The Best Exercise to Reshape Legs

by Jesica Salyer, Demand Media Google

Lunge It Down

Lunges are very effective at targeting your thighs, especially your hamstrings. Start by taking a large step forward with your right leg, then dip your butt down. Your right leg should form a 90-degree angle. Drive your weight down through your heel to push your body back to a standing position. Repeat this move using your left leg. Form is important to make this move effective. Focus on keeping your torso upright as you lunge. Also, do not let your knee surpass your toe, as this would welcome knee injury. Aim to do three sets of 16 repetitions.

Squat Jump it Up

Squats are one of the single-most effective exercises to target your quadriceps. Transforming the squat move into a jump supercharges the effectiveness of this move in reshaping your legs by also incorporating your calf muscles. Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and drop your butt down so that your knees are over your toes. Drive your weight downward through your heels to propel your body upward, becoming airborne for a moment. You should feel a burn in the front of your thighs after three sets of 10 repetitions.

Kettlebell Deadlift

Deadlifts are a move that can be done with either a dumbbell, barbell or kettlebell. This move helps reshape your hamstrings and glutes. Start by standing upright with your legs shoulder-width apart, holding your weight in front of you. With your back arched and shoulders back, bend at the waist. Bring the weight down to the ground, then pull your torso upright again. You can also start this move by raising up on your toes to incorporate your calf muscles. After three sets of 15 repetitions, your hamstrings and glutes should feel tight.

Laying Leg Curl

You can isolate and reshape your entire backside by practicing this move. Your hamstrings and glutes should feel tight after performing this move. Start by laying down on your stomach with your legs extended and your arms out to either side of you for balance. In a controlled movement, lift your toes off the ground, bringing them closer to your butt. Then, tighten your butt in order to lift your thighs off the ground. Lift them up as high as you can then slowly relax them and bring your toes back to the ground. Do three sets of 15 repetitions.

Cardio for Legs

In addition to implementing resistance training into your efforts to reshape your legs, engage in cardiovascular activity. According to “Fitness” magazine, “One of the best ways to maximize fat loss and get more out of your aerobic training is to vary both the duration and intensity of your cardio workouts.” You can accomplish this by varying the types of cardio you do. The treadmill, stair stepper and elliptical trainer are three effective pieces of indoor cardio equipment. Mix it up by taking a few walking or running workouts outdoors. Aim to incorporate three cardio workouts per week into your routine.

My Description & Thoughts on the Cleanser & Cream:

I am such an advocate for hemp seeds and oil, so to discover The Wonder Seed was a neat thing because this is a brand that highlights and utilizes organic hemp seed oil in all of their products.

This is an oil that is expansive in its healing properties and makes these products very dense and rich.

This cleanser is certainly that way–I’d say this cleanser cleaness gently and has a more hydrating effect on skin than clarifying. Though the cleanser has a lot of organic ingredients, the job that it does in clearing the dirty feeling off of my skin is not exactly what I like. I wish it felt a bit more thorough in how it cleans.

I’d recommend this cleanser to someone who has skin much different than mine. Perhaps, skin that has redness, itchiness, craves moisture and soothing would benefit most from this cleanser.

Because the cleanser provides a very mild and gentle clean, I find the facial cream to be a bit much when using it in combination with the cleanser. For my oily skin, my ideal cleanser is very clarifying and thorough and my ideal moisturizer helps replenish a bit of the moisture back to skin that is taking while cleansing. I like being able to control the moisture on my skin by how I apply the moisturizer–and don’t like when the cleanser provides a ton of moisture.

I think a lot of individuals will find this cleanser and cream duo to be perfect for their skin. However, I would not recommend it for active individuals who struggle with excess facial oil and perspiration.

The Wonder Seed’s Description:

“Our color-safe hemp seed oil conditioner works for all hair types to nourish your scalp and increase moisture and shine while making your hair smooth, more manageable and providing nutrients for a healthy bounce and your best hair days ever!  The sweet orange scent is fresh and exhilarating.  It balances your scalp’s natural oil profile and seals in moisture.  No matter what type of hair you have, this nutritious conditioner will please.  The hemp seed oil is truly super food for your scalp and will even help clear up issues like dry, itchy or flakey scalp, Eczema, Psoriasis etc.  And the formula is gentle and clean enough for infants; Mothering Magazine wrote up our hair care in their “Strokes of Genius” column in 2009.

Ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Virgin Organic Hemp Seed Oil, Orange Essential Oil, Organic Jasmine Blossom Extract,Organic Aloe Vera, Ginseng Extract, Camphor Essential Oil, Mandarin White Oil, LYCD (Live Yeast Cell Derivative), Nettle Extract,Coconut Oil, Burdock Extract, Palm Kernel Glyceride, Soy Protein, Apple Cider Vinegar, Hyaluronic Acid (Natural Plant Based),Soluble Natural Plant Collagen, Cetyl Alcohol (Coconut Oil Based), Decanoic Acid, Lauryl Glucoside (Lauryl Oil Based), Green Papaya Concentrate, Lemongrass Extract, Potassium Stearate (Natural Plant Based),Geranium Extract, Carnauba Wax, Cetyl Esters, Sorbitan Stearate (Strawberry Based), Isostearyl Palmitate (Palm Oil Based), Horseradish Extract, Behenic Acid, Nutmeg Oil Extract, Sea Salt.”

My Description & Thoughts on the Shampoo & Conditioner:

My feelings regarding these two products are very reminiscent of my feelings on the cleanser and cream. In a shampoo, I prefer a thorough clean and in a shampoo I like controlling the moisture that is in my hair by controlling how much product I use.

Like I shared in the aforementioned bit on the face products, I have oily skin, which of course includes my scalp. I exercise and sweat frequently which surely contributes to this already oily situations. Because of this, I look forward to showers in which I can get all the “gunk” off of my body. So, mild shampoos don’t do the trick for me.

Similar to the richness of the face cream, this conditioner is very rich and is capable of bringing the driest hair back to life.  My hair doesn’t need all of that moisture, though. To give you a better idea: when I used the shampoo and followed up with the conditioner, my hair didn’t feel clean afterwards, it felt oily and like it needed another shampoo job. That said, these products are good, just not for my hair and skin type. I love and appreciate the use of organic ingredients in them and wish they were a better fit for me.

If you or someone you know has dry skin and/or dry hair, this product will likely be just what you’ve been looking for.

My Description & Thoughts:

In regards to effectiveness, this shampoo is fantastic. I prefer a shampoo that gives a very thorough clean because my scalp tends to get oily amidst frequent workouts. This product is ideal for me and I’d imagine it would please most active individuals who have similar issues with an oily scalp.

Like with the body wash, I wish this ingredient list boasted more recognizable and organic ingredients. It is an improvement from the typical chemical ridden, drug-store bought shampoo, for sure.

I feel similarly to the body wash and shampoo in regards to ingredients–would love to see more organic ingredients here.

I would recommend these product to someone looking to take a step up from their current shampoo that doesn’t contain any natural ingredients. Though this line isn’t tops, it contains some nourishing ingredients that are a step in the right direction in establishing a routine with organic products.

The Honest Kitchen Dog Food Review

The Honest Kitchen Dog Food

Overall Rating: 4 Stars5 Stars

In our house, filling our kitchen with organic food & products is something that we make a priority. This is also the case for how we feed our black labrador, Kona. Just like us humans, she will not reach her potential health-wise if she does not eat good food. We enjoy and feel good about feeding her well, and it shows! She is an energetic and beautiful almost 8-month old puppy.

560065_10102872165374449_1025387878_n

The Honest Company is one of the few brands of dog food that I have felt confident in feeding Kona. They appear to truly use great ingredients in their products. The Honest Kitchen provides this information regarding ingredients on their website:

“We taste every single ingredient that goes into our foods to make sure it’s just right

We’re proud of every ingredient we source for our natural pet food. We choose many ingredients from as close to home as possible, to help reduce our carbon paw print. We also choose ingredients from their native lands around the world and select vendors based on the quality of their ingredients, not cost.

All our dog and cat foods are 100% human-grade and are held to exactly the same quality standards as the food you feed to your human family.

  • We never buy GMO or genetically engineered produce.
  • Several of our ingredients are certified organic and we’re working to add more organic ingredients whenever we can.
  • We require certification to verify that every lot of raw ingredients we buy has been tested clear of salmonella, E-coli, listeria, lead, arsenic, mercury, melamine, yeast and mold & pesticide residues, before it’s even allowed inside our plant.”

