How Taking a Break from Coffee Can Help You
I can earnestly say I never thought I would take a break from drinking coffee. I would deem myself an absolute coffee connoisseur. I come from a family who drinks it daily, and in many ways it is a favorite past time of mine. I love grinding the beans, how it smells, the sound of it brewing…..all of it.
That said, I am never above tweaking my diet (or at least trying it for a while) if I believe it could improve my health in a significant way. I have had issues with what I call “sleep eating” for several years. As silly as it sounds, I am notorious for waking up in the middle of the night to grab a snack or make a meal in the kitchen. I often do not even remember doing this, until I wake up with peanut butter on the edge of my lip (no joke). I had contemplated several things: Do I not eat enough during the day? Do I have a “disorder”? What can I do to stop this from happening?
I started feeling disappointed in myself because I felt I was taking a few step backwards with these “sleep eating” episodes, after eating so remarkably well during the day. I got to a certain point where I just accepted that maybe it’s just a funny thing about me…until it occurred to me that eliminating coffee was something I hadn’t tried yet.
Cutting out coffee was something that I was not excited about. The tough thing to realize was that I just might need to try this in order to tackle this issue. In my mind, I figured that since caffeine can affect sleep, it could be playing a part in this problem.
So, I bit the bullet and started weaning myself off of coffee. Over a week’s time, I gradually decreased the amount I was drinking, starting at one full cup and drinking a bit less each day until I only had one gulp. As you can imagine, I had a noticeable headache for the next 2 days. I noticed I was a little cranky and lacking my normal motivation. Thankfully, after the full week of weaning, I felt like myself again. I felt like I didn’t need the coffee to get going.

Since ending the weaning process (it’s been almost a week), I haven’t had one incident in which I found myself in the kitchen in the middle of the night. This has been incredibly encouraging to me!
Quitting coffee for the time being has also been dual purposed. In doing this, I hoped to also get an idea if detoxing the caffeine out of my system would help my facial skin to be clearer. I have always struggled with acne and have also drank coffee since I was a teenager. I thought that the acne could perhaps be triggered or worsened by the excessive caffeine.
In summation, here’s what I have experienced thus far with the measures I’ve taken:
1. Quitting coffee to prevent “sleep eating” and encourage my body to sleep soundly throughout the night:
-I found that this, so far, has helped solve my problem completely! Perhaps, sleeping optimally throughout the night has helped my body to truly rest and not go after food.
2. Quitting coffee to help clear up acne and blemishes:
-I have certainly seen a difference in how certain problem areas on my face are less inflamed. They haven’t gone away over night, but my skin appears to be less red and stressed looking. Along with a few herbs that I have learned about recently that target hormonal acne (I will do a post on this soon!), I am finding that eliminating the coffee intake has helped my skin in a slightly noticable way.
