What Are The Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting?

Hey feel more gooders! This post will touch on various aspects of Intermittent Fasting. Not sure what that is, keep reading! What are the benefits of intermittently fasting?

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting (also commonly referred to as time restricted eating) is a method of eating in which you only eat within an 8-hour window. The most common window is eating in between 11am-7pm and fasting from 7pm-11am.

What are the Benefits of Intermittent Fasting?

  • Increased hormone function
  • Decreased inflammation in the body which contributes to chronic health conditions
  • More thorough recovery from rigorous activity (ex: Crossfit, marathon training, etc.)
  • Can reduce insulin levels + blood pressure
  • Helps brain function
  • Benefits neurons on a way that protects memory + learning
  • Reduction in visceral body fat
  • Increase in lean body mass alongside consistent exercise

Source: An Intro to Fasting

Second to thermoregulation (if you were to jump into an ice-cold ocean and your body is fighting to maintain warmth), digestion is the most taxing bodily process that it participates in. And think–we do this on a daily basis, several times a day. It’s no wonder why our energy lags and we feel less than 100%.

How Do You Start Intermittent Fasting?

This can look different for everyone, depending on your chosen window of fasting,  what your schedule is like, etc.

A good entry point to fasting is to wait until 11am to eat your first meal. Making sure you are hydrating upon waking (lots of water) will help your body facilitate detox and feel full.

I like to describe fasting as a spectrum. On one end, you have the most extreme, exact way of IF fasting in which you don’t have any fluids besides water until 11am, and then eat like clockwork starting at 11am and ending precisely at 7pm.

Modification:

On the other end of the intermittent fasting spectrum, you have the approach that I’ve found works well for me: drinking a morning coffee (i add a few tablespoons of Laird Superfood powder), water and some elixirs in the morning.

I’m not doing a by-the-book fast here, but it’s somewhere on the spectrum. It allows me to be giving my digestive tract a break from digesting meals while also allowing me to have a little fuel in me for morning workouts (some days I do 5am Crossfit workouts at our gym).

Is Intermittent Fasting a Fad, or is it Here to Stay?

From my understanding, knowledge accruing and anecdotal lectures from a few professional athletes I follow, fasting is a practice of our ancestors. At that time, it was just how daily life was, as they didn’t have a pantry a few feet away for frequent snacking. They often hunted + foraged for their meals and they only ate after they sought out and located that food.

So, they were forced by the limited availability of food to eat this way. Turns out, there are a a lot of positive health implications to giving your digestion a break during a chunk of the day.

I can see how and why this would be viewed as a fad, but I see it as an ancient practice that is surfacing again, as we look back to our ancestors for some insight on wellness.

Is There Anybody That Should Not Fast?

Totally! Remember that the way you eat is your decision; and it’s one that should be made based on what feels best to you. If you adhere to the parameters of your MD, naturopath or functional medicine practitioner, you should discuss this with them, consider their feedback and make the best decision for your unique genetics, goals,

Our Experience:

My boyfriend and I live together and we are both pretty big eaters! We do so much cooking at home, both because we enjoy it and it’s more cost effective than going out to eat all the time. Luke coaches Crossfit and ran track in college, so with my food/athletic experience and his knowledge, we are both decently educated in nutrition and do a pretty good job of making it happen for ourselves as far as home-cooked meals go.

But even then, there are times we lack creativity and find ourselves cravings some new dishes and new ideas. I’ve never been signed up for anything similar to Platejoy; we’ve always just been winging it in the kitchen and putting all the healthy foods we like together in a yummy way. I wasn’t sure at first that it would be of use for us since we are health nuts most of the time.

I was so encouraged and surprised to see how many great ideas I have been getting from Platejoy. I really love that you can search for recipes by ingredient based on what we have at home. While I’m not big on abiding by and sticking to exact measurements/recipes, I like getting new concepts for dishes or ways to change up meals I’ve made a bunch of times.