Here are the products we tried with her:

My Description & Thoughts:

Kona did not seem to differentiate in between the Embark, Thrive and Love dog food blends, as she gobbled up all of them. As dog owners, my husband and I can feel good about this because of the great ingredients.

All 3 of these blends come in powder form, as it is dehydrated form. To serve it to Kona, I sprinkle a half serving onto the dry food I feed her along with a few tablespoons (approximately) of water, which helps make The Honest Kitchen food more digestible for her. The Honest Kitchen provides more description of how they recommend you feed their food to your dog, as well.

I would rate these dog foods 4.5 stars–I admire their usage of some certified organic ingredients and their guarantee to never buy GMO ingredients. They are striving to include more and more organic ingredients and when that day comes, I won’t hesitate to give this food a flat-out 5 star rating. In comparison to other common store-bought dog foods, this product line is light years ahead–there is merely no comparison. I recommend this very much to pet owners who are looking for one of the best natural dog food lines available, as this is one of a few brands that is worth the money.

Just the Goods Organic Skincare Review

Just the Goods Skin Care

Overall Rating: 4 Stars/5 Stars (4.5 Stars)

About Just The Goods:

“Just the Goods seeks to offer affordable vegan products to help them become more widely available, therefore facilitating healthier living as part of increased consciousness about kind living, environment protection, and consumerism in general.

Just the Goods does not test any of its products on animals, nor does it commission such testing, because I believe it both unnecessary and unproven to make cosmetics safer for human consumers. Instead of testing Just the Goods on animals, I test all products on myself, and I am joined in this process by many great friends eager to try out my recipes. I am very concerned with how my products rank at http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com, so the spectrum of ingredients I use have known safety records. The Compact for Safe Cosmetics has acknowledged my choices by granting Just the Goods Champion Status. Beyond that, be assured that I would never include in a product something I wouldn’t consider putting on my own body, or giving to people I care about =-).”

Vegan Face Wash for Acne Prone Skin

Just the Good’s Description:

“Just the Goods’ face wash for acne prone skin begins with a gentle organic castille soap base plus kaolin clay to help absorb impurities. Tea tree, eucalyptus, and lavender essential oils provide a deep, antibacterial clean.

This product is available with our without exfoliating jojoba beads.

This product is handcrafted without the use of artificial preservatives. Please store in a cool, dark place for maximum longevity.

Ingredients:

Distilled water, saponified organic sunflower oil + organic coconut oil, vegetable glycerine, salt, citric acid, kaolin clay, tea tree oil, eucalyptus and lavender essential oil,  jojoba beads (where applicable)
Note:

Not recommended for highly sensitive skin.”

My Description & Thoughts:

This cleanser worked great on my acne prone skin. You can feel this wash thoroughly cleansing and purifying skin. The consistency is a bit watery and suds up as you lather it into the skin. The use of the tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender have a calming and clarifying affect on skin. The only improvement would be if these essential oils were organic–along with the other organic ingredients.

Overall, I am very impressed with this face wash. It’s not easy to come across a product with good ingredients that targets blemishes without drying out skin.

I would recommend this face wash to anyone, regardless of gender, who struggles with acne. It will help clear your skin and will act as a catalyst in helping blemishes go away.

facial-moisturizer-acne-prone-smaller-400x380

Vegan Facial Moisturizer for Acne Prone Skin

Just the Good’s Description:

“A quick look at the ingredients in conventional moisturizing lotion can be disconcerting. Petroleum is problematic enough without a whole bunch of other chemicals such as parabens and carbomers, not to mention artificial fragrances and colours, added to the mix. Yet, those elements constitute the basis of most widely available products and we simply can’t understand why.

It seems the sky is the limit when it comes to selecting oils for use in cosmetics, so our goal when creating a moisturizing lotion was to balance healthier choices and affordability. This is what we came up with:

Ingredient highlights:

Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, D and E, as well as potassium, proteins, beta-carotene and numerous essential unsaturated fatty acids. It also contains a high quantity of sterolins, which is reported to help reduce age spots, help heal sun damage and scars. Avocado oil is furthermore said to increase the amount of collagen in the skin, which facilitates regeneration, particularly in the case of skin that is dehydrated or otherwise affected by difficult climates (i.e. Winnipeg’s dry winters). Some claim that avocado oil can even help to relieve the dryness and itching of psoriasis and eczema.

