I discovered Tusol Wellness through following Ingrid for a while on Instagram. I went down a bit of a rabbit whole discovering other inspiring people in the wellness community (like Joshua Holland). Amidst discovering them, I found myself absorbing so much positive, informative, helpful, inspiring, applicable information. All of this newfound into has been fueling my vigor for overall wellness. Shortly after, I discovered Ilana’s page and was just inspired by how both of them walk the walk.

It doesn’t take long after hopping onto the Tusol Wellness Website to notice the quality of the superfoods&antioxidants in Tusol’s Smoothie blends. For me, ingredients are paramount. I know that they are the key to detoxing and staying vital in regards to hormone function, energy levels, etc.

How I Use Tusol Smoothie Packets

I don’t necessarily have a favorite blend of the 5, because they are serve different purposes. Different time of the day, different vibes, different blend. For example, I really like the Balance (Matcha + Ashwagandha) blend in the morning for a boost. Then other times, when I’m looking to restore, recenter, recover, I look to a blend like Calm (Turmeric + Ginger).

The Tusol Feeling

Perhaps the coolest part of using Tusol’s superfood blends is that I can noticeably feel a difference in my mood, energy levels, athletic performance and sleep. I also can tell that the overall quality of how my days feels good. There are no side effects for me or anything less than awesome health perks.

Also, an active practicer of Crossfit + yoga, I love the plant based protein in these blends that can help me recover. This good, clean fuel really is a secret weapon for recovery in so many ways.

I’m not chasing weight loss, so I can’t speak to that goal. But, I do know that the more nutrient dense superfoods in your diet, the more proficient your body will be at detoxifying. Since heavy metals and toxins store themselves in fat tissue, this is helpful to understand if you are wanting to lose some excess adipose tissue (fat).detox

The Taste

Tusol does a great job of formulating their ingredients in a way that the superfood flavor (some of them are more intense than others; after all these are no-joke, deeply nourishing foods) does not overpower the whole experience.

You can definitely taste the superfoods in each one (for example, the turmeric in the Calm blend, the wheatgrass in the Balance blend), but especially when prepared as a smoothie (as they are intended), they are really, really good. On top of that, you feel great about all the goodness that you’re ingesting.

A Few Words on Detoxing

I will say that if your current diet isn’t healthy (full with fruits, veggies and whole foods), you may have more detoxing to do than you expect. I have quite a bit of experience with detox, as I was an organic + cold pressed juice shop manager for a few years. You may feel the need to go to the bathroom more, etc. BUT, it’s important to note that this is a healthy process and it is your body eliminating what it needs to. You are giving your body the tools to cleanse and purify with superfoods and now it is doing so. Just something to keep in mind!

What Are The Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting?

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting (also commonly referred to as time restricted eating) is a method of eating in which you only eat within an 8-hour window. The most common window is eating in between 11am-7pm and fasting from 7pm-11am.

What are the Benefits of Intermittent Fasting?

  • Increased hormone function
  • Decreased inflammation in the body which contributes to chronic health conditions
  • More thorough recovery from rigorous activity (ex: Crossfit, marathon training, etc.)
  • Can reduce insulin levels + blood pressure
  • Helps brain function
  • Benefits neurons on a way that protects memory + learning
  • Reduction in visceral body fat
  • Increase in lean body mass alongside consistent exercise

Second to thermoregulation (if you were to jump into an ice-cold ocean and your body is fighting to maintain warmth), digestion is the most taxing bodily process that it participates in. And think–we do this on a daily basis, several times a day. It’s no wonder why our energy lags and we feel less than 100%.

How Do You Start Intermittent Fasting?

This can look different for everyone, depending on your chosen window of fasting,  what your schedule is like, etc.

A good entry point to fasting is to wait until 11am to eat your first meal. Making sure you are hydrating upon waking (lots of water) will help your body facilitate detox and feel full.

I like to describe fasting as a spectrum. On one end, you have the most extreme, exact way of IF fasting in which you don’t have any fluids besides water until 11am, and then eat like clockwork starting at 11am and ending precisely at 7pm.

