ROO Nutrition Whey Protein Review

This post is a review + my experience with ROO Nutrition Whey Protein.

If you guys follow me on instagram, you’ve already seen how much time I spend doing Crossfit and tearing apart my muscles on the daily (gimme. that. protein!).

In addition to that, I’ve recently been learning about the importance of rotating what you’re eating (basically not eating the same thing all the time) to avoid developing food sensitivities. An example of this would be consuming almond everything, everyday (almond milk, almond butter, almond flour), it’s likely that you will then find you become sensitive to almond after a while.

This can be the case for proteins and other foods you eat a lot of. Every body is different, but for me, I’m trying this approach and I’m liking it right now.

On rotating proteins…

Like we just got into, too much of anything isn’t going to be super awesome for you (and may encourage certain food intolerances, meanwhile), so i’m trying a rotation with protein powders to dodge this.

I was STOKED to hear from ROO Nutrition. (we have the same name!!!! sorta). I’ve been adding their whey protein powder into my daily post-workout (sometimes intra workout) shake. It’s super clean + organic: very cool. The texture if fluffy and light. When you shake + combine it with a plant based milk in a blender bottle, it makes such a delicous + filling + smooth + desserty.
I haven’t done whey in while, but after 10 weeks of food elimination, I found that my dairy sensitivity went away along with the heavy metals that I detoxed out of my system (heavy metal toxicity and food sensitivities are often linked). Though whey is free of lactose, i just chose to stay away since it is a derivative of dairy.

That said, I’ve known many professional athletes, namely Laird Hamilton + Gabrielle Reece taut whey as one of the most bioavailable protein powder sources.

That has certainly been my experience with ROO’s protein so far.

I’ve been drinking plant based protein for so long that i forgot how good whey tastes. The other days, I’m rotating the following proteins into the mix: sacha inchi, pea, brown rice, hemp, casein and beef bone broth protein. When it’s whey day in my protein rotation I get excited! It’s so delicious.

Check out what they’re doing lately and hit them with that follow on social:

My Thoughts:

The role of protein in my daily food intake has become increasingly significant as my attention to resistance training has progressed. These workouts demand the best of me–which results in days where I feel slightly broken down and exhausted, in need of a replenishing + rebuilding dose of protein.

I was immediately impressed with Naked Nutrition’s Naked Whey because the ingredient list is only three-deep. All you’ll find in there is whey protein concentrate + coconut sugar and raw cacao powder. That’s a refreshing change of pace from most store-bought, generic whey protein powders. They’re normally chock full of hard-to-pronounce ingredients and preservatives to extend the shelf life.

Naked’s ingredient lists make it evident that they are striving for quality and health-boosting ingredients–not primarily profit. They care about what goes into their products and that is awesomesauce. Their commitment to grass-fed is something I applaud. Seeking grass-fed weigh is important because it means that the cows producing the milk from which the whey is derived have been fed the diet they were intended to eat–not one to artificially enhance or increase their milk supply. This means there are no added hormones getting into your system through the whey you’re taking in.

I can speak from experience when I say that consuming cold processed (versus whey protein that has been heat processed–& the majority of them are) whey protein HAS made a difference for me in regards to how this protein sits in my stomach. It feels like my body can absorb and assimilate the protein and amino acids from this whey protein more easily and with more comfort than other proteins that have been exposed to heat. I REALLY like that they choose to cold process.

To be perfectly frank, I would reach for a vegan protein before a whey protein if it was up to me. I’ve found that my body feels its best when I am consuming a lot of plants. I love that Naked provides both options–both whey and vegan proteins: both with superior ingredient lists. THAT SAID, I understand high quality whey protein like this one to be highly bioavailable (easily absorbed by your body), so I like to add it into my protein rotation sometimes.

I found that I enjoyed the whey protein best when I used the recommended TWO scoops of protein, as it made it yummier, creamier and more satisfying than just one scoop. Double UPPPP Uh uh! I couldn’t conclusively decipher whether or not the brown rice vegan protein is raw (that’s the only thing keeping me from giving these proteins a booming 5-star rating).

I like what Naked is doing (totally rad name, too! We were born naked!) and I encourage you to go check them out! You can find them here:

Only Protein: Individually Wrapped Whey Protein Review

IMG_6088.JPG

Only Protein

Overall Rating: 2 Stars

About Only Protein:

“Only Protein is the product of meeting three people’s needs.

