaps, but I always strive for organic, and I am finding that it is hard to find. I commend this brand’s efforts to take steps in the right direction as far as food quality for dogs. But, I see quite a bit of room for improvement. A positive is that Kona didn’t have loose stool or an upset tummy after transitioning her to this food.

Canned Food: Cluckin’ Good Stew

I and Love and You’s Description:

“Children’s books cannot seem to agree on the noises that dogs make. Sometimes it’s “bow wow.” Other times it’s “woof” or “arf” or “ruff.” But really, the only thing your dog will say after eating our grain free, protein-packed canned food is “Oh my dang. This is flippin’ phenomenal.

INGREDIENTS: Chicken, chicken broth, vegetable broth, dried egg whites, peas, natural flavor, carageenan, chicken liver, carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes, guar gum, salt, calcium carbonate, spinach, sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, cranberries, pumpkin, flaxseed oil, choline chloride, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, riboflavin supplement, sodium selenite, calcium Iodate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin A supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, potassium iodide, biotin, vitamin D3 supplement

Crude Protein (min) 8.0%; Crude Fat (min) 4.0%; Crude Fiber (max) 1.0%; Moisture (max) 82.0%.”

My Description & Thoughts:

I like to add a spoonful of this canned food to her dry food to mix it up for her. She seems to like having the wet and dry food together, as the canned food gives off a bit more of an aroma than the dry food. Decent ingredient list, but again, I look forward to the day this brand integrates organic ingredients into their products, because I believe there are caring pet owners creating these products and are striving to work towards a great product that may evolve a bit over time.

Canned Food: Beef Booyah Stew

I and Love and You’s Description:

“Children’s books cannot seem to agree on the noises that dogs make. Sometimes it’s “bow wow.” Other times it’s “woof” or “arf” or “ruff.” But really, the only thing your dog will say after eating our grain free, protein-packed canned food is “Oh my dang. This is flipping’ phenomenal.

Beef, beef broth, vegetable broth, dried egg whites, peas, natural flavor, carageenan, beef liver, carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes, guar gum, salt, calcium carbonate, spinach, sodium tripolyphosphate, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, cranberries, pumpkin, flaxseed oil, choline chloride, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, riboflavin supplement, sodium selenite, calcium Iodate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin A supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, potassium  iodide, biotin, vitamin D3 supplement

Crude Protein (min) 9.0%; Crude Fat (min) 4.0%; Crude Fiber (max) 1.0%; Moisture (max) 82.0%.”

My Description & Thoughts:

Same overall thoughts on this product compared to the “Cluckin’ Good Stew.” Ingredients need improvement, though Kona seemed to enjoy eating it.

Super Power Powder Daily Dog Multivitamin

I and Love and You’s Description:

“For that superhero dog of yours… If you take a multivitamin with that kale and flaxseed smoothie you pound every morning, you might want to start giving one to your favorite dog, too. An easy to use powder with a complete mineral and multivitamin blend, super power powder has what it takes to keep your dog feeling his best. He may never be faster than a speeding bullet or more powerful than a locomotive, but he might give that pesky backyard squirrel a run for his money. “I and love and you” Super Power Powder is a nutritional supplement containing digestive enzymes to help break down the nutrients in your dog’s food, with a generous portion of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to support healthy joints, skin, and coat. Super Power Powder helps to make up for what may be missing from your dog’s food, including nutrients lost in the manufacturing process, or nutrient potency that declines after food is opened. This is the ideal complement to your dog’s daily diet. Use with each feeding for optimum benefits.

INGREDIENTS: Active Ingredients per 2 teaspoons: Glucosamine (as Glucosamine Sulfate Potassium) 150mg, Chondroitin Sulfate 75mg, Green Lipped Mussel (whole) 225mg, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) 200mg, L-Lysine 100mg, EPA/DHA Omega 3 Fatty Acids 100mg, Vitamin C (as Calcium Ascorbate) 50mg, Calcium (as Tricalcium Phosphate) 50mg, Potassium (as Potassium Citrate) 40.68mg, Choline (as Choline Bitartrate)
40mg, Lactobacillus acidophilus 25mg, Saccharomyces boulardii 25mg, DL-Methionine 10.06mg, Chlorophyll 10mg, Hesperidin Complex 7.54mg, Pantothenic Acid (as D-Calcium, Pantothenate) 7.03mg, L-Threonine 5.51mg, Lemon Bioflavonoids 5.02mg, Thiamin (as Thiamin Mononitrate) 5mg, Niacin 5mg, Para-Aminobenzoic Acid 3.27mg, Riboflavin 2.5mg, Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine, Hydrochloride) 2.5mg, Coenzyme Q10 1mg, Silicon (as Silicon Dioxide) 1mg, Zinc (as Zinc Amino Acid Chelate) 0.5mg, Inositol 0.3mg, Biotin 0.05mg, Selenium (as Sodium Selenite) 0.05mg, Iron (as Ferrous Fumarate) 0.05mg, Cobalt (as Cobalt Carbonate) 0.02mg, Chromium (as Chromium Amino Acid Chelate) 0.01mg, Vitamin B12 (as Cyanocobalamin) 0.005mg, Copper (as Copper Gluconate) 0.005mg, Folic Acid 0.003mg, Vitamin A (as Vitamin A Acetate) 200IU, Vitamin