Modification:

On the other end of the intermittent fasting spectrum, you have the approach that I’ve found works well for me: drinking a morning coffee (i add a few tablespoons of Laird Superfood powder), water and some elixirs in the morning.

I’m not doing a by-the-book fast here, but it’s somewhere on the spectrum. It allows me to be giving my digestive tract a break from digesting meals while also allowing me to have a little fuel in me for morning workouts (some days I do 5am Crossfit workouts at our gym).

Is Intermittent Fasting a Fad, or is it Here to Stay?

From my understanding, knowledge accruing and anecdotal lectures from a few professional athletes I follow, fasting is a practice of our ancestors. At that time, it was just how daily life was, as they didn’t have a pantry a few feet away for frequent snacking. They often hunted + foraged for their meals and they only ate after they sought out and located that food.

So, they were forced by the limited availability of food to eat this way. Turns out, there are a a lot of positive health implications to giving your digestion a break during a chunk of the day.

I can see how and why this would be viewed as a fad, but I see it as an ancient practice that is surfacing again, as we look back to our ancestors for some insight on wellness.

Is There Anybody That Should Not Fast?

Totally! Remember that the way you eat is your decision; and it’s one that should be made based on what feels best to you. They are not focused on producing health-boosting coffee drinks that will positively impact your wellness.

It’s just all about knowing your ingredients and how they impact your health. The coolest part is that when you make this drink at home, you have control over what’s going into it!

Our Experience:

My boyfriend and I live together and we are both pretty big eaters! We do so much cooking at home, both because we enjoy it and it’s more cost effective than going out to eat all the time. Luke coaches Crossfit and ran track in college, so with my food/athletic experience and his knowledge, we are both decently educated in nutrition and do a pretty good job of making it happen for ourselves as far as home-cooked meals go.

But even then, there are times we lack creativity and find ourselves cravings some new dishes and new ideas. I’ve never been signed up for anything similar to Platejoy; we’ve always just been winging it in the kitchen and putting all the healthy foods we like together in a yummy way. I wasn’t sure at first that it would be of use for us since we are health nuts most of the time.

I was so encouraged and surprised to see how many great ideas I have been getting from Platejoy. I really love that you can search for recipes by ingredient based on what we have at home. While I’m not big on abiding by and sticking to exact measurements/recipes, I like getting new concepts for dishes or ways to change up meals I’ve made a bunch of times.

My Thoughts:

Through the process of trying out both of these matcha powders, I’ve learned a few things about matcha! (my new green love)

The first thing I wondered was: what’s the difference between Ceremonial Grade & Culinary Grade? 

Short Answer, in my words: It seems as though the Ceremonial Grade matcha is the highest quality with a more subtle, enjoyable flavor. The Culinary Grade matcha packs a more pungent flavor and comes from the mature leaves of the plant.

Now for the BIGGEST dilemma that I had in regards to drinking matcha: hot or cold?

I’m a bonafide raw superfoods fanatic. I believe that merely all plant-based foods retain their nutrient content most effectively when kept away from heat. That said, you’ll see all kinds of information online about foods/drinks containing certain compounds that are only releases when they’re heated. I don’t have an overly scientific or study-based mindset–so I’m not equipped to sit and combat all of those claims. I do, however, operate from a place of “what works for me + what makes the most sense to me.”

I have been witness to the fact that consuming raw superfoods every day (turmeric, cacao, ginger, spirulina, wheatgrass, etc.) has impacted my healthy in BIG ways. And by big ways, I mean they are the solution to problems I’ve had for years (mainly acne + terribly painful menstrual cramps). So, I’ve been on board with raw superfoods in a major way since seeing what they’ve done for me.

That said, I’m not dismissing the fact that consuming matcha tea prepared the traditional way (hot water added to the matcha then wisked until dissolved) is obsolete. It’s similar to there being an abundance of cold-brew coffee brands now, after folks have realized that this method of brewing presents many health benefits over coffee being brewed the traditional way (cold brew coffee has a lower acid content).

Now onto this awesome matcha powder:

It’s organic. You know I dig that–goes without saying. If I’m going to drink something this dense and pungent, it’s extra important that the matcha tea leaves have been grown away from harmful pesticides or herbicides. I love this brand’s commitment to organic and selling a health-serving product.