Mike Rino is an avid mountain biker. Having mountain biked for some time, he realized that, after riding a substantial amount of time, he was losing muscle and began looking for a way to protect his hard-earned muscle. He needed a product that was easy to carry and use. Mike had been working in the packaging industry and saw the opportunity to package protein in a stick. This would be the answer to what he had been looking for with his long-distance biking.

Jesse Raddon is an avid hunter and works out daily. He needed a way to pack in a meal that was light and required very little space. As he and Mike came together, this was exactly what he had been looking for to take on his hunting trips. Jesse also trains daily and goes right from the gym to work. He didn’t want to pack a big container of protein powder for his post-workout drink, or put a single scoop of protein powder in a baggy so he could mix up his post- workout drink at the office. He loved the idea of a single-serving protein stick. This would give him the convenience he was looking for without the hassle or mess!!

Michelle had just returned from the Olympia—America’s premier bodybuilding and fitness competition—and was frustrated at the fact that she could not find a protein powder that could feed her muscle quickly, while also providing a sustained release of nutrients—and least, one that didn’t have fillers and artificial sweeteners. Anyone that knows Michelle knows that she is very passionate about health and wellness and trains daily. As she worked with people in the fitness industry and her other clients that were trying to reach their fitness goals, she could not find a product that she felt good about recommending. While in her son’s chiropractic office, she was holding a protein powder her son was using and began to complain about the ingredients. Mike was standing there and asked if she knew anything about protein powders and shared what he was working on.

Only Protein not only meets the needs of these three people, but also will meet the needs of the person on the go, without the hassle of blenders, measuring, or mess. We live in a hustle and bustle world and many do not get the nutrition that they need daily because they don’t have the time to fix something healthy. Whether you are rushing to get to work or are a mom getting children ready for school, there is no need to skip meals anymore. Just rip, pour, and enjoy!

High Quality Ingredients

We only use the highest quality ingredients in our products without the cheap fillers. Only Protein contains no fillers, no hydrogenated oils, and no artificial sweeteners such as asparatame, acesulfame potassium (ace-K), and sucralose. To maximize absorption, we have added 200mg of Protease to ensure proper protein metabolism and 200mg of Lactase for those that are lactose intolerant. Cellulose-free fiber has been added to help you meet your daily fiber needs. ONLY PROTEIN contains branch chain amino acids (BCAA’s), including Isoleucine, Leucine and Valine.

Only Protein Contains No Harmful Ingredients:

Ingredient List from the Vanilla flavor:

My Thoughts:

The convenience of Only Protein is superior to most. Most whey protein is sold in large containers that, while perfect for home use, are hard to lug around during the work day. These little packets have the dream portability that an athlete, coach, businessperson, student, parent, etc. would find handy. I would toss one of these packets (unopened) into my tall blender bottle and commute like that, adding water when I’m ready to drink.

Taste-wise, the vanilla is my favorite. The mocha was a unique surprise (and delicious) and the chocolate is tasty in its own right. I just find that I often prefer vanilla over chocolate–vanilla is also more versatile to me.

In regards to the quality of the protein, this protein has most specs I like to see, aside from the fact that it’s been produced organically (and extra mystery ingredients). It’s a bit hard to tell. “No Chemical Additives” could suggest that it’s produced organically, but it’s unclear. My experience is that brands that do things organically will tell you that they do, as it costs them more money to produce products that way. Thus, they want to “brag” about it (not a bad thing in this case 🙂 ). I appreciate the gigantic list of “bad” ingredients that are not used. I especially like “no genetically modified ingredients,” “no antibiotics”. I’m hoping that this protein also is made without injecting the cows with hormones.

When you look at the actual ingredient list pictured above, I’m not a fan of seeing all the extra ingredients. They’re likely used to improve the texture or shelf life of the product, but I would rather have to refridgerate the product than have it contain those additives. The fact that theres not even an explanation of why these ingredients are in the product is a little alarming. I like transparency. If a brand stands behind their product, I’d like to see them justify all of their ingredients in terms of health. All in all, this whey protein beats some, but isn’t even close to tops.

That said, I have tried many organic whey proteins that are the next step up from this powder, driving me to give this protein a less-than-awesome rating. I do believe the convenience is a neat component of the product–& again, the quality is a bit better than average, but not great (and they need to ditch the dodgey ingredients!)

Bob’s Red Mill Whey & Hemp Protein Review

Bob’s Red Mill

Overall Rating: 3 Stars

About Bob’s Red Mill:

PRESERVING NUTRITION THROUGH TRADITION

At Bob’s Red Mill, we know that you can’t rush quality. That’s why we manufacture our products using time-honored techniques, like grinding whole grains at cool temperatures with a traditional stone mill. This production ‘secret’ allows us to seal in the freshness and bring you wholesome, quality foods, just as nature intended.

