Natural Remedies for Period Pain: End Cramps with Natural Products feel more gooder

Many people ask me how I got introduced to and interested in living a more holistic lifestyle and incorporating more natural products into my life. The truth is that you could say it all started around age 12 when I started my period. From the get-go, I had debilitating menstrual cramps every month, and I also struggled with painful, embarrassing hormonal acne along my cheeks and chin-line.

I guess I was just intuitively inclined to dig deeper into why this was happening to me, and I inherently knew that taking pain relievers was not a real solution. Rather, it was a band-aid to help temporarily take care of the pain that my body was experiencing from shedding my uterine lining.

What Helps Period Pains Naturally?

I have many theories at this point, but at the heart of the overarching idea is that I aim to support my body every month in offloading estrogen, incorporating herbs (and an understanding of Traditional Chinese Medicine), and prioritizing a nutrient-dense, protein-focused way of eating. Focusing on protein does a few things: it keeps my leptin hormone regulated and it also keeps my body composition healthy. Fat is estrogenic, so I try to keep my whole body healthy and in a happy place for this reason.

I simply notice that when I am leaner through a flowy, nutrient-dense, mindful interaction with food and exercise, my periods are more balanced and I experience fewer unpleasant symptoms. Thus, carrying any excess adipose tissues seems to be indicative that I could be supporting my body better. All of this is reason enough for me to keep doing what I’m doing. My focus is feeling good; huge shocker there.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (commonly abbreviated to TCM), is an effective and holistic system of medicine that originated thousands of years ago in China. TCM is rooted in an appreciation and implementation of nature and of the elements. There are several different healing modalities under the TCM umbrella including acupunture, herbalism, tui na (Chinese Medical Massage), cupping, gua sha (scraping), moxibustion, and food therapy.

The brand that makes the tincture I love and implement daily, Elix, falls under the herbalism wing of TCM. They do it beautifully, too. Though food and herbs are commonly overlooked and not taken seriously as a healing method in our western culture, it’s encouraging for me to remember that many other places in the world still value herbs and food therapy just as much as ever.

The History of TCM

These ancient traditions from China have (awesomely) survived and stayed intact into the 21st century. In China, these modalities are accorded with equal status as what we think of in the west as medicine (allopathic). TCM arose from ideas recorded in between 200 BCE and 100 CE in the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, a text based on the observations of nature and a deep understanding that all life is subject to natural laws. It is filled with concepts that are fundamental to TCM now, like yin and yang, the five elements, and the ideology that nature effects health.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is believed that living in harmony with all of these principles is key in regards to being in health and having longevity. According to that original text, the Yellow Emperor’s Classic, members of generations that preceded this time lived for a hundred years, and had health so strong & potent that they were healed by healing words, meditations, spells, and incantations alone.

They text continues to reveal that it was only after human’s Qi and vitality diminished, and went against the joy of life that they became ill and their health declined. Herbal medicine, acupuncture, and other branches & modalities of TCM became necessary only at this point.

The TCM View on Healing

Instead of looking for the causes of illness, Chinese Medicine practioners seek patterns of disharmony within the body, which are how the body expresses an imbalance between yin and yang. Particularly, much attention is traditionally given to the pulse and tongue. Essentially, TCM says that poor health results from a deficiency or excess of yin or yang. For instance, having a common cold, instead of being the result of a virus, is seen as the body’s inability to adapt to external factors such as “wind-heat”, “wind-cold”, or “summer-heat”. A high temperature denotes too much yang and shivering is the result of an excess of yin.

There are many other patterns that are recognized in TCM as well. These patterns (or constitutions) include blood stagnation, Qi stagnation, yin deficiency, yang deficiency, damp heat, and phlegm dampness.

What Herbs Stop Period Pain?

Herbs that my favorite menstrual-tincture brand utilizes are sourced mindfully and with the utmost attention to purity. Because of that, I don’t run out and grab these herbs from anywhere. I trust Elix’s sourcing and extraction methods to be the best way for me to ingest these herbs with confidence.

Some of my favorite herbs that Elix uses is ginger, rehmannia, gardenia, poria, and reishi. Note: each formula is personalized and so, the herbs that you will get in your unique formula will be vary.

How Do You Relieve Period Cramps Fast?

In our society, it’s the norm to want things immediately. Instant gratification, ya know. And too, I do understand that when you are in pain, you want not to be. I fully get that and can relate.

When I’m in the moment and I am seeking immediate relief, I do try to avoid any synthetic-derived pain relievers, and I look to a heating paid and rest. Also, I love to make ginger tea at home.

But, it’s important to understand how herbs work. Unlike pills and drugs that our culture has become accustomed to, herbs work with our bodies and work over time. They typically are not an immediate fix – by nature they are not designed that way. They are meant to help your body naturally reestablish a natural flow without any side effects. For some, I have anecdotally heard that they do experience relief from herbs in a short amount of time (30 minutes or so), but the power and benefits for me have come with time and with consistent, regular use.

How Do You Make Homemade Period Pain Relief?

Way back in the beginning of blogging, I actually came up with a simple recipe for a homemade “icy hot”. You can check that post out here. Essentially, you can use high-quality essential oils like wintergreen, peppermint, and birch, applied topically to help take care of the pain. Typically, you want to dilute the concoction, but you can make it as strong as you desire.