Apricot kernel oil has a high content of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acid. It is considered gentle enough to be used in products for babies, and is thus also suitable for mature and sensitive skin. It is well absorbed without leaving a greasy feeling, and can be helpful in calming the discomfort associated with conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

Aloe vera gel is a powerful moisturizer that simultaneously helps to remove dead skin. It also stimulates the synthesis of collagen and elastin and is known to have a healing effect on burns and other wounds, all of which translates into assisting regeneration.

Tea tree oil helps fight bacteria and keep pores clear.

Distilled water gives this lotion a smooth, fluid texture while ensuring a non-greasy finish, vegetable based emulsifying wax holds everything together, and vegetable glycerine provides staying power.

Complete Ingredient List:

distilled water, persea gratissima (avocado) oil, prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil, exthxylated sorbitan ester (vegetable based emulsifying wax), aloe barbadensis (aloe) leaf gel, vegetable glycerine, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, tocopherol (vitamin e).”

My Description & Thoughts:

I followed up the wash with this moisturizer and found that it restores the moisture balance on skin nicely. Some might think acne sufferers should shy away from moisturizer, however, this is not founded. I find that the opposite is true–skin needs to have an adequate amount of moisture to heal itself. The only fragrance noticeable is from the essential oils, thus, it smells fresh and herbaceous.

Anyone who tries the wash should get a bottle of this as well, as they work well together to tackle problem areas on skin.

Vegan Acne Spot Treatment

Just the Good’s Description:

“After months of testing and many positive reviews, Just the Goods is pleased to finally launch a simple yet effective vegan acne spot treatment.

Combining the clean healing benefits of aloe vera with the antibacterial properties of astringent essential oils, this gel treats blemishes without overdrying skin in the way products filled with petroleum and alcohol are known to do.

To use, add a small dab/thin layer to affected area on freshly washed skin. Allow the gel to dry sightly before applying make-up, if desired. The gel may be re-applied as necessary.

Feel free to combine this product with Just the Good’s other facial care products for oily/combination and/or acne-prone skin, including face wash, toner, and moisturizer.

This product is handcrafted without the use of artificial preservatives. Please store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for maximum longevity.

Ingredients:

aloe barbadensis (aloe) leaf gel, lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil, pelargonium graveolens (geranium bourbon) essential oil, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil, cymbopogon schoenanthus (lemongrass) essential oil.”

My Description & Thoughts:

This stuff is great!! I am happy that I’ve had this on hand through times of the month when my skin breaks out. Like with the wash, my only scrutiny of this spot treatment is that the essential oils are not organic. However, they are naturally derived, which is a good thing. In regards to effectiveness, I can see a noticeable different in my blemishes after applying this treatment a few times–my skin reduces in redness, puffiness, and irritation.

I recommend applying it a few times a day to problem spots, as well as right before going to sleep for optimum effectiveness. This is a product that is great to have in your beauty cabinet for skin “emergencies.”

Vegan Lip Scrub

Just the Good’s Description:

“Beat the effects of dry weather with this gentle lip scrub available in a range of delicious flavours including: cinnamon, peppermint or orange essential oil, vanilla absolute, or unflavoured.

To use, place a small amount on your finger tip and rub gently onto your lips in a circular motion. Rinse off or, if you can’t help yourself, licking is okay, too 😉 Follow with lip balm if desired.

This preservative-free product lasts longer when exposure to the elements (i.e. air, humidity, sunlight) is kept to a minimum. Please store in a cool, dark place and keep tightly sealed between uses.

Ingredients:

sucrose (brown sugar), deodorized simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, vegetable glycerine + essential oil / absolutes where applicable.”

My Description & Thoughts:

This lip scrub tastes good enough to eat. I have not consumed it, but when applied to my lips, I want to lick it off! The brown sugar provides a fantastic grittiness for exfoliation but also makes this concoction amazingly tasty and sweet. Add in the vanilla and this lip scrub is seriously phenomenal stuff.

I recommend this to anyone and everyone–who doesn’t want to make their lips softer, healthier and scrumptious? As a gift, I see this product being perfect as well. I keep my jar in the shower and apply and rinse, making clean up simple.