My Description & Thoughts:

I loved the idea of giving Kona a multivitamin. This product was also reasonably priced (on sale for about $15 at Natural Grocers). It is always a good sign to me when a company readily displays and discusses their ingredients on their labeling and website. Although I am not versed on some of the majority of these ingredients, I believe the ingredient list is complex because this multivitamin is wide reaching in regards to the vitamins and minerals it contains. However, I do find myself again wanting to see that these ingredients are whole-food derived and more easily digested Kona’s digestive sysyem.

In conclusion, to touch on my overarching feeling about these products…I believe this brand is doing a good thing here by being somewhat ingredient conscious and eliminating many preservatives commonly found in dog food. That said, I am a writer of a blog that preaches organic, therefore, I must mention that I would be more satisfied if these ingredients were undeniably organic, always. Lindsay at I and Love and You has been the epitome of generous, helpful, and easy to work and communicate with. I applaud their stellar customer service and their quirky and fun website and labeling. I look forward to seeing this company evolve and improve.

Goodebox Organic Sample Box Review

One of the things I have enjoyed most about trying new organic beauty products is having a subscription to a company like Goodebox.

Goodebox, in their words, is

“a members only service providing expertly curated, trial sized healthy, eco-sensitive & effective beauty and personal care products, along with occasional samples of natural & organic health and wellness products.”

The element of surprise is neat to me–as I never know exactly what I am recieving each month.

In the subscription questionnaire, Goodebox got information from me about my skin type, products I typically use and prefer, and which specs are important to me (i.e. vegan, not animal tested, organic, etc.) all of which help them determine which samples go into my box.

In this post I’ll share my thoughts on my favorite products in February and March.

The theme of February’s Goodebox was “Love is in the Air” in reference to Valentines’s Day. March’s box is centered around the change of seasons, spring cleansing and detoxification.

From February’s box:

-Vapour Beauty Trick Stick Highlighter:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“For a well loved, lit-from-within glow, use to add subtle light to cheekbones, brow bones, bow of the lip and inner corner of the eyes. Soft, fool proof shades for all ages and skin tones. Easy application imparts a luxurious, youthful glow that brightens and defines the face. Made with 70% Certified Organic ingredients and 30% natural pigments and vitamins (Contains beeswax).”

-My Description & Thoughts:

This is definitely an item that I am not used to incorporating into my makeup routine. I was pleasantly surprised with how this highlighter looks on top of my loose powder. I applied it to the same places on the face that one would normally wear bronzer (where the sun naturally hits the face-similar to what Goodebox suggests above). Instead of giving the skin a sun kissed look like bronzer does, this trick stick gave my face a subtle light glow.

-Erbaviva Relax Spray:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Relaxation is essential to pleasure. Use this refreshing, therapeutic mist to spray on hair or clothing. Also delightful sprayed into a room or onto bedding for a relaxation effect while infusing a fresh, natural smell. Not for use on the face (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

This spray is my organic “Febreze.” The best thing about this product is the clean ingredient list, whereas your common air fresheners available in the grocery store are chock full of harmful chemicals. I spray this around the apartment before vacuuming and it leaves a flowery, relaxing scent in the air.

-John Masters Organics Blood Orange and Vanilla Bodywash:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Created with the mildest botanically-based surfactants from corn and coconut, the all-over body wash foams into a creamy, rich, sulfate-free lather that gently removes dirt and oil – leaving skin soft and smooth. Follow with our blood orange and vanilla body milk for a beautiful, sensual combination of clean and soft skin.”

-My Description & Thoughts:

I cannot say enough good things about this body wash! This is the most invigorating, intoxicating, incredibly yummy smelling body wash I have ever used. I looked forward to showering just so I could use this product. I can’t wait to order a full size bottle of this body wash. I am also enthused that I learned about the John Masters Organics brand via Goodebox. This brand also makes a Blood Orange & Vanilla Body Milk that I am excited to try in addition to the body wash.

-Metropolis Soap Company Lavender Whipped Shea Butter:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Thick and luxurious, this whipped shea has only 4 ingredients. Shea butter, coconut oil, corn starch and lavender absolute. Use it for serious moisturizing and super soft, touchable skin. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

I enjoyed using this sample size body butter. I appreciate the simple, pure list of ingredients and strive to find more organic products with this quality. The lavender scent was relaxing and soothing, yet a slight bit too flowery-smelling for my preference.

