Welcome to this post: Natural Swaps to Avoid Bad Bedding.
What is the healthiest bedding material?
Why is bedding important? A few reasons: we spend a giant chunk of our lifetime sleeping. The materials we are in contact with (and related contaminants & chemicals we are breathing in) are important and can have implications over time.
Unbeknownst to many, most common bedding brands contain a range of toxins on them. Some of these chemicals make the material repel water, maintain structure/integrity, etc. Even mattresses can be coated with a flame retardant – which is known to be toxic to humans, yet you would be sleeping on it?
Thankfully, nowadays there are several reprutable, honest brands that I’d deem the best organic bedding brands. One thing you’ll notice a few of them have in common is the use of Bamboo (fabric name CleanBamboo or Tencel). Bamboo is excellent as a clean, sustainable fabric option and it’s incredibly luxurious in regards to feel and overall experience.

Reducing Toxin Exposure
If you’re anything like me, it’s a bit trippy to know that by simply buying basic things like mattresses, sheets, bath items, and bedding, you’re also signing up for more chemicals in your environment. No, thanks! That’s not for me. And, it gets me fired up. to support brands that are doing it right and making products with good-for-you materials. If you’re going to be spending the money anyways, it makes sense to make a mindful investment in the better option, especially since we spend such a significant percentage of our lives in bed.
Prepared, Not Scared
With concerns around PFAs and other contaminants, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and thus be in a constant fear state. I don’t ever want to promote that or suggest that we go through life frantically dodging all that could ail us. Rather, I think it feels better to me to simply be aware and add more mindfulness into purchases.
But First, Making Your Body Resilient
I think the single most important part of this is focusing on becoming super robust and resilient in your own body. Taking care of your cells on an energetic, physical, emotional, all-encompassing level. Creating and living out the belief that your body’s ability to be ultra-healthy is ever present. So then, maybe life is simply getting out of it’s way and staying in the flow. That’s at least how my brain navigates this whole conversation around toxins. Being prepared, not scared.
Eco Swaps to Start Living
For me personally, I get a lot of joy out of supporting brands that have the health of their customer in mind, instead of disregarding it. I try to make this entire education and integration process as low-stress as possible. I try to make it flowy and empowering, rather than a frantic ditching of all toxins ever and expending every monetary resource to replace everything. I hope you can feel that there are two different eneries that you can bring into living a more nontoxic lifestyle.

It’s about a gradual upleveling of everything around you, taking an inventory of what’s serving you and what’s not. Supporting the brands that are committed to quality, clean materials/ingredients, and choosing not to vote the other direction with your dollar.
Green Mattress
I realize bedding (especially buying a new mattress) can be a big expense and out of reach at the moment to replace everything top to bottom. The way I approached it was to start with one thing at a time. We have gradually worked our way into a total rockstar bed situation – an organic mattress and multiple sheet sets made from materials like bamboo and linen. We’ve also recently upgraded our towel situation.
Since these are products we use/interact with every single day, having good clean options has really been something I enjoy a whole lot.