Our beautiful stone grinding mills are much like the ones used during early Roman times. And to this day, our quartz millstones remain the best way to produce the finest products available. Unlike high-speed steel rollers, our stone mills ensure the most nutritious parts of the whole grain remain, so we can pack all-natural goodness right into your bag.

MILLING, TESTING, PACKAGING, DISTRIBUTING—ALL UNDER ONE ROOF

We’ve known from the first day we opened our doors in 1978 that to make the best products possible, we’d have to be able to do it all ourselves. And with our state-of-the-art milling, packaging and distribution facility located right in Milwaukie, Oregon, we’re able to guarantee quality, every step of the way.

Bob’s Red Mill takes great pride in handling all aspects of the production process in-house, starting with processing, washing and inspecting the grain, and ending with shipping the finished product to your door.

Each product undergoes extensive quality control tests within our in-house laboratories. During this testing phase, our gluten-free offerings are segregated from our other products, and tested in special gluten-free-only ‘clean room facilities.’

But don’t just take it from us; you can actually see the results of all our hard work. With our special clear packaging, you get to be the final judge of the quality and freshness of our products, before you take them home.

SOURCING THE FINEST PRODUCTS
FROM OUR FARMS TO YOUR TABLE

Our relationship with our product starts at the source, with the farmer who produces the grain. We maintain personal relationships with farmers from across the country and make an effort to visit their farms. Together, we ensure that we’re offering the best product available, while always using best practices.

ENSURING CERTIFIED ORGANIC, WHOLE GRAIN GOODNESS

We often hear the question from our customers, ‘What does organic really mean?’ It is, simply, a label assigned to foods that are produced without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers, and that do not contain genetically modified organisms (more commonly known as GMOs). Organic food production also supports farming methods that are deemed environmentally sound.

We’re proud to offer one of the largest lines of organic, whole grain foods in the country. When you see the ‘USDA Organic’ label on our products, you’ll know that to earn that label, Bob’s Red Mill had to complete a rigorous certification process through the USDA’s National Organic Program.”

Whey Protein

About:

“Whey Protein Concentrate is a high quality, complete protein with all of the essential amino acids. Dissolves instantly. Excellent for protein drinks and baking.”

Hemp Protein

About:

“Hemp seeds are one of nature’s best sources for plant-based protein. Containing all of the essential amino acids the body needs, our hemp protein powder is a perfect boost to your morning. Try adding hemp protein powder to your smoothies, shakes and yogurt, or use hemp protein to replace up to 25% of the flour in a baked good.

My Thoughts:

Organic, powdered proteins are a part of my everyday diet. They are sure and quick way to ingest a dose of protein on-the-go, without compromising the quality of the food I’m eating. I am always open to trying new, organic proteins and was happy to discover that Bob’s Red Mill makes whey & hemp protein. My family has used various Bob’s Red Mill products in recent years, mainly the flaxseed, coconut flour, almond flour and gluten free baking mixes.

Many of Bob’s Red Mill products are certified organic, but I’ve recently learned that these two proteins are not. That was a little discouraging to learn–after usually looking at this brand in a very positive light. These proteins are, however, both non-gmo.

Taste-wise, both proteins taste pretty bland (to be expected). I’ve found that adding liquid vanilla stevia to my protein shake helps add some flavor and sweetness.

When I construct these ratings, I have to consider everything that I’ve tried. In this case, I know of many organic hemp protein brands and many organic whey protein brands. Unfortunately, this leaves these two Bob’s Red Mill products in the dust. If the day were to come that Bob’s held these two products to a higher standard (organic), I would surely be on board with them. Until then, I’ll have to seek other brands for my dally protein.

*These complimentary products have been generously provided to me for the purpose of trying them in order to write a review on my experience.

My Thoughts:

Here’s my overarching thought about these vitamins and this protein: I feel like they will help you become skinnier, but not healthier. Unfortunately, I think many people go for this.

Believe me, I love the idea of superfood concoctions that naturally aid weight loss. However, these products have no organic ingredients and contain bulking & anti-caking agents. Ick–no thank you.

The protein powder tastes good (if that’s of the utmost importance to you) and the vitamins go down easily and don’t leave a bad taste behind.

If these ingredients lists looked cleaner, I’d be all-about these products because they are convenient and the protein powder has a dessert-like taste to it. Unfortunately, I’ve tried many protein powders and discovered many natural metabolism boosters that are completely organic, making these two products fall far behind.