-Persephenie Neroli Infusion Organic Body Oil:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Antioxidant and oleic acid rich, hand pressed Marula oil, coconut and organic sunflower oil, infused with orange flower Neroli will replenish your entire body. Massage into your (or someone else’s) skin for a sensual sensory experience. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

This sample was in a small vial, but even with the small amount I tried, I could tell I loved the scent and feel of this body oil. I could tell when I applied this oil to my skin that the ingredients are high quality and extremely nourishing. I find body oils get absorbed and work best when applied right after a warm shower. The skin absorbs it just enough so that the skin is left nourished but not greasy.

From March’s Box:

-Astara Skin Care Daily Refining Scrub:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Gentle enough to use every day, this organic aloe-based exfoliant combines diatomaceous earth with soothing, nutrient-rich plant extracts for profound cleansing, buffing, and removing of dead cells to improve overall skin health absorption of nutrients. Refines fine lines when used consistently. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

I am a fan of exfoliating in general, so this product peaked my interest. I tend to use a loofa or exfoliating gloves in the shower, but they are not needed when using this scrub. This scrub does not suds up nor lather very well, which I would prefer to be the case. I imagine this scrub would work best for me used on my feet, where I am looking for more exfoliation than sudsing.

-Moom Organic Hair Removal Kit:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“A revolutionary sugaring product that provides the benefits of long term depilation with less pain and discomfort than waxing or other hair removal methods. Exclusive formula and precision adhesion gently removes hair from the root without damaging skin, leaving you hair-free for up to 8 weeks. Regrowth is sparser and finer. For stubborn hair and sensitive areas alike. Can be used anywhere on the face and body. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

With such excellent organic shaving creams, I don’t often choose to wax simply because it is less convenient. This small, travel sized kit is great for waxing your legs or bikini line at the beginning of the summer. It is always nice to learn about organic alternatives to common drug store products. Hair removal is a great category to see organic products surfacing.

-Morrocco Method Zen Detox Hair and Scalp Therapy:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“A unique formula enhanced with special clays to support growth by detoxing the hair follicles, roots, oil glands and scalp. Dynamically assists in reversing chemical damage caused by synthetic hair products and treatments by removing contaminants from the scalp for healthier hair. Muti-tasks as a facial mask and even helps stinky toes and itchy feet. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

I have heard great things about the ability of clays to detox the body in various ways. I was intrigued to try this product. I used this mask about 3 times in the shower and it became a thick paste when mixed with water. Its effect was refreshing and soothing on my scalp. It was a bit tough to move through hair, as you might imagine–it was very thick and paste-like. Seems like a unique and effective product. If I would have had more product to work with, I would have tried it on my face and feet as suggested.

-Yogi Detox & Skin Detox Tea:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Help your body rid itself of everyday impurities. Time-honored purifying herbs Burdock & Organic Dandelion support the liver, Juniper Berry supports kidney function and Ginger, Black Pepper and Long Pepper, a traditional Ayurvedic blend, supports blood flow for gentle cleansing support. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

I am a big coffee drinker and have recently been trying teas a lot more because my fiancé tends to prefer tea over coffee. Both of these teas were pleasant with flavors that were not too intense. I enjoyed the green tea over the dandelion, as I could have guessed prior to trying either of them. I tend to lean more towards a peppermint or fruity flavor in tea, so in the future I picture myself branching out to different tea flavors that Yogi makes.

-Weleda Pomegranate Firming Eye Cream:

-Goodebox’s Description:

“Antioxidant-rich, fragrance free formula featuring organic pomegranate seed oil protects the delicate eye area and helps repair cell damage. Organic macadamia nut oil, organic sunflower petal & ruscus root extracts provide anti-inflammatory benefits and Vitamin A to reduce puffiness, firm and smooth skin around the eyes. Tests show a 23% wrinkle reduction after 28 days of use. (Vegan)”

-My Description & Thoughts:

At age 25, I’m not familiar with products that are firming, wrinkle reducing, or anti aging in nature. I was interested, though, in the moisturizing abilities of this eye cream. I’ve applied this cream several nights before bed for some added moisture to the delicate skin around my eyes. I like how light it feels, how good the ingredient list looks, and how moisturing it is. I was happy to try a Weleda product for the first time.

My Thoughts:

I’m a huge proponent of getting the daily nutrients your body requires through real food, rather than supplements. For some individuals, though, I believe that supplements may be helpful for those looking to bridge the nutritional gaps in their diet.

Fish oil, rich in omega 3 fatty acids, is a great source of beneficial fats that have a wide range of benefits for your health. Fats are largely responsible for facilitating activity in your endocrine system (hormones). Thus, getting your daily amount of good fats is vital for optimum health.

This fish oil by Nutrigold appears to be high quality–distilled, purified and sourced from sustainable, deep water fish. It is also free of many common allergens such as soy and gluten, as well as artificial ingredients–which I appreciate.

Being new to taking it, I haven’t seen drastic positive changes, but I do not have any negative effects like fishy burps nor indigestion. In the past taking fish oil, I’ve noticed that my skin seems to like it and it gives my complexion a boost of glowiness.