Probably the biggest advantage I see of having Platejoy is that you can acquire a “menu” to use that completely adheres to your style of eating, whether it’s vegan, low-carb, no eggs, etc. This a game changer actually. We strive to eat gluten and dairy free (Luke eats eggs, I limit them) with a focus on healthy fats, veggies and some fruit. It was super easy to  “tell” my Platejoy sign up page that that’s the way we eat. Then voila! It was like ready to go, customized-feeling batch of meals and ideas for us to take and run with. You can even enter your weight loss goals (if you have any) and get a shopping list to take to the grocery store. So many thoughtful + cool little perks.

We typically don’t have an issue with food waste, but it’s awesome that Platejoy can help you eliminate that by telling you how much food to buy based on how many of you are in your household. Also the handiness and accessibility provided through the app is awesome for taking your phone into the kitchen/planning/etc.

Two of the meals I’ve made so far are pictured above! I made the Mango + Greens Smoothie alongside the Breakfast hash (I added in sweet potato and pork sausage instead of the apple and bacon in the recipe. They are both so satisfying and DELISH!

Nature’s Blueprint Organic Matcha

Overall Rating: 5-stars

About this Matcha:

“A wealth of the antioxidants you need! Let’s face it, we all need a diet high in antioxidants to maintain optimal health, so find them here in our matcha. Scientists have found that Matcha Green Tea contains over 100X more EGCg than any other tea on the market.

Customers routinely report a massive boost of energy without feeling the late day crash of coffee. This Matcha contains a healthy form of caffeine, theophylline, not to be mistaken for the caffeine present in regular coffee. The slow release of this energy helps with the functionality of adrenal glands, and maintains optimum hormonal levels.

Marvel as the weight just sheds off! Matcha has been shown to increase metabolism, and help the body burn fat about four times faster than average. Unlike many diet aides currently on the market, customers have never reported any negative side-effects.

How amazing is the feeling after you’ve detoxed?! The Chlorophyll present is an excellent detoxifier which helps in cleansing the blood. It assists in maintaining the alkalinity of blood and tissues, and flushes toxins for the colon wall.

Our Organic Japanese Matcha is grown by well-established tea farms located in prestigious regions of Japan, who are celebrating over 200 years of carefully mastered and traditional techniques and are highly regarded with an esteemed reputation. Made from the tender young leaves of the plant, this Matcha is of superior quality.

-Vibrant Green Luminosity
-Light Powdery Consistency
-Mellow Fragrance
-Smooth, Clean Taste.”

Leave the barista at the coffee shop and make lushes Green tea Lattes at home, or add to your favorite daily smoothie for an extra kick. Try experimenting with making mouthwatering matcha pancakes for breakfast, and fruit & yogurt bowls. Also, tastes fantastic when incorporated into dips, soups and confectionary treats.”

These powerhouses are packed with substantial doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. My Thoughts:

Through the process of trying out both of these matcha powders, I’ve learned a few things about matcha! (my new green love)

The first thing I wondered was: what’s the difference between Ceremonial Grade & Culinary Grade?

Short Answer, in my words: It seems as though the Ceremonial Grade matcha is the highest quality with a more subtle, enjoyable flavor. The Culinary Grade matcha packs a more pungent flavor and comes from the mature leaves of the plant.

Now for the BIGGEST dilemma that I had in regards to drinking matcha: hot or cold?

I’m a bonafide raw superfoods fanatic. I believe that merely all plant-based foods retain their nutrient content most effectively when kept away from heat. That said, you’ll see all kinds of information online about foods/drinks containing certain compounds that are only releases when they’re heated. I don’t have an overly scientific or study-based mindset–so I’m not equipped to sit and combat all of those claims. I do, however, operate from a place of “what works for me + what makes the most sense to me.”

I have been witness to the fact that consuming raw superfoods every day (turmeric, cacao, ginger, spirulina, wheatgrass, etc.) has impacted my healthy in BIG ways. And by big ways, I mean they are the solution to problems I’ve had for years (mainly acne + terribly painful menstrual cramps). So, I’ve been on board with raw superfoods in a major way since seeing what they’ve done for me.

That said, I’m not dismissing the fact that consuming matcha tea prepared the traditional way (hot water added to the matcha then wisked until dissolved) is obsolete. It’s similar to there being an abundance of cold-brew coffee brands now, after folks have realized that this method of brewing presents many health benefits over coffee being brewed the traditional way (cold brew coffee has a lower acid content).

Now onto this awesome matcha powder:

It’s organic. You know I dig that–goes without saying. If I’m going to drink something this dense and pungent, it’s extra important that the matcha tea leaves have been grown away from harmful pesticides or herbicides. I love this brand’s commitment to organic and selling a health-serving product.

The benefits are bountiful and I’ve seen them first hand:

-Pure, sustained energy boost

-Eliminates bloating

-Helps detox and purify your body (thus, your complexion!)

-Keeps you feeling light and lean

-Increases athletic performance

(these are not their claims, they are frankly + honestly from my own experience)

Val from Nature’s Blueprint has been a dream to work with and is so passionate about what she does (it takes about 30 seconds on her website to witness this!) I’ll also say this–I am not a matcha PRO yet (whereas I am pretty confident discussing coffee!). So, if you have any in-depth questions about matcha, I’m confident that Val would be happy to share with her knowledge + experience so that you become just as gung-ho about matcha as I am!

the teensy summation version:

I have noticed what I like to call a clear, pure, clean energy boost from drinking this matcha. I also have found that it has helped keep my skin clear and glowy. It’s helped me detox; which also helps you lose weight + stay lean the natural way–no garbage, just the power of plants–pretty freaking awesome!)

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics Review

This is a review of Garden of Life’s Dr. Formulated Probiotics.

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you’ve likely noticed that I sing the praises of this brand as much as I breathe. Okay, okay……not that much. But, I am a believer in what this brand does. I use their products daily and have been a lucky beneficiary of the health benefits they provide.

I was lucky enough to tour & hang out in their headquarters earlier this year in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and was blown away by the people, the passionate minds behind these products, and their commitment to quality.

Garden of Life teamed up with renowned Dr. David Perlmutter to create this line of products health that hone in on the mothership of all absorption: your digestive system. These probiotic supplements are unparalleled in the world of probies. They even ship them cold so that they retain their longevity.

Blah, blah, blah, right? Maybe some of you just want to hear the answer to: “Why do I need to take these and what are they going to do for my body?”

The short answer:

Probiotics will help you become healthier, get leaner, have clearer skin, sustain more energy and absorb more of the good food you’re eating. Better absorption means more health. I’ve lived it.

The longer answer: (I’ll offer this up because it left a lasting impression on me (something I learned from one of many lectures at the Garden of Life headquarters):

“Probiotics” is not JUST a buzz word. Your body NEEDS them to function optimally.

-The standard American diet, pharmaceutical drugs, etc. have diminished our bodies’ good bacteria population in the gut. The effect on human health is profound.

-Supplementing the diet with probiotics is key is returning this good bacteria population back to a point where the digestive system can assimilate, absorb and process nutrients as it’s supposed to.

-“At Garden of Life, we are greens, we are probiotics. It’s who are are.” -Sherri Gunn, Garden of Life.

-“So much more can be done with health & prevention.” -Dawn Jarvis, Garden of Life.

-There are trillions of microbial organisms in your body. You help the good microbes thrive by eating a rich, whole food based diet that limits processed foods.

-A natural, whole food diet without pesticides, GMOs helps heal the gut.

-Good bacteria in the gut helps protect against the bad bacteria. So, we need the good bacteria.

-Digestive health is responsible for absorption of all of the food we eat, which contributes to our overall vitality. That’s why gut health is such a focus.

If you made it this far reading this post, I am here giving you a virtual hug. Thank you. I know it’s a lot.

But, I say all of this to say: probiotics can REALLY help you in myriad of ways. I am a huge proponent of them. I use them and I feel a difference when I do.

Thanks for supporting ROO! Here’s to our health–cheers!
